Author Craft / I finally did it.
« on: August 02, 2017, 12:57:00 AM »
Hello everyone.
I finally finished my first novel The Forging: The Odyssey Of Nathan Embers. I put it on Kindle. I tell you it was a bit scary. I had a hard time pushing the publish button. Fear is the mind killer. I will consider my endeavor to be a success if I earn even one dollar. Well, here's hoping. Fingers crossed.

Author Craft / Help with query latter.
« on: July 12, 2016, 12:49:34 PM »
First I want to say thank you for reading this post and for any help you can give me.

My novel is finished and I am now ready to find an agent. The first, and I hope only, agent I want to submit to asks for a query letter, a synopsis of 1-2 pages, and the first 10 pages of my novel. My problem is every example of a query letter I've found looks like a synopsis. Also I have found no formating requirements for the sumission. Is there a standard for an email format i.e. double space, single space? I am confused and don't want to waste their time or mine with my novel if it will be tossed out of hand for not following the proper format.

Any insights would be great appreciated. Thank you.

Author Craft / Could use a little help on two items
« on: November 11, 2015, 02:11:44 PM »
First off thanks for reading this post.

Number one: I am having trouble naming two characters in my novel. I am almost finished and I would like to give them names other than name1 and name2. They are Japanese and are uncle and nephew. They are also craftsmen. Creating names for my characters always seems to be the hardest part of writing.  :-\

Second: Can anyone recomend a good example of a treatment for a novel. I have found many descriptions of what a treatment is, but no examples. I want to be prepared for when I submit my novel to an agent.

Thank you again for reading this post and giving me any advice.

Author Craft / Breaking POV
« on: March 26, 2012, 01:23:06 PM »
I am writing an Urban Fantasy Novel (who isn't) and it is in first person. Now it seems to me I can build more suspense if on occasion I break first person and do a little foreshadowing with other characters (only a few sentences or paragraphs at most). My question is does breaking the POV ruin the work as a whole or will it be too confusing to the reader.

Author Craft / To write linearly or to jump around
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:35:48 PM »
I have been writing my novel linearly but, I have hit a block. I know where I am going and could take up the story at a later point. Is jumping around a coruptiom of the process or is whatever floats your boat ok? Any thoughts? :)

Author Craft / Using short stories as a writing tool
« on: March 03, 2010, 01:53:30 PM »
I have recently found myself using a short story format to expand my understanding of some of my support characters. Is this a common practice? I have never taken a creative writing course, so I am not familar with the more common tools of the trade. Also, do any of you get so emotionally moved by what you are trying to write that fear of not conveying it well enough stops you from writing at all? I am trying to take that big step of actually writing a story arc I have played in my mind for about ten years now, but I find fear is staying my pen (keyboard).

Author Craft / Chapter Titles yes or no?
« on: May 24, 2009, 06:04:54 PM »
How do feel about chapter titles? I think they can be a great outlet for additional snark. My wife feels they can give away too much of the upcoming plot. What are your feelings?

Author Craft / Copyright laws?
« on: June 03, 2008, 12:38:21 AM »
When you make reference to another literary work, do you need to get permission, pay a fee, or give credit for the work?

I am working on a character that uses lines from movies or novels as a snappy come back to situations or adversaries. I'm not talking long passages cut and pasted, but something no longer than a line or two. Example: Bad guy has our hero dead to rights and says goodbye to our fair sword-wielding knight. He replies "I'll be back" in his worst German accent.

Thank you in advance for any help you could give me. No point in fleshing out this guy if I can't use him.

Author Craft / Tools of the trade?
« on: May 28, 2008, 11:29:12 PM »
Are there any good, and by that I mean cheap and functional, software packages for writers?

How about voice recognition software?

Any other ideas for tools of the trade (other than drugs legal or otherwise) that can be of help for the struggling author.

How do you write off expenses in year one of writing when you won't see any income till years two? What if you can't get the thing published at all? Any comments from you all will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Author Craft / Does JB accept any ideas from his fans?
« on: May 05, 2008, 12:23:28 AM »
Is there a way to get ideas to JB? Of course these ideas would be free for his use and no acknowledgement required. These are just a few things that could be funny to see Harry deal with.
