Author Craft / Re: NYT: A Game That Honed the Skills of Writers
« on: September 24, 2011, 09:51:45 PM »
Hm, can't see the article.

17
But then there's this:

As the guy who helped Serak develop his theory on the drive back from the DC signing, I can unequivicably confirm that, at the creation of the thread, there was no WoJ as to wether Fitz was cursed or not.  That statement was placed in the OP as a clue for the rest of the forumites as to who we thought his parents were.

So which is it?

18
Yeah, I get all that. The problem seems to be that part of this theory comes from Serack, the WOJ guy. But that doesn't mean it was a WOJ. It could just be fan speculation that's getting more traction because of the source. I'm waiting for someone to clarify the issue before it carries on any further. Was it a WOJ, when/where, who can confirm?

19
Wait.

So what's pure speculation and what's WOJ?

If something is WOJ, when and where did it happen? Who can confirm?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_hair

"Red or reddish-tinged hair is also found in other European populations particularly in the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as parts of the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, France, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Russia and South Slavic countries."

The problem is the timing. If Fitz was the son of either Tera of MacFinn, where was he during Fool Moon? Tera would have had to have been pregnant long before that point. Did she and (millionaire, I believe) MacFinn just dump the kid somewhere? With no resources or support structure, when MacFinn sure as hell could have afforded it? That doesn't make sense.

22
Better do that quick then, old threads now get purged after a certain amount of time.

Hey Serack, did you ever get this interview? http://www.wizardsharry.com/dresden5.html

I actually just pushed my original Chapter 1 to 3 and rewrote a new 1-2 to create a more exciting beginning.

Be careful with this. I haven't read your stuff, so I don't know exactly what you've done, but from here it sounds like something I've seen a lot of editors and agents complain about - the High Action Intro tacked on to the novel solely because the author was told to have a more exciting beginning. The major complaint with these beginnings is that they often have nothing to do with the rest of the plot. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. Again, I haven't read your stuff so I don't know if this applies to you, but it's something to keep in mind.

Author Craft / Re: Question for... Everybody, I Guess

I'd suggest popping over to the Absolute Write forums at some point, too. It's a great place to see what other writers in your genre are thinking and they've got a section there just for critique. Also, if you're looking to publish at some point, the Ask an Agent/Ask an Editor and Bewares subforums are invaluable.

Just keep in mind that as a new writer the vast majority of critiques you'll get online will be from other new writers/people who have yet to be published. Not always, but mostly. That doesn't mean they can't give you good advice or that they don't know what they're doing (there's a lot of stuff you can learn from them), but you'll be mostly out of luck if you're holding out for a couple of published authors to look over your stuff.

(psst, hey, Serack - for the Jim Recommends thread, there's also the works of Lois McMaster Bujold. He's mentioned and recced her stuff multiple times. I seem to recall him offering to bear her children at one point, but possibly I am making that up.)

Think of what you want your MC to learn in the scene, and/or what new problem he'll have after it's over.

Fitz is ten years older than Maggie.  ???

If he's related to MacFinn, I don't think he knows it. He was pretty freaked out when he heard Harry. "I'm not crazy, I'm not crazy." I don't he'd have had that much of a reaction if he knew he was part wolf.
