I just read the post by Iago on the announcements page about supporting the prices for servers (I know I'm a little behind on the times) and I was wondering if there is any way I can get any proceeds from buying a book on my Kindle to go through to the forums.
-
Absolutely!
1. Go to the book/Kindle book/CD/electronic device/foot massager and scroll down to the "Product Details" section
2. Copy the ASIN -- it should be something like "045146365X"
3. Click on the Amazon link for any item in our store (http://jim-butcher.com/store/).
4. Replace the numeric value in the URL with your item's ASIN: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/045146365X/iagonet (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/045146365X/iagonet)
5. Go to that URL. It should be identical to your item's product page, but the "iagonet" at the end is a tag that lets Amazon know we sent you. Place your order from there. You'll pay the same price as before, but Amazon will give us a small cut of the transaction.
6. Bask in the knowledge that you're helping the boards stay alive and healthy!
-
This works for any item bought on Amazon right? So if I were to by a WoT book with this method the proceeds still help out here?
And is there any way to do it directly from my Kindle?

1. Absolutely everything! If you want to buy an exercise bike or a flat screen TV through Amazon, you can use this technique.
2. Not that I'm aware of, no.
-
Anyone know if buying through this link will work for us Brits too (don't see a reason why it shouldn't but I'm a compooter noob & it's all priced in $ which confused my tiny math brain ;D so better check!) If it doesn't is there any way we can donate to the cause from afar?
-
I would also like to know if it works for us Europeans? And calculating $ into my currency is easy: 1$ is exactly 5 kunas :)
-
*sighs* Why does everyone elses currency sound so much cooler than ours. Pounds. Boring! I want Sheckels or Bhat or Kunas!
-
No, we don't have a referral system with Amazon.uk or .ca--just Amazon.com.
-
No, we don't have a referral system with Amazon.uk or .ca--just Amazon.com.
Although they should be able to reach the US Amazon and order through there, they would just have to pay a little more for shipping. I used to buy books from Amazon UK all the time

Ahhhh why did no one tell me this? I order my textbooks through amazon.com and they cost quite a bit, is the amount that goes to the site based on a percentage of how much is spent ?
-
Could it work for other countries? I preordered GS for Kindle, but I probably will be buying another ebooks.
-
this sounds realy neat, as I do buy stuff from amazon from time to tiem. it also sounds a bit on techy side. as a sugesting, would it be possibel to make a genric 'buy it from amazon thru us link'?
-

That would be very useful, since the process sounds complicated. And I'm not really that good with computers ::)

*Is sad*

In fact, it sounds a little complicated. I'll worry when I'll buy something, though.
But Duck's suggestion would be really useful, as many of us buy things in Amazon.

I think that for books, it varies between 6 and 10%. They have a complicated system of variables involved in determining the percentage.
-

As long as you're buying through Amazon.com, it should work.
-

That's what our site store is! Clicking on any item in the site store will take you to our "branded" Amazon page for that item. My little tutorial only applies when you're buying an item not offered in our store, like some other author's book or a Blu-Ray player or a sweater set for your dog.
-

Complicated? It's a single copy and paste function. :D Grab the ASIN for the product you want and paste it into the "branded" URL generated by any item in our store.
-
What Im sugesting is streamlining and advertising it a bit, outside this thread :)
like put a section area called 'buy thru us' with a stickied set of instructions, and a blank item order button they can just put the ISN in :)
then, considering how competive and geeky we forum types can be, maybe allow members who go thru this to have a $ beside their stars?
speaking as a buissinessperson, I bet you will double your regular intake if more folks than just the ones who happened to stumble on this thread down here in the bottom of the mods section were aware of how this can be done?
it pays to advertise ;D
-
I agree about the need of advertising!
-
Truly, what you need is a connection thru PayPal to eBay.
Big moolah would be yours!

You guys buy stuff through a rain forest? I prefer to get mine from the antarctic circle myself, seems to be fresher coming from the cold climate.
anyway, Priscellie, you guys have anything like that for B&N?

We get a residual when you buy from B&N through our store, but we don't have any magic code to apply to non-store stuff.

Amazon.com and BN.com info is covered above, check.
Do Borders and, for that matter, the Shop Indie Bookstores links in the Store also pay referral compensation to jim-butcher.com or to jimbutcheronline.com?
For example, say that there's a Borders link for a particular item at jim-butcher.com/store.
- Is it solely Amazon and Barnes & Noble which actually help support the main site and forum site financially or do all four of the bookseller links do so?
- If the Borders or indies links do pay compensation, do all four linked booksellers pay roughly equivalently?
Please understand, I'm not in any way trying to be improperly nosy. I don't want numbers at all.
It's just that if I as a purchaser am choosing between the same item at close to the same price which is offered by more than one seller, then if I knew that Bookseller-A pays twice as much compensation to the site as does Bookseller-B or Bookseller-C, then I could make that one of the factors when I decide where to transact my purchase.
An answer of more, less, they're equal, or "that's none of your never-mind, that is our proprietary information and not for you to know" -- any of those would be completely up to you.
Thanks! When I'm going to spend roughly x number of dollars on a purchase anyway, then it's advantageous to know whether one choice entails more overall benefits than another choice.
A reply in the thread or a personal message, whichever you may decide is appropriate, would be fine with me.
I didn't want to bother a mod or admin with my question, so here in the thread you have the choice to answer or not, whiatever you feel is best. Thanks.

I wanted to point out that I bought the DFRPG even though I don't tabletop game because a) It looked like an awesome product and wanted another Dresden Files hit, and b) Since Fred Hicks (Iago, the owner of the forum) is the one that runs Evil Hat, the guys that made the DFRPG, I felt it was a pretty good way to help support the forums.
Heck maybe if enough sell it'll cover some daycare (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,1285.msg917342.html#msg917342)

If so, it's negligible. I think Booksense never paid out over the course of the several years we used 'em (save for a pittance right at the end), and I haven't heard Fred mention anything about profits from Borders or IndieBound. B&N's affiliate program is maddeningly opaque. Whenever he and I talk about the money he generates from the site store, it's always in terms of Amazon and CafePress.
And hey, the greater number of sales of each item Jim's store gets from Amazon, the greater percentage we get in profit! You can view the percentage breakdown here (https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/join/compensation.html). Say 300 people buy GHOST STORY through our affiliate link. The book is about ten bucks on Amazon ($9.99), so at 7%, we'd get $210! It all adds up beautifully. :D I have no idea if that's anywhere near the numbers we see from the store (in fact, I'm pretty sure they're higher), but that's just an example.
And never underestimate the value of appending the store-friendly identifier to other products not advertised in our store. I know that in 2011 alone, I've spent nearly $100 in Amazon mp3 products, which are at a 10% fixed residual rate, so because I appended the identifier, $10 of that went to Fred. When I bought my Blu-Ray player, $8 went to Fred. Plus about $12 in residuals from everything else I've bought on Amazon since January. $30 from ONE PERSON's Amazon spending! Stuff I was planning to buy anyway is helping to pay for the website and Evie's daycare.
If more forumites took the extra thirty seconds to append the store-friendly identifier to their purchases (as I detail here (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,25288.msg1073171.html#msg1073171)--I promise, it's less complicated than it looks!), things would bode very well for the site's future AND Evie and Hickslet mk 2's college funds. :D It's better than any "Donate to keep the site alive" button, because it doesn't cost you a dime!

Priscellie, as always, thanks for being helpful, thorough and gracious with a prompt reply.
I really wish that more forumites knew. I strongly suspect that many or most of us haven't known about the substantial advantage of site-linked Amazon purchasing, or at least haven't thought about it recently enough to readily remember to do so when they're ordering.
It's natural for forum folks to appreciate the untold people-hours given by mods and admins which keep this forum community healthy and enjoyable. To keep in mind that server hours, hosting and out-of-pocket site expenses mean that there are actual money costs involved to keep this ship up and running are perhaps seldom considered.
I wish that there was an avenue, besides this particular thread, which unobtrusively brought this "buying power" choice closer to the forefront of forumites' awareness.
Again, most sincere thanks.

As always, Serack, you're right. Being just a thread post, then Priscellie or iago or whomever could feel freer to choose to answer or not. Just didn't wish to come off as intrusive.

Gratz!!!!!!!!!!!!! (if it does) :D :D :D

Great news about Baby Iago. Will he be known as Iago?
Speaking of ordering through Amazon - last week I signed up for Ghost Story, which qualified on its own for free shipping with me paying only $14.71, so I decided to add Hexed, because I'm a Kate Daniels fan. When I got to the checkout, it added $2.45 shipping for the paperback. This annoyed me so I deleted Hexed but am looking forward to Ghost Story.

That's weird. Did you select "Ship my items together"?

Probably not. I just figure they should do things the way I want automatically. Besides, although I really like Jim I'm not that fond of Dali.

Bump, because this topic is important in helping the forums flurish.
I utalized this info to start a topic in the WoJ section (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,28458.msg1220095.html#msg1220095) giving Forum Members a way to easily buy books Jim recommends in such a way that the purchases benefit the forums.
-
Thanks, Serack! That's an excellent idea, putting the info in the WOJ section where folks are far more likely to see it. Lots and lots of forum members regularly check out your WOJ section much more frequently than this one.
If you may later be adding more "liked it a lot" books to those which you've already posted there, Jim named five favorites when NPR (National Public Radio) surveyed for which books should comprise their top 100 list.
Jim's post: http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,26713.msg1138595.html#msg1138595 (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,26713.msg1138595.html#msg1138595).
-
Oh, I'm going to be doing a lot of work in that topic adding other recommendations (He's made a lot over the years. I had to start somewhere, and it takes a bit of time for me to insert in the sheer volume of links and images.
Thanks for pointing that out for me though, I'll be sure to include those next.
-
I just did my first Amazon purchase with this method. It is only an 8 US transaction, but hopefully I will be doing more in the future. I am happy.

I just thought to bump this topic again having just used the technique myself for the first time (I don't make a whole lot of amazon purchases)
-
Serack! Where ya been?

Priscellie is correct, appending the store-friendly identifier takes about 30 extra seconds. I only buy my Kindle books using the store link. And if I were to put a number to the books, I'd say I've spent enough to make $12* for the site since August 2011 (*at a 6% profit share rate).
It really is quite easy.
-
Yay, I bought two kindle books with the iagonet. Not much money, but I am glad I am remembering to use the system :)
-
Squee! Thanks to all of you! Each little bit adds up in a BIG way.
-
Well, Blood Lite was preordered with this system. Posting here to see if some people decides to imitate me :)

You know, you can just click the links in our store, too. They do the replacement for you! :D
-
Thanks! I am so used to do it when I buy a product that is not in the store here, that I forgot a book with a story of Jim would be :-[ :-[ :-[
-
Ha! It's very appreciated, either way. :D
-
It's become second nature to me too. Anytime I buy something off Amazon, I'll use the JB store link. :D

Release day today for Shannon K. Butcher's paranormal e-novella, "Forget Me Not." Wow, it's finally 7 August! I'm always impatient for release day to roll around when I'm anticipating something fresh and fun to read.
At Amazon, I'm ordering it through this forum's iagonet link http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B007P7HPBS/iagonet (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B007P7HPBS/iagonet)
The e-novella only costs $2.99 but even so, hear that metallic clink? Yep, it's the chink of a few more pennies dropping into the forum's account, helping to defray the costs to keep this forum up and working. 8)

I don't have an e-reader.
And, I'm assuming you can, if so - how?
Many thanks.

Absolutely! In this thread, reply #1 (immediately following the original post) is by Priscellie, laying out the process. It only takes seconds to do and you won't pay one iota extra to do it. What Amazon does, if you plop the ASIN product identifier into the ordering URL, is to treat whatever you buy as if it was listed in this forum's store.
The benefit to all of us is that it helps cover a bit of the costs of jimbutcheronline.com. So, printed books, e-books, music or anything that Amazon sells, whatever you buy at Amazon's site, they all work that way. What I do is scroll down on the page in Amazon of whatever it is I'm buying, find the ASIN down in the details, copy+paste that into a temporary notepad or wordpad screen so I don't have to retype it, then hop over to the store-forum here and click on anything-or-other just to display the iagonet ordering URL. Cut out the wrong ASIN, paste in the other for what you want, and presto, you're ready to fly.
And in terms of not having an e-reader, well, neither do I. Amazon offers Kindle for PC as a free app. Download it, it's quick and smooth, then anything e-text format which you do want to order but don't have a reader for, your computer stands in for an e-reader.
BTW, it's quite likely that some other providers/distributors have some similar kinds of app for e-books. I'm not trying to sell/promote Amazon's Kindle app. It's simply that it's the one I use, it's worked fine for me, and Amazon is the book distributor who best supports this forum finance-wise in my opinion. So, that's why I said Kindle. You must choose whatever you prefer for yourself.
Blaze and I had a similar conversation about e-books without an e-reader. It was on Shannon's forum http://skbbooks.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tsw&thread=129&page=1 (http://skbbooks.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tsw&thread=129&page=1)
Blaze is reply #2. Geneva is reply #7.

Serack has been known to quote that post whenever this subject comes up on the forums :)

I wish I knew about this before. I've spent so much money at Amazon in the last 3-4 years that I think I financed the new NJ warehouse they are building (damn you Chris Christie, I don't wanna pay sales tax). Books, audio CDs, Christmas presents, Magic cards (please no jokes, we all have our guilty pleasures), DVDs, small appliances and so on (ad nauseam).
From now on I'll be ordering through the site.
-
Any possibility of including links (or is there a similar ASIN replacement method that could be used) for ordering a Nook version? Read through the thread and couldn't find anything definitive. I assume since there's links to buy the hardcover versions or the like from B&N, it might be possible for the Nook as well. Unfortunately, as a Nook owner, I don't really have the option to say "Eh, I'll just buy it from Amazon for the good of the site."
-
I preordered Cold Days through this.

Ok, so I may be completely wrong here, but I think I've figured out a replacement method that works for the Barnes and Noble website/Nook books.
Sample link: Original Cold Days link - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/cold-days-jim-butcher/1112694713?ean=9781611761603&cm_mmc=AFFILIATES-_-Linkshare-_-PTGUYWzr6O8-_-10%3a1&
Link to a new book - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dead-past-beverly-connor/1018064310?cm_mmc=affiliates-_-linkshare-_-ptguywzr6o8-_-10%3a1&ean=9781101042083
In this link, the number 9781611761603 is the ISBN number. And the alphanumeric code PTGUYWzr6O8-_-10%3a1& is the affiliate ID that earns the $$ for the site. I tried replacing just the ISBN in that link with a new ISBN, and when the page refreshes, information for the new book shows up, but with the affiliate ID still remains the same. So I'd think that just replacing the ISBN should be enough. Iago should be able to confirm this theory (or knock it out of the park and call me crazy :P ).

Spot, if your workaround can pull this off so that more purchases can get referral compensation as well as the specific ones directly listed in Jim's store, that will be great.

Like I said, I don't know if it will work for sure. Iago's the only one who can tell. :)

Here are 2 priscellie quotes that may pertain to your questions.
We get a residual when you buy from B&N through our store, but we don't have any magic code to apply to non-store stuff.
Patience, guys. I've replaced the ISBN in the store with the ISBN-10, whereas before I'd mistakenly used the ISBN-13 (*shakes fist at B&N*). The correct store-friendly links should percolate through the cache in a couple days. In the meantime, here are the store-friendly links:
Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451464400/iagonet)
Barnes and Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/cold-days-jim-butcher/1112506718?ean=9780451464408&cm_mmc=AFFILIATES-_-Linkshare-_-PTGUYWzr6O8-_-10%3a1&)
The B&N link in the 2nd quote appears to have a button to buy the nook version through the jim-butcher.com website's vendorship... Something I wasn't aware of. I've bought all my dresden books directly through my nook, but this time I might try that link myself.
Edit: The B&N link is also identical to the one on the website store. They both contain a button for buying the nook version.

errrr... bump, I think.
Is there a way we could get some sort of microtransactions/commissions/etc, as discussed in this thread, to support the cost of hosting the Paranet?
