DFRPG / Making a location feel alive
« on: December 01, 2015, 10:50:34 AM »
Hello fellow roleplayers.

Iīve been playing DFRPG since it first came out. But always as a player.
Now Iīm trying to get my ass in gear and try to GM. I tried GMing once before, but collapsed under my own expectations, not my players mind you. I wanted to be as good as my very experienced GM, and well thatīs not happening over night, and what I tried I think was improv GMing, which didenīt pan out at all, so now Iīll try preperation GMing.
So now Iīve stripped the magic of the FATE system, I have for some reason never got that on the backbone just being able to do it, and so I removed it from the game. It makes sense as well since my group Iīm running for, all are relatively new to RPGs, one of them have a bit of D&D experience a long time ago, another a bit of Call of Cthulhu but nothing much as far as I know.
One of my players wanted a Zombie game and so did I for that matter, so I tried to create it and I think Iīve got some fairly useful. It was supposed to be a one shot, now itīs a short little campaign it feels like.
My current situation for this act/session of the campaign is, the players has reached a supposedly "secure" location, a survivors camp kind of thing. Whoīs running the joint is kind of up in the air right now, Iīve got two candidates the "old one" and the "new one" and they are supposed to help be the deciding factor for what happens now, who gets control. Now earlier Iīve just planned it as Iīll be able to toss different scenes at my players as they progress the story. But now Iīm in one location, and I need them to make decision based on feedback from NPCs, which way should they go, ultimately itīs up to them of course, but itīs one location I need to make feel alive. Enough people on the location to make it feel alive, with different opinions and stuff, but not so many that it will overwhelm both players and me for that matter. Iīve had characters two ways before this. Full PC style NPC sheets, which most of my NPCs consist of, one people who are basicly just one aspect to cover what they are like. Do I need to just make a bunch of aspects to try and bring this place to life? one aspect being one person? or come up with a bunch of "full" NPCs? what do you guys do when you need to make a location feel alive? have you got some web based resources for generating Aspect ideas? have you got some old characters I could "borrow" and alter to suit my need for populating my location? or perhaps like most of the time, Iīll get ideas from talking back and forward with you guys, back and forth conversations is usually a good way normally to spawn ideas. Any idea how many I would need to populate a location? looking forward to your input.

DFRPG / Breaking an promise sworn upon power for a Wizard?
« on: July 26, 2010, 06:06:09 AM »
Hi guys.

How much power would a Wizard lose if he breaks a promise sworn upon his power?
I think I might have messed up one of my characters, either be cause he inherently from me isenīt thinking fast enough or because heīs to controlled by his emotions and not thinking straight at this point in game, which I guess then just is playing him in his correct "frame of mind"
Is there some rule that governs how much a Wizard is weakened if he goes "screw it" and breaks an oath?
Iīll have to check, but Iīve been told that my Wizard is at a stronger level than Harry is in the books, so if I get weakened by a little enough margin that I end at Harryīs level of power I think he might do it. But if heīs weakened too much I think heīs reluctant to  do it, maybe just being more careful about it.

DFRPG / Am I getting myself too much in over my head?
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:03:32 AM »
Hi RP Players:)

I am trying to design af White Court vampire. as my PC.
Heīs a european version (thus I guess with a different name) of one of the White Court vampires of the Raith fammily.

I am reading on aspects and trying to figure out how they work, I am currently reading the chapter and not done. But as far as Iīve understood Aspects can be objects, persons, something to descripe and define the character.

I know they are supposed to have dual meaning, both up and down side, but this for some reason is difficult for me to figure out.

Most of my Aspects are either just descriptive or negative for my char.

One of them I thought of is "He who walks in front" this is intented to be seen in two ways, one, the guy dosenīt mind walking in front in a fight, take fire and protect his "employer" (heīs a vampire for hire, a vampire twist to someone maybe a bit like Kincaid).
The secound I though of was, my game master could, from this aspect say that some wizard or sorcerrer has send "He who walks behind"  after me for vengence. But then I thought, hey White Court is super fast, super strong (if fed ofc) but still human enough that if you kill him in a conventional way he stays down. So will a White Court have any chance at all of running away from "he who walks behind"?

In the group I am in, if Iīve understood it correctly we are a white council wizard, me as a white court vampire, some sort of warewolf, I presume somthing like billy and gorgia warewolf like. And then an undecided that dosenīt know what he wants to be.
But I am thinking I should not count on the help of the wizard to handle "He who walks behind" even though we are "forced" to work together in the game.

Is "He who walks behind" to big a mouthful for a White Court?

Kind Regards

Author Craft / Where to start?
« on: February 01, 2010, 04:11:41 PM »
Hi Butcher fans:)

Okay so I read through the first 20 pages in authors craft and it seems this question has not been asked.
Where to start?
Do you start with a character and try to figure out what this person is about, what he does, where he lives and then what happens to him/her?
Plot idear? what is this about, what is to happen to the character, start middle, end thread?
Do you start figuring out what do I want to tell? morale and what not. I guess itīs the plot but I want to hear the opinon. Is it somewhere intirely different? I am not sure if itīs Plot or Character, but as I said, I guess itīs plot. What do you say?
Often when I write I find my idear originate from another film or book, this i realise after a bit of time so I have startet thinking plot characters and such.
As my Writers group has nearly started, and a deadline is sure to come up and be, in term of writing, soon, I thought I wanted to seek your wisdom on these questions.
This group is to activate and keep our creativity going and is not aiming at all at publicating and release our work to the public.
As such I thought, maybe I should try to write DF fanfic, as far as I know Fanfic is okay by the group. But then again, that I think just means I want to read DF again or read the new changes rather than creating something in the universe it self. For fear of not capturing Harryīs being correctly and makeing it be him. I love the series, itīs the best in a long long time, as such Iīd like to write fiction with Harry on the other hand I am afraid to write something and not be able to perform as Harry, Bob, Murph, Michael or other of our beloved characters. The same goes to some extend with Codex Alera. While I donīt hold it as dear as I does with the DF I still am afraid of trying to capture for instance Kitai or Taviīs brilliant tactics, I donīt think I can get into Kitaiīs unique mind and her attitude.
I mentioned that I can recognize idears from books and movies in my works when I work, this is becourse I am still a beginner i guess, and yes I am a beginner, if i think of an idear and think it is mine and is original I Hate it, I Hate it so much, when I discover it was an idear i picked up, from a book or movie, at a later point and things have developed I step back and see, hey Iīve seen this before in some form or another. This I find horrible when it is my own work and itīs supposed to be original, but if i start my story declaring I am in Fanfiction mode I have no problem being in another universe where it is not originally mine, and I just tweak things with my own plotline.
At this point as I am sure you have figured out, I donīt know what to do, where to start, the only thing i "know" is if my work is to be purely original (not going down the Fanfiction road of either DF or CA) that my genre is to be either Horror or Fantasy not even here I can make up my mind, as some of my idears fit Horror while others does the Fantasy genre. And unfortunately they come in, in a mix, and I only unfortunately seem to get idears if i think about now I want an idear, is there something wrong with me for this? that, if I am allowed to use a writer term, my muse will only visit when called upon.
I hope you can help me folks.
My deadlines in the Writers group is giving me stress and makes me fear I cannot come up with anything original in time, on the other hand if i donīt keep my mind on writing it seems I donīt get anything to write.
Do your muse submit idears to you at random? or like mine only when provoked to do something?
Or am I fooling myself in thinking I have muse, and really I canīt get idears to write at all and should drop this idear?
Hearing about Jimīs road to success and the arrival of DF and the Codex one just have to keep going and never give up, if one want to improve, and also from another writer I have herd something simmilar, I guess this means donīt give up hehe.
Anyway can you help me on my questions?
thanks in advance:D
