Author Craft / Locked Within - free on Kindle
« on: April 12, 2013, 01:45:02 PM »
My first book, Locked Within, is available for free on Kindle for a limited time. With the sequel, Silent Oath, coming out this year, it's the perfect time to get into the series.

DFRPG / Credit Card Fraud - A Stunt?
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:44:34 AM »
One of my group is creating a Fae Grifter for our game. He wants to be able to get money through illicit means like credit card fraud, hustling pool, or conning people, etc.

Would it be worth coming up with a Stunt to let him use Deceit instead of Resources in certain situations? Or would this just be Resources with a specific flavour?

DFRPG / Advice on a Catch
« on: April 09, 2013, 11:58:03 AM »
My wife's character for our new game is going to be a Native American shapeshifter. She's a member of a specific group that acts as a messenger between the living and the dead, and her alternate form is that of a bird (raven, eagle or owl, most likely).

She'd like to take a Recovery power to compliment her shapeshifting, and we were wondering how much Refresh "bones" would be worth as a Catch? I would think about 3, since you could stop by a butcher or dig up a grave to get them, and the character's people aren't likely to reveal this weakness to a lot of outsiders.

DFRPG / Can the Fae Queens kill?
« on: April 05, 2013, 09:24:29 AM »
There's something I want to clear up before my new campaign starts, not that I'll be throwing my players against Mab and Titania anytime soon, but I just want it settled in my head to I know what's what.

Can Mab or Titania kill a human?

I remember reading somewhere that they couldn't kill any mortal, even their own Knights, and that's one of the reasons they need their Knights to begin with, so they can have people killed when they need. Am I correct?

I haven't yet read Cold Days, and I know it's heavy on the fae, so please don't reveal anything about it. If it reveals new information or outright contradicts something stated in an earlier book, just say so.

DFRPG / Non-Wizard magic-users and technology
« on: April 04, 2013, 11:27:13 AM »
My "On The Run" campaign is kicking off with setting creation tonight. One of the things I'm trying to figure out is frequency and severity of compels for magic messing up technology.

At the Up To Your Waist power level, the most powerful mortal spellcaster option is the Sorcerer. YS gives Victor Sells as an example of a Sorcerer, and it's made clear that Sorcerers are people who have a lot of power, but fall shy of the requirements for membership of the White Council, and miss out on the same level of training that a Wizard receives.

So far it looks like the only mortal magic-user in the group is a Focused Practitioner who crafts enchanted items.

In the books, we see less-powerful magic-users than Harry having relatively little trouble with technology. Victor Sells didn't appear to have any major issues with it, and Mortimer Lindquist lived in a regular house, owned a television, and appeared on tv shows regularly. So would it be fair to say that Sorcerers and Focused Practitioners just don't get compels to their High Concept to cause problems with modern technology?

DFRPG / Magic Map (my players keep out...)
« on: April 03, 2013, 02:36:59 PM »
I've already mentioned my idea for my On The Run campaign, in which the PCs will be fleeing the Wardens and trying to clear their names.

I'm coming up with ideas for additional core elements of the campaign's plot and in particular, trying to give them a goal beyond simply staying a step ahead of the White Council.

In addition to trying to clear their names, the group is going to have the chance to get their hands on a map of America, only the map is enchanted. At the moment I'm thinking of it highlighting possible trouble spots or areas of magical power, essentially a narrative excuse to draw them to the next town. If that's all it is, then I don't think it needs any mechanics behind it, but I was wondering if I should do anything more with it? Should it have locations of hidden demonic prisons? Gateways into the Never Never? Should I factor in mechanics or a skill roll for its use?

DFRPG / Failure in games
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:39:39 PM »
This seemed to be something of a crux issue in another thread, so I thought I'd see what people generally thought about their characters failing in games.

Now, by failure I don't mean the whole group being wiped out or anything that might result in the campaign having to end. Anything that stops the campaign stops the story, and that's no fun.

I mean minor and major setbacks. A beloved NPC being killed. Maybe even a PC dying. Or just losing a conflict, or an enemy escaping.

Personally, I love moments like these, because they're an opportunity for interesting roleplaying and storyline that might not have otherwise happened. They also raise the stakes and make eventual victory not only more urgent, but also more satisfying. I find I get very bored very quickly if the players just succeed constantly, overcoming any threat as soon as it appears, resorting to immediate conflict and removing an opponent from play before they've even had a chance to play a part in the story.

This goes for whether I'm a player or a GM. I love the rise and fall of characters, seeing them at their lowest before their comeback and final victory.

One of the reasons I love FATE, and DFRPG, so much is that the system not only compensates failure by awarding Fate Points when the players lose a conflict or accept a compel, but the fact the players can use these moments of failure and weakness to build up their strength before the final act means the system encourages varying levels of success throughout the game. For me, that's essential to a good story.

What do others think?

DFRPG / Campaign idea - "On The Run"
« on: March 19, 2013, 05:19:02 PM »
I'm planning to start a new DFRPG campaign. I was running some other games for the last couple of years, but with my second novel due out this year, writing my third, and taking care of my two beautiful baby girls, I just have to go back to a system that I can prepare for quickly and improvise with easily. So it's back to DFRPG, which I really have missed.

I've had two campaign ideas and I left it for my players to decide which we run with. It looks like they've gone for an option I titled "On The Run."

The idea is simple. The PCs are being pursued across America by the Wardens for violations of the Laws of Magic (whether rightfully or wrongfully accused). They stick together for protection, stopping to look for ways to clear their name and, importantly, help those people who no-one else will help.

I have a few ideas for how it's going to go. I'm thinking Up To Your Waist for the power level, to allow a variety of decent abilities but keep them weak enough that simply standing their ground against fully-trained Wardens won't be an option. I also like that this will allow them to use modern technology to give them an edge in evading their pursuers, since the most powerful of them would at most be a Sorceror. I'm not allowing anyone to play a Knight of the Fae.

Most importantly, they won't have any major factions to call on for help. They're out on their own, fighting the good fight and trying to stay alive.

I've decided that at least one player has to have their First Book be about the events that led to the group being hunted. The two co-star characters are likewise specifically being hunted, while the other three (we have a six-player group) can just be friends who agree to stick with them and help, if they want.

Aside from this, I have a lot of work on my hands. We can't really do a normal city-creation session, and while the rulebook does mention "non-city" games, it doesn't really provide much advice for a game where the group's journey might not be predetermined before play starts.

I was thinking maybe that instead of creating specific locations, my players could come up with generic elements that crop up from time to time, like how in Supernatural, the Winchester brothers always wind up going over a case in a local bar, or stay in crappy motels.

Does anyone have any other ideas or advice for how to do a travelling campaign in DFRPG like this?

Author Craft / Silent Oath - Sequel to my first novel
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:55:19 PM »
With the title finalised, I am thrilled to be able to say that Silent Oath, the sequel to my debut novel Locked Within, will be released later this year.

In Silent Oath, Nathan Shepherd continues his fight against the Council of Chains, joined by old friends and new allies. When an enemy from his past emerges at the center of his latest investigation, Nathan must decide whether to trust a woman who may be tied to his previous incarnations.

Author Craft / Locked Within - My First Novel
« on: August 24, 2012, 11:59:03 AM »
I've been gone from these forums for far too long. I used to spend most of my time hanging around the RPG boards, but today I'm back with news about the release of my first novel, available from November 6th! It'll be available in print and ebook from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and regular brick & mortar booksellers.

The supernatural realm and the mundane world have existed side by side since the dawn of time. Predators walk the streets, hidden by our own ignorance. Once, the city of New York was protected, but that was another time.

Now a creature emerges from the city’s past to kill again, with no-one to hear the screams of its victims. The lost and the weak, crushed under the heels of the city’s supernatural masters, have given up hope.

But one man finds himself drawn to these deaths. Plagued by dreams of past lives, his obsession may cost him friends, loved ones, even his life. To stop this monster, he must unlock the strength he once had. He must remember the warrior he was, to become the hero he was born to be.

His name is Nathan Shepherd, and he remembers.

DFRPG / On The Fly
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:56:52 AM »
Last night I had to run something in place of our current Deadlands: Hell on Earth game because I'd forgotten some players wouldn't be around for a few weeks, who happened to be quite central to the current plot. So I was faced with needing to very quickly come up with something we could play that would let me think up story and stats easily.

So we pulled out the character sheets for our Dresden Files game and in about 20 minutes I had the players looking into the activities of DJ Death, a nightclub DJ and aspiring necromancer using allies to kill college students to add to his zombie forces.

Next week they'll be taking him on face to face. I love this game, and how easy it is to run with, even at short notice.
