DF Spoilers / Re: Winter Law
« on: August 09, 2023, 04:57:59 AM »
I don't think this is a case of Mab wanting him checked so much as wanting him educated.

This occurred during CD. It was Harry's first job as Winter Knight and it was about Maeve and her Nemfection.

So, Mab may have been paying closer attention than normal to Harry. He didn't even violate Winter Law, just stated his intention to do so and got a not-so-subtle reminder of his oaths and employment status. She may have even wanted it to occur in this manner so she could rebuke him without it being a public thing before the court. That way she could keep his discipline light.

Sirio was the air dragon though. If he tried to trigger San Anderas, Ferro would have stepped in as the earth dragon.

That's your argument for Cowl to be Nameless but you use the counter argument for Mab not being involved in Harry's early life.

Nameless is an interesting character but Mab and Marcone/Namshiel are better than the Jedi Council at noticing things right under their noses.

79
Uhh, your logic kinda fails here.

If Mab is excluded because she isn't in the 1st 2 books, then Nameless who isn't in any of the novels, can't have a major role such as Cowl.

She’s not a properly mortal practitioner like a Wizard, she’s a Changeling. You are inferring that one set of rules apply to her when it isn’t clear that is the case. We do not have enough information to ascertain whether the same rules apply as regards mortal practitioners, whether she was taught a way to hide this or whatever by Nameless/Cowl. We do however have the facts set our above as regards her and Kumori’s time-line and that of Nameless and Cowl.

She spent decades making sure she was overlooked so as not to get on Maeves radar, so of course she was hiding from everyone.

I'm afraid I've forgotten all the facts about Nameless. Could you please give the book or WoJ quotes outside of those in The Law?

Sarissa cannot be Kumori. Go reread Cold Days for all the reasons.

Wizards get a sense of another wizard by touching them. Sarissa was Harry's physical therapist for 7+ months. There had to be contact there, especially in the early stages where Harry was regaining his mobility. Plus, it would have been easy to engineer an "oopsie" during one of Mab's tests that resulted in Harry's death.

Sarissa would have to be the world's greatest shinobi/wizard/actress to have fooled the Winter Court, Eldest Gruff, Vadderung/Kringle, Maeve and later Nemesis/Maeve and Mab for hundreds of years. If she was that good, Cowl would have been her flunky.

I highly doubt that Kumori wouldn't have taken some action when Harry and Fix went against Maeve. She was going to die if the Outsiders or Maeve won.

Jim's love of foreshadowing has everyone overthinking every new character. Sometimes things are as simple as they appear.

I do think that the Pantheon Gods had a role in this but not so much in holding down humanity as they held down science.

The Pantheon Gods all wanted their specific worshipers to flourish as that increased their power. They also wanted to keep the Outsiders away. In the past, various pantheons guarded the Outer Gates and that is to the benefit of all humanity.

As humanity grew, so did science and technology, which are the forces which allow humanity to resist the Supernatural Nations. The Supernaturals want to keep humanity down, but the tipping point in the race against science came during the Renaissance. After that, humanity expanded too quickly for them to keep up.

So they went into "hiding". The strongest faction, the Fae Courts, still had the role of Outer Gate protectors and the rest need humanity in various predator/prey relationships.

And there we have the White Council, zipping around the planet and interfering when the predators get too much of an upper hand or turn abusive. The Angels step in when their renegades or the Outsiders break the rules but usually work through agents and behind the scenes.

So, humanity keeps moving forward, in large part blissfully unaware of the conflicts in the magical world but there are factions with knowledge outside the White Council. I think the ultimate goal of the Dresden Files is for humanity to put together the magical and scientific worlds and take charge of it's own destiny.

DF Spoilers / Re: Bonnie and the Knights of the Cross, a question
« on: July 06, 2023, 11:19:13 PM »
Well, she definitely doesn't see Michael as any kind of immediate threat. She did reside at the Carpenter home after Cold Days, heck, she was born there. And that means she doesn't have that Fallen vibe or else Uriel would have taken action. Bonnie, at least at this stage of her life, is an innocent. She's more someone the Knights would protect than guard against. And now that she's at the castle, she's shielded from outside influence there and protected by Bob. It would be easier to steal the wooden skull and compel her than it would be to confuse her enough to attack the Knights.

Who is Cowl?

Will Harry actually marry Lara and how will Thomas be saved?

What's going to be the focus of the Dragon book? Are they setting up a marriage for a dragon? If so with which, Hope or Maggie or Molly?

What exactly does it mean to be Starborn?

It wasn't a case of the WK mantle taking over Harry in a moment of rage, it was Harry embracing the rage and becoming the mantle.

The sword burned Harry in this case because he is a Supernatural now. The mantle gives him several powers and he has the fae vulnerability to iron.  The sword did what was necessary to defend Rudy from the Winter Knight but only enough to shock Harry out of the bad choice he made.

That's one possible explanation but not necessarily true. It could just as easily have been a lawyer referred to Marcone through his contract with Monoc. We know for sure that he had that connection, a connection with Nameless is more tenuous.

Why? most Winter Fae can pass for human and would seem to be willing to testify for the Winter Knight... why couldn't they help Harry in a human court?

Sidhe can pass for human, most Winter Fae and certainly most of the Wyldfae can't.

Harry didn't have any Sidhe warriors with him, he had malks, trolls, a Rawhead and other assorted monsters. And he sent them to keep the evacuation path for the daycare open, so they weren't on hand for the battle with the giant and the aftermath which was when Rudolph shot Murphy. Butters and Sanya were on the way, but they also hung back until the the kids and Bradley were clear. Toot and Lacuna may have still been nearby, but I don't think you'd want either of them on the witness stand.

There were no witnesses who saw the actual shooting except Harry and Rudolph. Butters and Sanya were approaching but didn't see the event. There may have been Winter fae that saw it, but that won't help Harry in a human court.

As PG comes well before SF, Marcone didn't have Namshiel's coin at the time of the attack on Arctis Tor.

I think "Nameless son of Loviatar" is a pretty good identifier if push comes to shove.
