Title: Ask Jim Questions - Today!
Post by: KurtinStGeorge on June 01, 2018, 07:07:07 AM
What follows is copied directly from Jim Butcher's long dormant twitter feed:

My name is Jim Butcher and I write stories.  Ask me anything, Friday at 12:30pm Mountain Time on Reddit!
12:39 PM - 31 May 2018

Just a guess on my part, but Jim must be very, very close to wrapping up Peace Talks; or maybe he's finished and will announce it officially today, seeing as Jim must know he will be asked "how much longer?"

What I really want to suggest is that if your able to do so, now would be a good time to ask Jim some deep questions that he might answer.  Something less obvious and direct as "who fixed Little Chicago?" or overasked like "Why did you choose Chicago to set the story in?"  I have to work Friday afternoon so I'm counting on you guys to ask some interesting questions only members of this forum could come up with.  Sorry I wasn't able to post this earlier, but I just got in on a late flight from Los Angeles and am about to hit the sack.

What does Vadderung know that Anduriel doesn't?

Who were the first wizards? Was mortal magic use kicked off by Zoroaster?

Is Vadderung any less powerful or less of an Immortal for spending so much time on Earth, or is he just at a higher risk?

I don't do Reddit. Can we elect a representative to copy/paste a bunch of questions? I'll post a few of my own here.

1. How much of Bob's personality when he was with Harry is a result of his time with Justin? Did Harry know what Bob was when he dug him out of the ruins of Justin's house? Basically, was Justin as much a d-bag as Harry claims, or was he more like Harry than he's willing to admit?
2. Where did Elaine's pentacle amulet come from? Did she inherit it from her parents, did she make it, or did she pick it up somewhere?
3. Is Cowl's true identity a named character we've already met?
4. Does black magic have its origins from the Outside? Does the Blackstaff function similarly to the Outer Gates in that regard?
5. Was William the Conqueror the last Starborn running around, and was Hastings/the rest of the Norman invasion actually a Winter/Summer Fae Conflict played out with mortal cats-paws?
6. Was the Battle of Stamford Bridge the last attempt Odin made to hang onto guarding the Outer Gates? (Also, is the story of the berserker true, and, if so, did his descendants start an auto repair shop called the Full Moon Garage?:))
7. You said Lash would be in Ghost Story; was she the Fallen whispering in Harry's ear during the reveal near the end, or was her appearance somewhere else? (This should settle some debates here).
8. Is Harry going to be a Helicopter Dad? Will he make a bunch of charms and enchanted items to protect Maggie? Or will he learn from Eb's example?
9. When can we expect to see Agent Tilly again?

Cinder Spires
1. Is this set on Earth, on some distant planet eons in the future, or in an alternate universe entirely (similar to Alera)?
2. Silkweavers aren't Vord, right?
3. Are you planning on adding short stories to this canon, or are you going to stick to novels only?
4. What causes ironrot?

While I desperately hope this is true, I think it's a publisher-requested commitment to help promote Brief Cases. I recall Jim stating in one of the AMAs that he doesn't have any control over it, it's set up by his people.

Still, they've got to know that any fan rabid enough to participate in an AMA is going to be frothing at the mouth for Peace Talks news, so who knows?

As a side note, is anyone going to any of the Brief Cases signings? I'm thinking about heading to the one in Manhattan, but I'm out on Long Island, and it's a bit of a hike.

He's mentioned that a "Saint" is a type of mortal champion that is discinct from the Knights of the Cross.  What are they, exactly?

Is Ferrovax responsible for guiding mortal technology (tie in via the term ferromancy)?
Was Mother Winter ever mortal?
Will Ramirez ever have any luck with women?
Why did Harry not take the noose away from Nicodemus when he had the chance in either Death Masks or Small Favor?
Is nuclear technology purely a mortal, physical thing, or does radiation have a magical component, like fire and water do?
Are there any other Black Court Elders left apart from Mavra?
Kringle exists. Does Krampus?
Cowl used the incantation "Dorosh" in Dead Beat. Was this a reference to the sorcerer character in Pan Voyevoda?

Hihi... that’s fancy way of saying he’s nearly halfway done. ;P I hope he spends time in the editing process instead of rushing at this point as that has been a big weakness of his releases; lack of good editing.

Well (assuming that demon was telling the truth) we know that being a Saint is mostly like being a Wizard in terms of Power and scope.  So if he actually created the Curse Im guessing it was a DeathCurse.

Ancient Mai is the Oldest Wizard on the Council (by certain measures). Theory confirmed, w00t!

Quote
5) Ancient Mai carries the title for oldest wizard on the Council, but does not see herself as a leadership figure, and regarded Langtry's talents as more suitable than her own for the role of Merlin.

Oh, they didn't wind up on Mab's shit list.

They wound up on the Custodian's shit list.

And yeah, obviously, we're going to use them more later. I'm too lazy to spend energy to build things I won't use. :D

That was in reply to this
Quote
First, thank you for creating such amazing stories. I was lucky enough to discover Storm Front a few months after it was released and I've been laughing, crying, and throwing my book across the room ever since. I can't wait for Brief Cases and the new Zoo story!

The question I'm hoping you'll answer:

Will we ever learn more about the frozen prisoners in Arctis Tor?

The Byzantine lovers, the cardinal, the spider (who I think is Arachne), and the three women? I'm fascinated about who they were, how the ended up on Mab's shit list (if that's why they're there), and if they'll ever be freed.

Thanks again!

Well I definitely wasn't expecting some of these answers.

Quote
1) Teach it? VERY quickly. She could alter your perception of time and give you months of pure mental lessons in an evening. If she just did it for you while you sit in the passenger seat? She can do that instantly.

2) Well, with the White Council for sure, and with a lot of human authorities. But if he'd become a friggin' necromancer, he would have found his allies among the dead and dead-adjacent, and things would have generally been a lot gothier. :)

3) Maybe.

4) I can.

5) Can't think of a reason to have him around for Harry's story. Might be a different case in a spinoff.

6) Because it wasn't pressing pause. It was just sustaining them for the duration of the transformation. Once the transformation dropped them back into their mortal form again, it was time to pay the piper. They paid for their life with life, the way all vampires do. They just chose not to take someone else's. But younger half-vamps, like Susan, would have been okay, just older and a lot more tired.

7) HHWB, being a Walker, is an outsider on a power level similar to Uriel. He can do all KINDS of stuff. But also has a lot of weird limits as to when and where he can use his power.
That last one punches a bit of a hole right through my theory about HWWB being the final thing Harry gets into a slugfest with in the series. Still, it was worth staying awake for this.

Who is the Custodian???
He answered that question again later on.  Looks like he thought it was asking about Demonreach at first, so the Custodian is just Alfred.

Answered agian he said:

Quote
Processing...

OH THOSE GUYS.

Yeah, I know who they all are. I don't have a further story role set for them at the moment, they're just part of Mab's backstory. That's kind of her trophy case of personal victories.

If I remember right they're Vlad Tsepes and his lover (who wanted to be together forever), Richlieu (Mab always collects eventually, no matter how tricky you are), that's not Arachne it's friggin' Anansi (Mab, too, knows hubris), and the triumverate of women was actually two women with Mab pulling a Scooby Doo move and hiding among them. Trying to remember, they were a pair of historical French or German or British twin sisters who were burned as witches by a Saint. Mab saved them, sort of. Instead of being burned to cinders, they were transformed to living crystal and used to decorate her bower. Mostly, Mab defeated the Saint, sort of at the end of the middle ages/opening of the Renaissance, when there hadn't been all that many Old Word wins lately.

They aren't really a part of Harry's story, just background details for Mab. Anansi is too much a trickster to be caught forever. He'll get free at some point and have a merry vengeance on Mab's pride and ego. She's just so serious, all the time, a guy like Anansi couldn't do anything BUT give her the grumpy camp counselor treatment once he was free. :)

Quote
1: How fast could Lash teach magic? The bit about being able to teach Harry how to heal his hand in Dead Beat implied that it was several dozen times faster than normal (because there's no way he'd be able to pick up healing before his hand healed normally on his own).

2: How exactly would the version of Changes where Harry does the Darkhallow have gone afterwards? It seems like the kind of thing that would burn his bridges with absolutely everybody.

3: You've previously mentioned that Morgan might appear in book 17 (Mirror Mirror), is that still on track?

4: Can you tell us more about the details of how Ways work and how two people working in the same spot can end up in different places?

5: Will the Shapeshifting Guru from the Ukraine mentioned in the list of freeholding lords in White Night play a role in the series or will it be like the Jade Court and not appear in the series?

6: Why did the half-turned Red Court and Cassius experience sped-up aging the moment they lost the thing stopping their aging? Shouldn't they have just gone back to aging at normal rate if the Red Court half of them was just pressing the proverbial pause button?

7: Did He Who Walks Behind slow down time around the clerk who tried to run in Ghost Story? If no, how was he slowed down?

EDIT: Why could Harry understand Sharkface's name while He Who Walks Behind's name was just an impression that HWWB gave him?
Best I could come up with on short notice.

It's disappointing to learn Jim is only at about the halfway point, but I'm glad to be given accurate information about where he is in the writing process and that he's in a more comfortable situation for doing his work.  I won't be expecting Peace Talks until next Spring or even Summer.  I will be surprised if he finishes in September, we'll see.

Well now I'm more confused than I was before the AMA.

We have in the books that Vlad Tepes went over to the Black Court, in the last AMA that he created the Black Court after turning himself into the first one by botching some plan to win his father Drakul's approval, and now in this one that he made a Fae bargain to be together forever with his lover and wound up frozen in Mab's prison garden / trophy case. From everything Jim has said previously about Blampires in Q&As I'm surprised at one of them still having the psychological room for things like romantically caring about anyone else, unless Vlad is somehow different via being the first one.

I'm not sure what to make of the couple in Byzantine outfits looking 'young' instead of 'rotten' if he's the BCV king, either. Maybe a glamour because Mab's aesthetic sensibilities would have been offended by keeping the true form of a BCV around the garden? Or somehow the king stays human-looking and it's his progeny who rot? Maybe his lover was a mortal woman and they went to the Fae because turning her wouldn't have been a satisfactory way to be "together forever" due to the defects in second-generation and later blampires?

In any case, I'm pretty shocked at the core concept that Mab has been keeping the Black Court King as a lawn ornament and that's not fodder for any further story plans.

Separately, the mention that Simon Pietrovich was an Earth specialist might be a blow against the Simon=Cowl theory since Cowl never seemed to do anything particularly earth-centric. A specialist geomancer probably could have squashed that lava barrier Harry used to cover the retreat in White Night quite easily instead of waiting for it to subside.

He's either lying, misremembering, or telling the truth.  Since the Black Court story has changed several times, I'm not sure what to think.

No, Drakul is something else.  His son was the one that was originally said (perhaps misinterpreted) as "joining" the Black Court in an act of rebellion.  Then it was that he created the Black Court when something he tried went awry.  Now it's that he's in Mab's garden.

Of course, all three could be accurate, but it's a stretch.  He could have accidentally become a Blamp (which already existed) while trying to do something else, then founded the formal Court, and then got frozen.  But that all seems unlikely.

Yeah, all three being accurate would be pretty tough considering the last AMA also said hierarchy among Blamps is basically a matter of strength and will to beat the stuffing out of anyone who crosses you, and newbies start out at the bottom. Besides, I'm pretty sure the WOJ about accidentally turning himself was specific to creating himself as the first one.

It's possible Jim might have misremembered or changed his mind on one of the AMA's. I doubt he's deliberately throwing out misinformation to avoid spoilers on a reddit AMA (since he could just pick from plenty of other questions to answer instead). It seems most likely to me that the in-book line is wrong though, either due to Eb being misinformed or pulling a 'nothing to see here' on a topic Harry wasn't ready for at the time.

*Cackles in delight* So in addition to my comment on the Custodian and the actual custodian whom appears,(custodian of the sand box would be apt) I just want to point out an oblique fact that probably means nothing but ya won't be able to prove so anytime soon...
In his reply about Vadderrung he says those Gods who wanted to walk beside and guide humanity. Odin walks beside humanity, really!? That may be an unintentional clue or an intentional word troll, but i'm surmising reasons why 3 deity seem to be the prominent association despite 4 being the repetitive offering...

I'm glad we got more of mabs backstory, at least via those she has on ice.

I think it's safe to assume if Dresden had the Chuck Norris Mantle, Storm Front would have been 50 pages long.  Dresden would have won, the series would have been finished, and the first 49 pages would have been him having sex with Murphy.

And Susan, and maybe Kim too.
Heh. An explosion of memes.

I think the point we're missing is, if the Walkers are on level with TWG's highest level enforcers, and they're servants to the Lord of Slowest Terror... Who's level is LoST on?   :-\
I think it's a mistake to assume we've seen anything close to "TWG's highest level enforcers."  Hell, I dont really think we've actually seen /mab's/ highest level enforcers (no, Harry and Molly dont count).  We've seen mid- to high-level operators that /fit/ through the cracks The Outsiders currently have in Reality.  We havent so much as actually /seen/ the battlefields that Angels fight on, or any of the things that those (two now) rank-and-file angels are there to fight.

Think about it: the fact that angels are not taking the field at the Outer Gates likely means they have bigger fish to fry somewhere.  (That or Free Will limitations at play)

I thought the Arches were at the top, above all the other angels (including the Thrones)

*also the direct Uriel=Before power comparison is perhaps a key towards walkers and angels in fact being on similar plains of existence.

I pretty much figured the angels and the Outsiders must have been at odds in prehistory already. Uriel said in SG when Charity wanted him to avoid risking himself against the squires while he was mortal that he'd been fighting in wars before Earth existed. The Fallen rebellion is probably one, but for it to be wars plural, the outsiders look like the next most likely candidate. Particularly given Before's claim that this was once their world.

That said, his specific answer was that Walkers are on a level similar to archangels, not absolute equality. Like maybe a Walker could make Uriel sweat in a straight fight, but he'd still have a healthy advantage.

Also, the answer to the question about what Lasciel would have done for Denarian Harry kind of makes me want to revise the probability of Mirror Harry having taken up the coin. I had thought Hannah Ascher was basically already constructed as a foil to Harry who said yes to Lasciel, and it would be repetitive to make that one of the differences in MM. But James Bond Harry might be different enough to make for a good antagonist.

If you mean Archangels like Uriel then sure, but those are VP's, not Enforcers, and they are the ones sitting down to play a multidimensional chess-game even though they could wipe the board out.  I dont think we'll ever see him take the field because I dont think any of hte other characters can actually perceive it.  But I do think we'll see actual Forces of Heaven that take the field and sling Power. Hell Too (Hell's Bells Y'all).

But Id be careful pulling RW angelology into it with things like Thrones that havent been mentioned yet.  In the hierarchy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_angelology) where Thrones appear they rank Archangels in the 3rd tier

To confirm, I'm talking about this.
Quote
HHWB, being a Walker, is an outsider on a power level similar to Uriel. He can do all KINDS of stuff. But also has a lot of weird limits as to when and where he can use his power.
As for the tiers, the third seems like the only one that interacts with mortals.  Even if they're lower in power (which I'm not sure of) they're still the "enforcers".  A pebble in a sling is more dangerous than a stable boulder.

But I don't see them as tiers ranked 1-3.  I see them more like Courts with different job responsibilities.  So the Arches, Seraphim, and Dominions might all be equal. (Milton said Luci was a Seraphim, for example)

Right.   What I was trying to say is that I REEEEAAAAALLLLLY dont think that the Walkers are equivalent to Archangels.  Mab or the Mothers, maybe, but not the sort of Trans-dimensional, outside-of-time being that Uriel is.

Dude... they are literally trans-dimensional, their appearance being based on what reality they are trying to crack open, and they are Outsiders... Outside of time? Time is after all a part of reality, an idea unto itself(hell, a powered avatar unto itself by Mab's pronoun) and even the NN isn't exactly subject to time... also, Before was directly comparedto the weight class of Mab, deeper even, if not 'bigger'(though that's probably just a point for description of comparison of living spirit vs Redead one). Not saying I think they are Archangel level or not, just saying lol.

I think they might be equivalent to what Archangels are able to do on our plane of existence without breaking it. Sort of like how the Mothers don't leave the Nevernever because otherwise reality would warp around them like a gravity well.

What intrigues me is that Jim states that they have weird restrictions on when/where they can use their power. Maybe because it comes from Outside? Once they're here they can't use it to its full extent, which is why Harry was able to kick He Who Walks Before's ass so thoroughly. But Outside is a different reality altogether, and they can do all sorts of insane things.

Well TWG locked them all out, and they are only allowed in because this "sandbox" belongs to mortals, and if they invite you in, it's their Choice...  So TWG making the rules sounds like He is the big cheese to everything.

Guess we know who stole Mother Winters Walking stick.  By stole I mean he walked up, took it out of her hands and walked away whistling Dixie
