DFRPG / Re: Norse Mythology and the Nevernever

In "Changes" Harry mentions that "
(click to show/hide)
" This would suggest that, at least according to JB's version of things, the nature of many of the non-god beings from Norse mythology are essentially the same as the Fae.

I figured I'd spoiler that quote just to be on the safe side.

Personally, I'm thinking an "Our World: Part II" book wouldn't be out of the question a few years down the line.

Now that would be pretty cool, and just about all that I'd need. If anything in the later books didn't fit in with what was laid out in "Your Story", "Our World: Part II" could also present new supernatural powers and/or new trappings to existing powers.

In Nomine is a good source of inspiration in the area of angels and demons. I also like its take on the etherial realm, which corresponds well to the Nevernever. One element that I might use is the idea that when a mortal dreams, they create a temporary demesne in the Nevernever. If you're in the Nevernever, and know where to look, it's possible to enter someone's dream realm, and do any number of things. I'd guess that the demesne boundary would probably count as a threshold, though.

Another great source for general ideas is the Suppressed Transmission, by Ken Hite (who wrote the Chicago Chapter in Our World). It was a regular column on the Pyramid on-line magazine, and selected essays from the first two years have been collected and published in two volumes by Steve Jackson Games. I highly recommend them.

DFRPG / Re: Any mention of Redcaps in cannon?

In the end, it comes down to how much you (and your group) want to hold to the mythology of the DF setting as designed by JB.

Harry states several times in the books that Faerie inhabits the parts of the Nevernever closest to our reality, and is inhabited by those beings with the strongest ties/interests in our world. I'd say there's evidence that any faerie-like beings from other folklore traditions are actually treated as faeries, with the same weaknesses, based on Harry's comments about the Svartalf smiths,
(click to show/hide)
in Changes. Also, I believe Harry used steel barbed-wire to make the circle he used to summon and bind the Erlking, specifically because it was "cold iron," and thus added another level of symbolic restraint. So far, it seems that only ghosts, gods, angels and demons (and Outsiders) are the only beings from the Nevernever to appear in the Books so far, which do not have Faerie weaknesses.

Having said that, there's no reason why anyone's game must adhere to these conventions.

I posted this a while ago on another thread. Obviously I put this together as an NPC monster, but I did a bit of research so the basic information is there. My work-around for the cold iron thing is to say that their boots are "metal-shod." We know that there are faerie metals, and who's to say some of them don't appear to be iron even though they're actually something else?

REDCAP

HIGH CONCEPT: Gruesome Faerie Killer

SKILLS
Alertness: Average +1
Athletics: Good +4
Deceit: Fair +2
Endurance: Fair +3
Fists: Average +1
Might: Good +3
Stealth: Fair +2
Weapons: Great +4

POWERS
Faerie Item (+2) Woolen Cap; Must be dyed in fresh blood; Tied to the following powers:
    Inhuman Strength (-2)
    Supernatural Speed (-4)
Glamours (-2)
Inhuman Recovery (-2)
Inhuman Toughness (-2)
The Catch (+3) is cold iron and such

STRESS
Physical OOO(OO), Armor 1
    Social OO  Mental OO

NOTES
Redcaps are solitary, goblin-like wildfae, who tend to haunt ruins in borderlands, like Northern England/Southern Scotland, where they prey upon travelers. They carry halberds and long knives, and they wear heavy, metal-shod boots, but they are swift and difficult to elude. The woolen caps, from which they get their name, are dyed in the blood of their victims. Rumor has it that if their bloody headgear ever dries out, they will die. This may or may not be true, but it is certain that they gain some power from their gruesome hats. If one were to snatch the cap from its head, a Redcap would be weakened, though it would still be far from harmless.

TOTAL REFRESH COST: -7

FAERIE ITEM
The Faerie Item power provides a base +1 refresh bonus. A number of powers are tied to the item, in much the same way as an Item of Power. As long as the Faerie Item is in the faerie's possession, it has access to the related powers. If the Item is lost or stolen, the related powers are lost until this Item is recovered.

If there is an action which the faerie must perform on a regular basis to empower the Item, apply an additional +1 refresh bonus.

Powers tied to a Faerie Item are usually not available to anyone but its rightful owner. However, if someone other than the rightful owner is in possession of a Faerie Item, they often gain a measure of control over the faerie owner. If a Faerie Item works in this way, apply an additional +1 refresh bonus.

DFRPG / Re: High Concept trouble
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:00:52 AM »
Keep in mind that, besides the High Concept, you have your Trouble and five other Aspects to work with. Granted, the last three are going to be tied to your Story and your Guest Appearances, but that still gives you three other Aspects which can incorporate parts of your idea.

I'd suggest breaking things down a little. The High Concept should be your character's central motivation/self-image. Other elements can come from your character's Background, Rising Conflict, or even from your Story.

Here's another one;

Stage Combat (Performance): You've studied fencing as part of your training as an actor. In combat, you may use Performance instead of Weapons.

Too broad. You'd need to pick a specific trapping, or (more likely) duplicate Armed Arts from Fists and pick one or two weapons specifically.

Yeah, that occurred to me after I posted it. I was also thinking that since stage combat is primarily meant to simulate weapons combat, it shouldn't really replace weapons entirely. How about;

Stage Combat (Performance): You can use Performance instead of Weapons when performing a maneuver or defensive action with an appropriate weapon.

Or alternatively, it could be designed to allow Performance to compliment Weapons, giving a +1 to that skill.

DFRPG / Re: Ley Lines
« on: June 15, 2010, 05:25:47 AM »
My game is going to be set in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I plan to feature ley lines in the setting. The first thing that came to mind was the San Andreas Fault, which seems like a natural to be connected to an Earth Line. But to make it more interesting, I remembered that the S.A. Fault is part of the tectonic/volcanic system known as the Ring of Fire (how's that for an evocative name) which surrounds the Pacific Ocean.

So, now I'm imagining a network of interwoven Earth and Fire lines which follow the major faults and volcanic chains around the Pacific Basin. Their fluctuating power and interactions mean that their associated Nexuses tend to shift locations (although the more potent, such as volcanoes are relatively stationary), and occasionally bleed into the surrounding landscape as earthquakes. I will note here that, in San Francisco at least, a strong connection between Earth and Fire can easily exist; the Quake of 1906 was followed immediately by the Fire of '06, which burned down most of the City and left thousands homeless.

An opposing system of Water Lines feeding into the Bay along the major rivers and flowing out into the Pacific under the Golden Gate, will cross the Ring of Fire Lines at roughly right angles, and could create some interesting effects where they intersect. I may have Air Lines moving in tandem with Water, though they won't be as strongly connected as Earth and Fire (although the famous S.F. fog comes to mind here). I also imagine that there will be some strong Spirit Lines as well, and as I'm going with an "opposing forces" theme, they will likely be a mix of Light and Dark.

I only remember the term "demon" being used when referring to the White Court's Hunger.

Anyway, it seems to me that the three known Courts can be classified thusly;

White Court: Arguably half-human, with a demon (the Hunger) riding shotgun.
Red Court: Former humans metamorphosed into creatures. The dual nature only comes into play in regard to Red Court Infected. Once they kill, there is a physical change and they're no longer human.
Black Court: They are the Undead, rather than simply re-animated corpses. They are the kind of entities necromancers wish they could create.

As for the Jade Court...

@gaelvin - I don't have a automatic way to link NPCs to faces,
but you can edit the tiddler and put [[name of Face]] in the tiddler
and it will create a link.

So, would I add that edit to the Face Tiddler, or the NPC Tiddler?

It'd be nice to have it work that way, since the Faces are NPC's after all, and having all the NPC write-ups in one place is convenient.

Maybe I just don't know how to do it (which is entirely possible), but is there a way to link the Faces to NPCs?

DFRPG / Re: Question on Vampires
« on: May 29, 2010, 06:52:22 PM »
Here's how I see it breaking down;

As the "most human" of the Vampire Courts, a White could be killed and transformed into a Black. A White's Hunger would probably make it immune (or at least resistant) to a Red's venom and the Red infection, so could not become a Red (or a Pink).

A White Court Virgin, on the other hand, does not yet have the "benefits" of the Hunger, and so no protection from Red Infection. Whether a Red Court Infected White Court Virgin would ultimately become a Red or a White would depend on how it first killed. By blood-feeding? Red Court. Emotional Feeding? White Court. I'd see it kinda like a Changeling's Choice; one or the other. But up to that point there could be some crazy Compels on the opposing Vampire Aspects.
