Title: Different Avatars?
Post by: Paige on May 26, 2006, 05:36:22 PM
There’s only specific avatars to choose from? Can’t bring in other pictures?  Sorry, I’m new to the whole message board thing. I’m forcing myself here, just cause I can’t stand the thought of missing all that used to happen on the list.  :-\

Just the fixed list of avatars for now.  For some reason, the software has been really persnickety about allowing the uploading of avatars (in other words, it don't work, for reasons which appear to have stumped some experts I asked about it).  So you're stuck with what we've got -- apologies!

(If there's something Jim-related out there that seems to be missing, I'm happy to add in new avatars, just let me know.)

Also, since you brought it up, you can sign up to be notified whenever something new gets posted to a particular thread, or all of a particular forum.  Just click on the "notify" button at the top of a thread or a forum and you'll be signed up for notices by email.

Iago has already said that the board has a issue with importing differetn avatars... they hope to have it fixed soon.

To be honest, I kind of like having themed avatars for this board.

:o Oh. Makes sense. Thanks! My head is spinning...I'll get used to it.

That was my slowly-developing opinion as well.

What I'm trying to do, for the time being, is this: give individual moderators (Fred and Ashton) and important people (Shannon and Jim) their own avatar icons, so their posts will stand out in more ways than one.

It's possible eventually that we'll extend the ability to link to externally-stored avatars for "good citizens" and the like, but that's a ways off. :)

Go to your profile (link at the top of the page), and edit your 'Forum Profile Information', found on the right.

Could we have a Mouse avatar?

Thanks!

Tough one!  I don't have any art that references Mouse just yet, but I'll make an icon if I do.

I really like the avatars, but what the heck is personal text, right underneath it in settings?  Is it associated with the avatar in some way?  It's clearly not a signature, that's in another box... I guess I'll have to test it and find out!

edit - aha!  personal text goes under the avatar!  hooray for experimentation!

This board appears to be quite similar to xsorbit boards (of which I mod/admin 3).  If it is as close as I believe, there is a section in the admin control room to allow REMOTE avatars.

I use tinypic.com for such things.

Just an FYI.  I kinda like themed avatars too.

P.S.  Any rule on banners?  ;D  cuz I like my Sephy banners (only have about 10 of them)

No rule on them yet, but don't get outta hand with 'em. :)

Nice, SMF was a good choice. I looked into it for a RPing community site before I stumbled on a vBulletin license.

Just a wild guess, but the uploading avatar issue is probably a permissions issue on the image directory you're writing to. I had no problem uploading avatars on a test SMF installation, but I've run into that problem with a phpBB board before.

Still, themed avatars are a pretty good idea for an author-centric site :-)

I would very much like an outright ban on images in signatures, or at least a sane height (60px?), though.....

Nope, it's not that.  The permissions check out.  I can even get stuff written to that directory when I have it download an image that's too large and resize it to size constraints, storing it locally.  It just doesn't like accepting uploads (it seems) for some reason -- even though PHP is configured to allow file uploads, and regardless of whether or not PHP is configured to run in "safe mode".  It's a stumper!

Would you accept 'donated icons' to the board? Icons fans have made, that are related to the books.  Because I've got several.  Understandable if the answer is no.

I kinda like personal avatars, but if the general consensus (i.e., Fred decides ;D) to go with themed avatars, I'm not going to squawk.

Fred, will you accept submissions of themed avatars for addition to the "stable"?

I like the concept of themed avatars as well, although I have a couple of non-Harry ones that I typically use on message boards so I could go either way on this issue.

I notice that Fred got one not on the list, though.  ;)

I know. My point was just that important people got to import icons of a non-Butcher variety.  ;D

The rest of us get to fight over the others.  ;)

Can we at least be allowed to use external avatars, for those of us with hosting?
Title: Re: Different Avatars?
Post by: iago on May 27, 2006, 05:27:29 PM
For now, we're gonna stick with themed avatars stored on the server, with the possibility of expanding later on so that established members can link to external avatars (though my particular part of the jury is still out on this).

The avatar I have is, indeed, of me -- I wanted the idea that the moderators of the board stood out a little to be in place.  You'll find, when they post, that Jim, Shannon, and Ashton have personal avatars as well.

I would welcome submissions of themed avatars, certainly.  I'm trying to keep them in a relatively consistent format ("Livejournal Friendly" -- 100x100, with a nested white and black border around the content), but if you don't mind me tinkering with the ones you've put together to make them fit that, I'm happy to take submissions in whatever form.

That said, I'd also prefer that you contact me by private message (there's a little icon over on the left, I think) with any submissions/requests, rather than posting to the thread, but really, get 'em to me however, and I'll put them under consideration.

Thanks, Fred, and I'll see what I can find. I don't think I ever sent you that pic of Bob, who I heisted from a luncheon table at RT in Reno a few years ago. Maybe I can catch him when his eyes are glowing.  ;D

As avatars, I've noticed Jim & Fred actually look alot alike. Hrm.

I've also noticed that in avatar form (ie, cropped), Jim looks like a Phil Pfoglio character. ;)

Trust me, it's the camera angle. :)  Tho they do look more alike since Fred dropped the electric blue hair...

Must say tho, Fred, your avatar photo is quite flattering.

Bwahaha, perfect. Mind if I gank a couple, at some point, to use as livejournal icons? I've been needing some good Dresden Files icons for a while. :D

And yeah. It would be nice at some point to allow external icons - I have a nice "geek!" icon I like using for places like this.

Yup!  Anyone is free to gank any of my icons for LJ use, as long as they credit LJ user "Priscellie" (same as my id on this board) in the comments.

See! I knew I didn't spell that right! :D

"Priscilla" + "Ellie" = Priscellie.  My real name is Priscilla, but because my best friend at age 12 convinced me that if I used my real name online, stalkers would kill and eat me, I introduced myself with the pseudonym "Ellie."  Three years later, I got fed up of hiding behind an alterego and came out.  My online friends nicknamed me "Priscellie" to poke fun at my paranoia. :D

Yes, I know how it is for friends to nickname you to make fun of your dysfunctions.  My real name is April.  I hate that, so I found out my name in Japanese is Shigatzu.  So my friends started calling me Shiggy, which if you think of it is like calling me Ape or Apey in English. (neither of which will I ever respond to). :)

Someone asked for a Mouse icon.  Here's a Caucasian puppy, one version still and one with a quote.  Note the velvet Elvis floor rug. :D

(http://theninemuses.net/art/dresden/icons/mouse2.jpg)  (http://theninemuses.net/art/dresden/icons/mouse-anim.gif)

Also, someone (Mickey?) requested an animated icon of the fire flareup in the TV thread.  Feel free to suggest captions.  Danke to Kalium for the caps!

And a few variants of The Archive, because I felt like it (or rather, because I am indecisive).  Original image by everyone's favourite photographer of exceptionally creepy children, Loretta Lux, used without permission.  Mild photoshoppage (change of hair color) by me.

(http://theninemuses.net/art/dresden/icons/archive6.jpg)  (http://theninemuses.net/art/dresden/icons/archive4.jpg)

As always, if you want to use one of my icons for this or any forum, please upload the image to your own server or to Photobucket (or your favourite free image hosting site).  If you use one on LJ, credit lj user Priscellie.  Also, crediting Loretta Lux for the Archive icons and Kalium for the caps for the fire icon would be cool as well.

Any chance of having them available here?
