DFRPG / Re: Help Decide My Fate

It depends on the type of things that you are into.  I would suggest something with simple rules and limited types of dice required to play the game.

For somebody just getting started I would suggest the following:
Space 1889 reprinted by Heliograph Press
Any of the original Wolrd of Darkness games, you only need one book to start playing with.
Victoriana, which you should be able to find at drivethrurpg.com
Call of Cthulhu, but only if you are a fan of Lovecraft and are looking for some intense horror rpging.
Serenity, just because I'm a Browncoat.

DFRPG / How do you deal with the Daphne?
« on: March 12, 2007, 06:41:16 AM »
The Daphne:  A character in game that is just like Daphne in Scooby Doo:  Always falling into traps, getting kidnapped, should no better than to do stupid shit but does it anyway, fails the majority of her rolls except for some type of saving throw.

I got a call while I was at work from an old friend that was running a game this afternoon.  His sister was playing an old character of mine, but was a total Daphne and he didn't know how to handle it.  I asked if it was just bad dice rolls or bad roleplaying.  He responded that it was both.  For the dice, I suggested freezing them for ten minutes or just go to the secret stash and loan her some Mojo Dice.  For her playing, I suggested use it for some comic relief.

DFRPG / Re: What was your biggest screw-up as a GM?
« on: March 08, 2007, 07:11:39 AM »
1.  Running a 1st Ed World of Darkness game with 30 regular players, and another 10 rotating ones.  Of that total 40, there were 8 Changlings, 2 Wraiths, 10 Mages, 5 Werewolves, and 15 Vampires (12 of which were Toreadors, and I hate Toreys).  There was also one immortal midget named Jose that the players couldn't kill no matter what they did to him.

2.  Rolling all 10's during a Faith check for my NPC Vampire hunter while the party was in the middle of nowhere.  The result was that the sun came out at 1a.m. and all the PC's burst into flame

And Nemo, von Bek, congratulations. I think I woke my neighbors up choking on my water. Some things you expect on an RPG board; Eddie Izzard and UK jokes are not among them. Top form, y'all!

Thanks, I aim to please.  Be thankful you are not in Pittsburg, KS.
Now, all the animals with long ears on the side of the boat...

I'm assuming you're joking...but if you aren't...then you haven't looked hard enough through the crap to find the gems.

In part, yes I am joking.  I have found a couple of gems, but not many.  Therefore, I haven't been looking.  If somebody asks me to read their work, I will out of courtesy and give an honest critique.  I always try to be constructive and not negative.

My statement about having written crap and knowing it when I see it is kind of an inside joke about movie critic Roger Ebert.  He wrote the script for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, which he admits was pure crap.  As a result, he knows crap when he sees it.

I must also admit that I have a special loathing for Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fanfiction.  My ex-wife spent twelve hours a day reading and writing both.  I was subjected to a lot of very bad fanfic.  When I began looking for good fanfic, I found very little.

For me, most fanfic is pure crap.  I can say that because I used to write crap, and know it when I have the misfortune of coming across it.

That being said, if you are going to write it then follow these rules:
1.  Use secondary characters that never get fully developed
2.  Avoid slash unless you want to die a firy death
3.  Show it off for about a week, then burn it
4.  Afterwards, never write any more fanfic

Not many flags raised for the UK yet...

That's right, your people did try to take over the world through the cunning use of flags.

Is it true the the reason the sun never sets on the British Empire is because God is afraid of what the English will do in the dark?

I'm in the process of making Harry a Guild Associate in Victoriana.  It will be easier to stat him up for Call of Cthulhu.  The challenge is going to be making him a Serenity character, although Bob would make a perfect Companion.

Author Craft / Re: rewrites
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:27:46 AM »
I find that I rewrite as I go.  Being my own worst critic, if something strikes me as being off, I fix it on the fly then when I reach a point that I can stop with the writing for a moment I see if it holds up.  If not, then I get a second opinion and keep writing in the mean time.

I once had a teacher tell us to write in reverse, start with where you want to end up then figure out how to get there.  She didn't keep her job long, but it was interesting advice.

To me, subgenres seem to be little more than a marketing ploy any more.

The podcast was great.  I think that your friend's perspective was dead on.  It would be nice to hear from somebody who was a fan of the books first that could divorce themselves from that to compare the two as individual entities.
