DFRPG / Supernatural spec. ops?
« on: August 25, 2013, 01:22:20 PM »
The idea just popped up in my head. If the right people would wind up in the know. They would be eager to use people with these unique talents in their operations doing whatever spec. ops do. gather intel, deal with threats but of course in this case they'd deal with supernatural threats as well as the regular threats a country faces.

Has anyone done anything like this?

DFRPG / Re: Crossroads Demon Stats?
« on: August 06, 2013, 07:16:08 AM »
If you stat it, the players can kill it. Just a warning.

I think that the things these demons can grant can't be accurately represented by giving them stats. They can grant boons like Hellfire, unique items of power and things like it. There's no stunt/power that represents it.

If the players are going to be intent on crossing swords with these things I think hellfire would be appropriate for them. Though the first thing I'd see these things do is throw up a veil and vanish in to the nevernever while perhaps letting a few more thuggish minions out to cover his retreat and/or tear the PC's a new one.

DFRPG / Glamour like evocation?

I was wondering. Does the creation of glamours inflict stress to the caster like evocation or channeling does?

DFRPG / Some magic from a diffent series
« on: May 25, 2013, 03:20:07 PM »
While waiting for the new Dresden files book I've been reading the Iron Druid series. And it's got some fun stuff in there. Most interesting is the Druidic magic. Which I think could fall easily under a category of sponsored magic.

But there's two items of power that might be interesting to incorporate in to a dresden files game.

There's Morreltach, which is enchanted to kill any foe with even the slightest injury.
And Fraggeras, a sword that can cut through any armor, conjure wind and when held to someone's throat.

Fraggeras would be fairly easy to stat giving access to offensive channeling (air), a high weapon rating and giving you the option to easily interrogate someone when they are taken out. Maybe the weapon as some aspects to reflect it's incredible sharpness.

But Morreltach, I've got no idea how to stat such a deadly weapon. One consequence and you're boned. How would you do this?

Wow, I did not expect such a huge discussion to break out over my question.

I've perused the various reactions and I think it's helped me understand some of the limits that exist.
In the end it boils down to common sense and GM fiat. To put it bluntly.

Thanks for the help.

So, the limit is how much lore the caster can put together? That's not something you can just keep pumping in to the spell at intervals?

7
Yeah that's the death curse. But that is something you shoot off once and quickly.

As I understand thaum you can just spend time, and draw power up to your conviction every time and just slowly build up to a bajillion shifts of power without taking any stress or consequences.
So a thaumaturge who's just finished reading his necronomicon could, given time gather enough power to explode Mab's head for example*.
At least, that's how I understand it. And that's not how I want it to be.

*: Yes I know you'd need an arcane link for that the point isn't specifically Mab but just that even a rank amateur can pull together shitloads of power and complexity while the spell should really be beyond him.

I couldn't find an awnser by searching. So I ask.
When a character is going to use thaumathurgy, assuming time isn't an issue. How much power/complexity could a wizard put in a spell? I figured that there should be a limit but I couldn't really find one in the rules.

Is there a limit to a wizard's ability to do magic?

And a bonus question: Assuming time is a factor, how much time usually passes before you can roll to gather your power?

DFRPG / Re: Crossing in to the Nevernever, how hard is it?
« on: February 27, 2013, 03:00:27 PM »
That's always the case isn't it?
Honestly I'm not sure exactly.
I think it should be hard. Crossing the boundaries between worlds isn't a mean feat in my eyes and should be something that requires considerable skill and power and it shouldn't be something that an amateur can accomplish on a whim.

DFRPG / Crossing in to the Nevernever, how hard is it?
« on: February 27, 2013, 02:37:24 PM »
I'm wondering, aside from the myriad of dangers, the risks of getting lost/eaten or otherwise wind up in some charlie foxtrot, how hard is it just to open a way to the nevernever?

Harry specifically says that it's not something he could do easily. Even in the more recent books the effort seems to tire him out quite a bit. Or it's implied anyway.
So how many shifts of power would be needed to open a way?

Also, is that done with a ritual or with a special kind of evocation?

DFRPG / Re: Making an item LOOK powerful
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:04:59 PM »
Sounds like you'd want to put an illusion on it, of course The Sight is not going to be fooled. But another kind of divination would be an opposed roll.
So put a complexity 5 illusion on it to make it thrum with power and the divined will need to beat that illusion with whatever skill he uses to investigate.

DFRPG / Re: What places in history would you DFRP in?

Cowboys &  Indians & sorcerors sounds pretty awesome to me yeah.

Oh I can imagine something like HBO's Deadwood. But surrounded with native american shamans. Chinese dragon-sorcerors.... Oooh makes me tingly to think of six-guns and hexes.

I got this idea watching the trailer for Omerta and thought, what would it be like if both the gangsters and the cops had wizards on their team? I imagined shootouts with Tommyguns and fireballs.
Monsters being called for a hit on rival gangsters. Smuggling routes through the nevernever...
And I got to thinking, what other times in history would make for some cool wizardry?
