From their website:
Never been to a signing before? Check out this FAQ for our signing policies and what to expect at an event. Don't see that answer you need, give us a call (713-524-8597)

How much does it cost to attend a signing?
Our in-store talk/readings are free.  However, if you want to get any books signed, (including audiobooks, movie memorabilia, e-readers, other items), the author's newest book must be purchased from Murder By The Book.

How do signings work?
Most authors will give a 20-30 minute talk, and then take questions from the crowd. Once the discussion portion of the event is over, we'll line customers up in small groups of ten, based on the their line number, to get their books signed.

How do I get a line number?
To get a line number, you must purchase a copy of the author's newest book from Murder By The Book. We start giving out line numbers on the day the author's newest book is released. You may purchase the book in person, online, or by phone. If you preorder a book, we'll pull a number for you the day the book goes on sale, but customers in the store (or on the phone) when we open that day will get the lower numbers.

Why do I have to purchase the author's new book from MBTB?
Purchasing the book from us is the easiest way to show the publisher that they should keep sending authors to us. Book events are costly. The store has expenses for staying open late, the publisher has travel and lodging to pay for, and the author is spending time away from family and writing.

How early should I arrive for a signing?
That's entirely up to you. We set up chairs an hour an a half before most events. Seating is first come, first served, and can go quickly for large events. We have a microphone for the authors, and plenty of standing room so if you don't get a seat, you'll still be able to see / hear the talk.

Will the author sign my earlier books?
For most events, the first time through the line the author will sign their new book and three older titles. (NOTE: Jim signs three books TOTAL per person) Depending on time and the size of the crowd, well do a second round after everyone's been through the line once to get additional titles signed. A limit may be imposed for authors who draw very large crowds.

Where do I park?
Please do not park in front of any of the open businesses in the shopping center. For large events, additional street parking can be found on Morningside, and South Blvd. We also ask that you do not park behind the store. This area is for employees and authors.

Can I bring food or drink to the event?
Unless provided by the store, food is not permitted at events. We do allow beverages, but ask that it has a lid, and that you throw away the empty cup or bottle instead of leaving it on the floor under the chair. If there is a spill, please let a staff member know immediately.

I can't make it to an event, can I still get a book signed?
YES! Give us a call, stop in, or order online and we'll get a book signed or personalized for you.  We can even ship it.

Can I mail in books to get signed?
We'll get THREE books that you send signed for every ONE copy of the new book purchased from us. Restrictions may be imposed for authors who draw large crowds.  Even if you've already talked to a staff member about sending books, please include a note in the box detailing how many copies of the new book you would like to purchase, how would you like them signed, and your contact information.

You had me at Jim Butcher, actually. But the rest is cool too... Great action scenes, a fascinating world, and characters of a sort I've never seen before. Yup. This is everything I've come to expect from Jim Butcher, but in a delightful new flavor." -- Patrick Rothfuss

OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE INTERNATIONALLY IS SEPTEMBER 29TH.

We understand that some stores will break the "hard release date" and start selling it early. Furthermore, many fans received Advance Reader's Copies at SDCC, so there will certainly be a number of people who have an opportunity to read the book well before the official release.

Because of this, there's a potential for major spoilers leaking before the official release. As such, there is now a rule that book spoilers--no matter how minor--cannot be posted until noon EDT September 29th.  Apologies for those who will have gotten the book and want to discuss it.  We hope you'll understand our decision.

This ban does not include discussion of sample chapter material, which is allowed as long as you follow the rules below.  Also, note that some reviewers will likely post some intense spoilery info before that date, so please avoid discussion of blatantly spoilery nuggets gleaned from reviews.  Feel free to PM one of the mods if you have a question.  Fred, Mickey, Priscilla, and Shecky are all betas, so you don't have to worry about spoiling us.

After the ban is lifted:
  • Be sure to include "[TAW SPOILERS]" at the beginning of the subject line of all topics involving the book.  If you want to talk about The Aeronaut's Windlass in a pre-existing topic that does NOT have [TAW SPOILERS] in the subject line, consider starting a new thread and linking to it (with an appropriate warning) in the old thread.
  • Talk about the book in the Spoilers forum ONLY until the book has been out a FULL YEAR.
  • Most crucially, DO NOT include book spoilers in the subject lines or sigs!  These can be seen from other parts of the forum, so even those trying to avoid spoilers will be subjected to them.

Remember to be respectful of your fellow forum members.  Not everyone reads the book the day it comes out.  If you're uncertain about any aspect of posting etiquette, ask us!  We'll be happy to clarify.  Otherwise, try to err on the side of caution.

Thanks for helping us maintain a fan-friendly forum!  We can't wait to get this discussion underway!

Edit: APRIL FOOL!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY

Due to readers' frustration with the wait between books, Jim Butcher and his editor at Penguin Random House are taking inspiration from one of their favorite film trilogies and declaring a temporary hiatus on publication of the Dresden Files novels.

"I think Peter Jackson had the right idea with the Lord of the Rings movies," Butcher explained. "The trilogy took eight years to make. You can't expect an audience to wait that long between installments. It made more sense to film all three movies simultaneously, then release them back to back. That's what I'd like to do."

He continued, "I mean, these books take a long time to craft.  Each novel is its own challenge with new complexities, and 'Skin Game' was almost double the length of 'Storm Front'.  Brandon Sanderson was kind enough to hook me up with the xenobiologists who grew his hybrid army of alien writer clones, but until these pupae mature, I'm just one man."

Jim will be writing case books 16 through 20ish all at once, then releasing them six months apart.  Then, taking inspiration from Jackson's treatment of The Hobbit, Butcher will split the final Apocalyptic Trilogy into fifteen books, also written simultaneously and released on the same schedule.

Look for "Peace Talks" on April 1st, 2027.
