DFRPG / Re: Anyone simplify the DFRPG?

Thanks for all of the helpful replies, particularly devonapple's bullet points. FATE is such a different game philosophically from many others that folks who haven't tried it often rebel when asked to give it a shot.

Players with a particular mindset sometimes have a tough time getting that fresh perspective and seem to want to default to their comfort zone, which is always that old game they've played a lot before. Hopefully I can emphasize the Amber part and de-emphasize the D&D part. See if that helps.

I'll continue to work on them, maybe start out simple and add in later. The problem that I can see with starting simple is that sometimes players will want to re-do their characters once they discover new options which weren't open to them at the start of the campaign.

I guess I'll have to ponder this further.

DFRPG / Anyone simplify the DFRPG?
« on: July 11, 2011, 12:55:16 AM »
I'm just trolling for suggestions and/or links at the moment.

I've got some players who are interested in a Dresden Files style campaign, but they are mostly D&D types who have never played in a FATE-type rules system. When I tried to explain all about aspects and such they got this glassy-eyed look and said they'd rather play something else.

They have played Amber Diceless and if I could put together something similar to that they might be interested. Limited power options, limited choices, etc.

I hate to go so far as to create pregen template characters for them, but that may be an option.

So ... I'm wondering if anyone has put together anything like "FATE lite" or "DFRPG lite" so that I can try to ease them into the game.

I love the concept. I also saw the parallels with Supernatural and DF but I haven't had a chance to develop anything. Yours looks pretty darned cool!

Yeah, and the picture is from this very thread.

It all depends on if the elements he is introducing benefit him or complicate his character's life.  If it benefits him, charge him.  If it complicates things for him, it's a self compel and award him a Fate Point.

I wish that I had your problem here, BTW.   ;D
My sister has this habit as well, introducing plot elements that totally upset the apple cart. It's fun because most of the players are okay with the whole "go with it" philosophy and those compications make the game more enjoyable. I'm glad I have that "problem" too!  ;D

DFRPG / Re: Spellcasters make the others obsolete?
« on: March 05, 2011, 08:43:54 PM »
I don't think that non-spellcasters are "obsolete" but I do think they can feel unloved if the GM isn't careful. By this I mean that Harry tends to drive the action in the books, and since Harry is a spellcaster most of the examples of action we see in the books feature spellcasters. A GM needs to look for ways to put players in situations where other talents become valuable to the team.

DFRPG / Re: My Group Hates the System

I think that one problem that might plague many gamers is that the Dresden Files RPG is so huge. There is a lot of material packed in there and it's all designed to work together in a synergy, so you really need to see how all of the parts work together in order to really understand the game.

While the FATE system may be simple in concept, my players don't like to learn new rules and several of them feel like they just don't "get" this whole aspect thing, along with the vocabulary of "tagging" and so on. It's like speaking a different language and they aren't that interested in picking it up.

So, I can certainly sympathise with you when you say your players don't like the system. Mine don't know enough about the system to know if they like it or not, so they aren't really hooked yet.

This has gotten me wondering if it wouldn't be easier for me to scrap the existing rules and try to piece together something Dresden-like using d20 or Unisystem or some other rules that they would play, then after I get them hooked try to slip in FATE again on them sometime later.

The setting is easy enough to sell, if any noobs have seen Buffy, Charmed, Angel, or other similar shows on TV. And if they are hesitant to jump into an entire DF novel, have them try a short story or two.

The system is a little harder, since it's not as "traditional" as some of the others out there. I have a couple potential players who simply don't want to play using the DF game system, but they say they'd play if I adapt it to D&D or another system that they are more familar with playing.

Some good ideas here. I certainly would love a GM Screen, FATE dice, and Chips (all customized to the Dresdenverse).

I agree that an "Our World, Volume II" would be neat, but seriously we wouldn't want something like this for several years. I mean, each of Jim's novels will have some new material but the core rulebook covers roughly a dozen books and you wouldn't want too many little 1-2 book addon volumes. (Unless they were short PDF updates.)

Have handouts for the players giving a (brief) outline of the FATE system covering the following points:
Skills and difficulties
Aspects and Fate points
How to perform actions/checks
Explanation of Mortal Stunts and Supernatural Powers
If anyone makes some of these handouts, please share. I've got some folks I plan to teach FATE to and anything like this would save me some time....

I think that this is the thread I was thinking about, if you're interested in Fred's comments.

Wish I'd realized there was a direct-order freebie. I just supported my local game shop by buying mine there the other day.  :-\

dresdenized fudge dice seem like a nice idea...
We had a thread on this a few months ago.

1. Fred isn't willing/albe to invest the money on dice at this time.

2. There were some places that quote custom dice. Typically, they charge by the die plus by the face, which would be slightly cheaper than some custom dice because of the two blank faces.

3. I'd buy a set or ten!  ;D

DFRPG / Re: Licensing question in regards to "Quickstart" Rules
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:48:51 PM »
A good question. Several players I know are intimidated by the sheer bulk of material and it would be nice to have a quickplay version which would be significantly smaller.

I've also tinkered with this a little, but never finished the project. I suspect the "company line" would be that it's okay to take parts of FATE 3.0 and condense things, but as soon as you add Dresden-specific elements you run afoul of the IP-police.

Maybe Fred can clarify this?

DFRPG / Re: advice on phasing out WoD in favour of the Dresden Files?
« on: April 03, 2010, 05:56:56 PM »
how do you phase it out? You end that game. Then you start another one.
This is exactly my first thought as well. Let your WoD campaign play itself out in the next few months and then gear up for a new campaign using the Dresdenverse. Let the players know that the new Dresden campaign will be similar in many ways, different in others. Let them know that the power structure will be different, as it's not the same world. In the meantime, let them enjoy their vampires.
