DFRPG / Making a location feel alive
« on: December 01, 2015, 10:50:34 AM »
Hello fellow roleplayers.

I´ve been playing DFRPG since it first came out. But always as a player.
Now I´m trying to get my ass in gear and try to GM. I tried GMing once before, but collapsed under my own expectations, not my players mind you. I wanted to be as good as my very experienced GM, and well that´s not happening over night, and what I tried I think was improv GMing, which diden´t pan out at all, so now I´ll try preperation GMing.
So now I´ve stripped the magic of the FATE system, I have for some reason never got that on the backbone just being able to do it, and so I removed it from the game. It makes sense as well since my group I´m running for, all are relatively new to RPGs, one of them have a bit of D&D experience a long time ago, another a bit of Call of Cthulhu but nothing much as far as I know.
One of my players wanted a Zombie game and so did I for that matter, so I tried to create it and I think I´ve got some fairly useful. It was supposed to be a one shot, now it´s a short little campaign it feels like.
My current situation for this act/session of the campaign is, the players has reached a supposedly "secure" location, a survivors camp kind of thing. Who´s running the joint is kind of up in the air right now, I´ve got two candidates the "old one" and the "new one" and they are supposed to help be the deciding factor for what happens now, who gets control. Now earlier I´ve just planned it as I´ll be able to toss different scenes at my players as they progress the story. But now I´m in one location, and I need them to make decision based on feedback from NPCs, which way should they go, ultimately it´s up to them of course, but it´s one location I need to make feel alive. Enough people on the location to make it feel alive, with different opinions and stuff, but not so many that it will overwhelm both players and me for that matter. I´ve had characters two ways before this. Full PC style NPC sheets, which most of my NPCs consist of, one people who are basicly just one aspect to cover what they are like. Do I need to just make a bunch of aspects to try and bring this place to life? one aspect being one person? or come up with a bunch of "full" NPCs? what do you guys do when you need to make a location feel alive? have you got some web based resources for generating Aspect ideas? have you got some old characters I could "borrow" and alter to suit my need for populating my location? or perhaps like most of the time, I´ll get ideas from talking back and forward with you guys, back and forth conversations is usually a good way normally to spawn ideas. Any idea how many I would need to populate a location? looking forward to your input.

DFRPG / Breaking an promise sworn upon power for a Wizard?
« on: July 26, 2010, 06:06:09 AM »
Hi guys.

How much power would a Wizard lose if he breaks a promise sworn upon his power?
I think I might have messed up one of my characters, either be cause he inherently from me isen´t thinking fast enough or because he´s to controlled by his emotions and not thinking straight at this point in game, which I guess then just is playing him in his correct "frame of mind"
Is there some rule that governs how much a Wizard is weakened if he goes "screw it" and breaks an oath?
I´ll have to check, but I´ve been told that my Wizard is at a stronger level than Harry is in the books, so if I get weakened by a little enough margin that I end at Harry´s level of power I think he might do it. But if he´s weakened too much I think he´s reluctant to  do it, maybe just being more careful about it.

DFRPG / Re: 4th Law Question: Did Obi-One Break It?
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:23:17 AM »
Totally a violation of the 4th Law...but even if Obi-Wan existed in the D-verse, it's not like the Wardens could do anything about it...Obi would mop the floor with them.

However, a type of veil that obscures not vision but recognition is certainly viable and legal, I think.  Instead of veiling yourself, you veil their mind.  No rearranging, no invasion, no tweaking.  Cocoon their mind and set the cocoon's filter to suit your needs.  As long as you don't directly rewire or rewrite their brain or mind, or otherwise do anything directly or indirectly invasive, you're not violating the 4th Law.  The Wardens won't care and will lop your head off anyway, but at least you wouldn't have to worry about the spiritual consequences to your soul.  I imagine with Molly's talent for both neuromancy AND veils, she'd be absolutely stellar at such a spell.

I´d say that is incorrect. If you´ve read Changes it would seem likely that the black staff would drop Obi-Wan dead before he could do  anything at all.

Hehe the "Never bargain with a faerie queen" seems like a good one.:) thanks.

I just put it in there, so that my GM could "pool on the fay part of the world" for story line not specifically to be so much in over my head that I could do nothing at all but to be errand boy for Titania or Mab. (according to my story my family does that enough already)

My only point in seeing if a White court could take on "He who walks behind" was to bring in an element for my GM to integrate with the story. But tbh, I thought He who walks behind was a bit much for a vampire and yep you confirmed it:).

One of my other aspects is: "Dammit I should never have accepted that bargain" indicating (i hope if i´ve understood aspects chapter yet) that I´ve made a deal with one of the sidhe and that the creature can still collect a favor of me. So my GM can integrate it if he wants to.

Does it hold up? could that be a real aspect or have I missunderstood or not read far enough yet?

I´ve added them to my website www.asselberghs.dk

And I am linking them to www.dresdenfilesrpg.com

I seem to have done it correctly accross my site, but I presume my host is having caching problem of a sort. Only half of my site shows the banner. I´ll get in touch with them soonest and fix this issue.

Thanks for the awsome graphics:)

DFRPG / Am I getting myself too much in over my head?
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:03:32 AM »
Hi RP Players:)

I am trying to design af White Court vampire. as my PC.
He´s a european version (thus I guess with a different name) of one of the White Court vampires of the Raith fammily.

I am reading on aspects and trying to figure out how they work, I am currently reading the chapter and not done. But as far as I´ve understood Aspects can be objects, persons, something to descripe and define the character.

I know they are supposed to have dual meaning, both up and down side, but this for some reason is difficult for me to figure out.

Most of my Aspects are either just descriptive or negative for my char.

One of them I thought of is "He who walks in front" this is intented to be seen in two ways, one, the guy dosen´t mind walking in front in a fight, take fire and protect his "employer" (he´s a vampire for hire, a vampire twist to someone maybe a bit like Kincaid).
The secound I though of was, my game master could, from this aspect say that some wizard or sorcerrer has send "He who walks behind"  after me for vengence. But then I thought, hey White Court is super fast, super strong (if fed ofc) but still human enough that if you kill him in a conventional way he stays down. So will a White Court have any chance at all of running away from "he who walks behind"?

In the group I am in, if I´ve understood it correctly we are a white council wizard, me as a white court vampire, some sort of warewolf, I presume somthing like billy and gorgia warewolf like. And then an undecided that dosen´t know what he wants to be.
But I am thinking I should not count on the help of the wizard to handle "He who walks behind" even though we are "forced" to work together in the game.

Is "He who walks behind" to big a mouthful for a White Court?

Kind Regards

Thanks Rotrich:)
I´ve got a question again for you (all of you), as I have decided to go with a horror idear which I think I can make spur into something good, when I sit and think about evolving it I can do it aparently but it dosen´t come out of the blue.
Anyway my question is setting or rather location.
Do I need to use cities, areas i know good and well that be here in Denmark. Or is it acceptable to go, "I have writers freedom and wants to be in NY, in the US, even though i´ve only been there once and if an american read this he can shoot bullet holes in this story with an atomic bomb if he wants".

Thanks Kali:) that was encouring, I think I´ll pick up something I felt i got from another story and pick it up again, tweak it, make it my own. I hope I can find it or pick it out of my mind again and continue something that last time around never got started:)
