~blink~ Unobservant as I usually am,Something looks different to me - is this a new version of the board?
-
Yup! We upgraded to the newest SMF software for added protection against spam, plus a few other perks. We'll post the details of what's different later today.
-
Personally, I dislike the new look.
But better protection is good! Just means I'll have to find something else to do when I can't sleep. Rather than hunt down spammers :D
-
Looking good so far!!
...Hopefully it will still look good/actually work on my computer at work...we've still got IE6, but hopefully I'll be one of the lucky few to get IE7 in the next couple of weeks... :o
-
...woah.
I'm not sure I like how it deals with the spoiler bar with the Hide/Show button. I liked seeing how long a potential spoiler was before I looked at it.
-
It's just installed. I'm sure they'll experiment with added SMF Themes that fit better with the site. Eventually they'll get it.
Just think about it as moving into a new home. All the walls are bare and everything you have is packed away in boxes.
-
No no, now the fun thing will be trying to convince people it's always been like this.
New board? Huh? Looks the same to me.
-
The colour scheme is certainly easier on the eyes for me.
Glad most of the furniture stayed in the same place.
Kali, that's evil.
Funny, but evil. :D
-

Not an option, unfortunately. The older way wasn't supported for the new version.
-
Would this mod help, or is that what you're using?
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=195
Edit: Also found another one that's just mouseovers.

First one is the one we're using, I believe.
Second one, I don't like "reveal on hover" in general. Click makes it a deliberate choice, hover can be accidental.
-
No no, now the fun thing will be trying to convince people it's always been like this.
New board? Huh? Looks the same to me.
...and I would have fallen for it, too, because Firefox decided last night it doesn't like my internet connection, so I've had to start using Chrome....I thought it was an odd quirk of the browser!
The new format is certainly very clean looking, and I'm sure I'll be used to it in a few weeks.
(Although...I'm with jeno on the new formatting for spoilers.)
-
...woah.
I'm not sure I like how it deals with the spoiler bar with the Hide/Show button. I liked seeing how long a potential spoiler was before I looked at it.
On the other hand, I have a terminal case of Iwanttoaccidentallyseespoilersitis, so this makes me either make the conscious effort to click on the spoiler button or summon up the willpower to resist. ;D
Much more challenging than before, when I could "accidentally" move my mouse over a spoiler and see what it said. :D
-
I don't like the new look, but the spam was becoming very difficult, so it this helps, I will be glad with it.
-
I liked the previous version of spoiler hide/show, but it's not really a big deal.
I'm not sure how I feel about quotes. I don't like the " symbol in top left corner. Feels kind of redundant.
-
Remember that this is the basic SMF template. More than likely Iago Et. Al. will reskin it before too long.

Don't necessarily bet on it. :)

:'(

YAY! SMF 2.0! I've had it for awhile on my forum. I think it runs more cleanly. Thanks, Iago, et al!

Yeah, spam control was going so horribly on the prior that I felt it was time to go to 2.0. Helped that they very recently released the "final" version.
As to the theme thing, I could be convinced to replace it with an existing, proven, 2.0-compatible theme -- but I don't want to go hunting for it.
(I'd prefer to preserve the dark text, light background thing and avoid any switchovers to dark background, light text stuff. Dark bgs can look cool but are murder on the eyes long term. At least eyes like mine!)
Make suggestions with links to the SMF site's listing of the alternative theme, and I'll consider it. (No guarantees, but it'll save me the hunt.)
-
;D
Edit: So following the "doesn't burn a hole in your face" requirement, how about one of these?
A little rusty: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2446
Simple black with a little greyscale: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2355
Simple black, white and blood red: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2412
Red and white, similar to the front page: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2380
None of these seem quite perfect to me. I still miss the subdued browns.

Or, if someone was so inclined and had way more spare time than they knew what to do with, here's a "how to": http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=349446.0

done
-
are we going through different trial runs of the new look? The thing changed while I was in the middle of reading a thread...
done
well, that answers that.
-
I'm flattered to see a suggested change followed through. I like it, but I'm just one. Other people should compliment your hard work.
-
I liked the old look better. But better spam protection is good :)
-
I like the new color scheme.
(still a bit miffed about the spoiler bar. ;D)
eta: aw, and the emoticons changed, too. sad.
-
I like the old look better because I don't like change. >:( jk Give me a couple of days and I will complain if it's the old way. I actually don't mind this at all and it seems like the font is bigger so it's easier on my tired, sunstrained eyes.
Thanks.
-
Actually, i don't mind the look change at all - I am really happy that the ignore feature is working now. Thanx Fred.
-
I like the new emoticons. Angry guy looks really angry. >:( And check out googly-eyes! :o Plus, look, it's even got a Jim Butcher emoticon: ???
-

The emoticons look the same to me...
-
I like that red color scheme. Way better than that blue/orange thing before. Though I'm probably going to miss the all blue old one...
-
The emoticons look the same to me...
Me too.
Bigger text is good, black and red nice and moody.
I like this change. :)
-
(I'd prefer to preserve the dark text, light background thing and avoid any switchovers to dark background, light text stuff. Dark bgs can look cool but are murder on the eyes long term. At least eyes like mine!)
AMEN to that! PLEASE Keep to the light background, dark text!
-
gah. every time I've visited today, the layout's different! You're trying to make me think I'm crazy, aren't you? :D
-
This looks cleaner. Still no vomiting or dancing emoticons, I see. :o - is this the evil eye? or giving the stink eye?
GOOD JOB ANYWAY!!!!!!!! ;D
-
I find the color scheme a little hard on the eyes. Will there be an option to change that?
-
Don't necessarily bet on it. :)
Sorry to hear it. :-\
The colors are not easy on the eyes. Everything else sounds like improvements.
-
Do we still have a board chat? I wasn't able to find it. The DFRPG people, me being one of them, usually used the chat to communicate and coordinate on the boards.
-
I noticed some of the emoticons changed but some stayed the same. Is there anyway to get back the original version of this one ( ;D ) ?
-
Makes me want to update my board now... I like the new layout and the color scheme is boss.
-
Skin colour aside, I can't find the "new posts in the threads where you posted before". Where it is? I need it a lot!
(I like the red colour better)
Edited: forget it. I found it and now I feel dumb. Sorry!

Hey, took me a good 5 minutes of playing around with the site before I realized the massive change in that link...from the left side of the screen to the right... ;D
-
I stil automatically push my mouse to the left. Gonna take me a while.
-
whoa. Many things happen when i sleep.
it looks nice, tho, but i guess new security means the bot hunting game is gonna end soon - drat, that was my only form of exercise.
I like it. But hey, i'm not really choosy when it comes to skins.
...as long as it doesn't go dark-bg-light-text, am all good. ;D
Its awesome! Great job to iago and people who did the change ;D
-
What happened to the buddy's list. That was incredibly helpfull to me to see who is online? And now it doesn't work ???
And the emoticons still look the same to me :-\
-
I don't mind the change. The colors seem easier on my eyes, and I can see SOME emoticons have changed, some have not. I have only a couple extremely minor issues.
1) My "search" bar covers part of my avatar pic now that it is on the upper right. Could this be a MacOS thing or is there something I need to adjust?
2) We used the chat ALOT. Any word on its return?
-
1) I'm using Windows, and it is the same. I don't care anyway, I saw my picture in any post
-
1) Yep, same here. Using Firefox, if it is a browser issue...
-
2) We used the chat ALOT. Any word on its return?
Chat's gone until the folks who supply it can provide a version that installs cleanly with the most recent version of SMF. I don't have any kind of estimate as to when that'll be as it's beyond my control. :-\
-
The spoiler tag change is probably going to change how we use spoilers on the forums, period. I've already started hoping in the back of my mind that new posts I read won't have spoiler tags in them, because the new version breaks up sentences and paragraphs into new sections of the post, rather than blending into the post fairly seamlessly as the old ones did.
I like the general idea of clickable spoiler tags, because highlighting is too easy to do accidentally, but the new version effectively means that we may as well spoiler tag an entire post if it's going to have spoilers in it, if we want the post to read smoothly.
Otherwise, I kinda like the new format. It seems to be quicker with loading pages, for one thing. Though I'll probably miss the old cyan color scheme for a while.
-
It's going to take some getting used to.
I think I just realized something though.. did we all lose out "Logged in for" timers?
-
Looks like "ignore" went offline.
-
It's going to take some getting used to.
I think I just realized something though.. did we all lose out "Logged in for" timers?
You can find that under "Profile" and then choose "Profile info" then "Show Stats"
You'll get more info than you got before with the main page link.
-
So far I like the new version.
It was a nice surprise once I was able to get in this morning (though I did like the message that came up while the new version was loading!).
A bit of a surprise when I pulled it up this weekend, but I think I like the red better.
-
Nice. Easier to read, and pages are moving faster. I see we have auto correct, as well. That may create some interesting comments.
-
I personally like the new formats for the most part, makes it softer around the edges and cleans up the look. However, I miss the stars, don't like the uber-wide quote box even for one line of text (predominantly in sigs), and the font size in the reply box is about double what it was. But we're (read: iago :P ) working on that. :) Nitpicky things in the larger scheme.
Also, loads MUCH faster in Firefox 5 than the old SMF version did.
-
and the font size in the reply box is about double what it was.
That was one of the things I liked about the new set up.
-
*Smiles proudly as I return from the weekend and see a brand new board. Putting my hands to my chest, fingers lightly touching, then tapping my fingertips to my slightly open lips, gasping softly, eyes tinged with the colors of dewed kissed autumn grass, I breathlessly whisper.*
All for me......I...I really don't know what to say......it's...it's just so......so.........
*a soft gasp slips from between lightly blushed lips as a glistening tear leaves a shimmering trail down my sun-kissed cheek. The next word deeply accentuated as the breath accompanies it from my pursed lips.*
beautiful..... I'm so humbled, I never in my life thought you'd all do something this extraordinary for someone like me....... "The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!" (sally fields speech). Thank you so much...I love you all too!
*Humbly walks away to check out the new board.*
-
Every thread I open is refusing to load fully. I get maybe 3 or 4 messages, and then it just sits there waiting to load. :-(
-
Koroby, the board is loading fine on my comcast account. In fact it's been the best since I've joined.
It might be a problem on your end - so you might want to check that to help Iago out troubleshooting your issue.
-
I use 3.6.18 Firefox, and fixed it by using NoScripts to forbid a site called gstatic.com from working. Everything seems to be working fine now.
-
I use NoScript as well. Good job on troubleshooting the issue!
-
For Fred:
I looked into the poorly placed search box and found the following in the rtl.css file:
#searcharea {
left: 2em;
right: auto;
float: left;
margin:0 0 0 22px;
background:url(../images/theme/search_bg.png) no-repeat;
}
#searcharea .inputbox {
margin: 5px 19px 0 0;
padding: 3px 7px 4px 5px;
float: right;
}
You should be able to move it by changing margin:0 0 0 22px; to something like margin:0 0 0 100px; or so. Hope that helps.
-
Now, to fix the quote mark issue you'll have to go to the index.css file here:
/* A quote, perhaps from another post. */
blockquote.bbc_standard_quote, blockquote.bbc_alternate_quote
{
font-size: x-small;
color: #000;
line-height: 1.4em;
background: url(../images/theme/quote.png) 0.1em 0.1em no-repeat;
border-top: 2px solid #99A;
border-bottom: 2px solid #99A;
padding: 1.1em 1.4em;
margin: 0.1em 0 0.3em 0;
overflow: auto;
}
/* Alterate blockquote stylings */
blockquote.bbc_standard_quote
{
background-color: #d7daec;
}
blockquote.bbc_alternate_quote
{
background-color: #e7eafc;
}
Do get rid of the silly quotation mark you can remove this line: background: url(../images/theme/quote.png) 0.1em 0.1em no-repeat;
Or if you want to leave the background tag in as a reminder of where its at I think you can replace it as such: background: null. (El Diablo has pointed out that background: " " may work better.) I could be mistaken on the syntax.
You can play with the rest of the blockquote with the syntax in the above quote. If you want to make a box I believe the tags are border-left and border-right.
Someone please correct me if I made a mistake. ;D
(Also, Fred just changed the smiles again. HI FRED!)

Does the forum work better in Firefox? I usually use bog standard internet explorer...
-
YIKES! *stares mesmorized at what was just posted on the board by Aakaakaak*
Are you trying to hypnotize us into becoming your zombies, because right now.....I don't understand any of that and the world would blow up if I even tried to. ;D
-
Rofl, as long as you don't divide by zero I think we'll be alright. I'm pretty sure Fred will get it pretty easy. Once you know how to make your own HTML the rest starts coming easier.
-
Whewww the world can be at peace again knowing that. :D I know some html, enough to do a simple website (the old old kind, not the new stuff.....and I've tried!!), nothing comes easy for me..I'm a hands on type person...if my hands not on it, I can't do it ;D
-

Tried that. Box didn't budge. :P Set it back.
-
*really resists the urge to suggest changing margin:0 0 0 22pm; to something like 1 8 7 21pq; in the trtle.rn file just to see what would happen then*
*looks up innocently*
you guys aren't going to hurt me or anything are you?
*blink, blink*
-
Tried that. Box didn't budge. :P Set it back.
Crud. Well I guess it's back to the drawing board.
Did the blockquote thing work?
YES! So I'm batting 500...
-
Okay, I think I have it this time. Back to the index.css file.
#searcharea {
clear: both;
position: absolute;
bottom: 20px;
right: 2em;
padding: 0;
display:block;
float:right;
margin:0 22px 0 0;
width:191px;
height:30px;
background:url(../images/theme/search_bg.png) no-repeat;
}
#searcharea .inputbox {
font: 12px "Lucida Grande","Lucida Sans Unicode",Arial,sans-serif;
width: 140px;
height:13px;
line-height:13px;
margin:5px 0 0 19px;
padding:3px 5px 4px 7px;
float:left;
background: none;
border: none;
color: #ccc;
}
Change float:right; to float:left; and see how far over it moves. You may have to play with the margins in #searcharea .inputbox if the internal text doesn't move. If the float doesn't move it then the #searcharea margins might move it.
-

Float didn't, adding in a margin-right of 100px did. Is that enough?
-
Hey, look at that!
It still covers a tiny part of the bottom left corner but that isn't a big deal.
Thanks!
-
150-200px would be ideal I think. Great job understanding my ramblings.
-
That's great, Iago! Thanks, the "search" is perfect now. :D
-
That's perfect Fred.
Yeah, what Dina said. ;)
-
ditto.
-
you know...if I live another 100 years, I may start to understand some of this......stuff *nods* then they'll change it again.
*sighs and crawls back into my dark hole*
-
Thank's iago. :)
-

*sighs and crawls back into my dark hole*
They already did. That was xHTML and CSS. Now everyone's moving to HTML5 (http://www.onextrapixel.com/2010/11/15/useful-html5-code-snippets-you-can-use-today/).
-
See I knew it!! why oh WHY!!! I swear they hate me!! :D do they have HTML5 for super dummies?
-
Yes, it's called "learn css, xml and html first and just tweak it a little". :o
-
:D thanks, that helps.....ummmm....do you give lessons...the step by step kind? *snickers* I make good real, honest to goodness home made food, really I do!
-
Like most coding there doesn't seem to be anything great for initial education on HTML. There is, however, a basic way to start. Start a premade blog that will let you modify your code directly. Then you just keep playing with it, googling how to do things, and continually breaking it until you get it right. That's pretty much how I started. Getting your hands dirty with it seems to be the best way to learn. Once you have a general grasp of how that goes you'll understand pages like these:
http://www.w3schools.com/
http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/011/firstcss#HTML
http://www.htmldog.com/
-
Thank you, Aakaakaak, you have my undying gratitude.....and my sanity, or what will be left of it. Now...if I don't return from these sites, here's a letter to my family. :)
-
Be sure to leave the dinner you prepared me. ;)
-
*leaves another note on where to find the finished meal* ;D
-
Thanks, Iago! I appreciate all the headaches that must come with running a board like this. Thanks for taking the time to tweak things a bit.
-
Yup! We upgraded to the newest SMF software for added protection against spam, plus a few other perks. We'll post the details of what's different later today.
It's not working very well with Firefox 5.0.1 I'm only getting 2 posts per page and the second one is blacked out so I have to highlight it to read.
-
I believe this can be fixed by using noscript. I could be mistaken, but every page load seems to be calling out to google+. Getting rid of that call might help.
-
Oh jeez, really? I think I know what plug-in must be doing that, and it's not a vital one. I'll see if I can turn it off pronto.
-
The Google chrome suggestion seems to be working. :)
-
IAGO TO THE RESCUE!
-
The Google chrome suggestion seems to be working. :)
Yes, it works perfectly with google chrome :)
-
It's not working very well with Firefox 5.0.1 I'm only getting 2 posts per page and the second one is blacked out so I have to highlight it to read.
Strange, I haven't had that issue at all with the boards since the switchover, and I'm also using FF 5.0.1. In fact, it's the browser that runs it best for me.
-
Well, for some reason it's working fine now.
-
SUPER IAGO to the rescue
*puts a cape with a giant SI on him and runs off again*
-
Psht, you just want to see him in tights. ;)
-
::)
-
:D -nods- And I have a camera ready too
-
In that case,
they must be posted. ;D
-
Hey Fred, the ladies of reddit (not me) suggest you bring them a pic of you in tights (provided your wife approves).
-
And a cloak, don't forget the cloak.
-
Yeah, the cloak is VERY important here, esp with the SI on it! *nods lots*
-
Er... haven't seen if there's a thread on this subject, but...
Is the Chat applet officially webpage non grata around here? The URL still works, but there's no link.
-
Is the Chat applet officially webpage non grata around here? The URL still works, but there's no link.
It does? That's good news, at least. The real problem is that the add-on hasn't been updated for the new code-base, and I can't re-install it properly until it is.
-
It does. When I go to http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/chat/index.php, it loads up just the same as ever.
-
You could provide the link to it as the "news" line at the top of the board until it all gets fixed up.
-
and it works!! Hobbit and I were in there earlier tonight to chat.
-
Weird. When I try to login to the chat, I'm getting a message saying, "You can't access the chat."
-
works for me, though it did throw up some sort of error at the start
-
My only dislike is colors of "No new Posts" and "New Posts" i am little color blind and have sensetivite to light so my screen brightness is very low. At first glance they look similar to me. i have to look carefully to understand that there is a new post at "Announcements" or "Word of Jim" forums..
-
I got the error at the start too, but I ignored it and the chat still worked...I'm more stubborn then it, I guess. :D
