How about sponsored magic?  Like, the winter knight killing someone with winter ice?

And yet that's how it's written.
Houserule as you will.
Since it's defining the circumstances under which they're effective, rather than ineffective, the catch stunt gets used whenever your abilities actually work.

@Slife: Been a while since I read The Call Of Cthulhu, but I don't think that he took any Consequences from the boat's impact.
The main characters managed to escape while he was incapacitated.  I'd go far as to say he was Taken Out.

The Catch (unknown) [+0]
The Catch should be steamships.

2. Drag the wizard onto a moving airplane, dare him to try his spellcasting.

Sure thing.  I'm a pretty good spellcaster, and I think I can pull together a levitation spell

On the fly.

YEAAAAAH.

More seriously, keep data offsite and encrypted.  Do some research on what the Archive's limits are, and try to keep the nosy little girl out of your business.  Set up an area where the equivalent points in the nevernever are nasty business for just about everyone - or, ideally, are buried deep in the ground or similarly obstructed.

Riddle the place with circles, which'll hopefully make it harder to divine even if they get past the outside.

As you note, Bob doesn't cast a single spell.  So while he knows a lot in the "high Lore" sense, does he know a lot in the "make a bigger boom" sense?

I dunno.  There's nothing wrong with changing it so Focused Practioners can use Refinements differently/take more of them, if you want.  I was just trying to point out that it's not nonsensical from a logic standpoint.  Earlier a ballerina dancer was used as an example.  Suppose you had one dancer who never practiced anything but Swan Lake her entire life, dancing it every day and night.  Then there's a ballerina dancer who has a broad range of routines and switches between them regularly.

Is the first dancer going to be better at performing Swan Lake?  Not necessarily.  The second dancer has learned things that the first dancer never could, never will, and he'll bring them into his performance.

You can take focus items from Refinement. The idea is that you aren't formally trained or you don't have the strength to specialize, otherwise you'd be there already.
But isn't Mort better than Harry at his particular ectomancy schtick?

Or if your players wants to do it in one: "If I were to ask you the one question to which you don't know the answer, what would your answer be?"
"This one"
alternatively
"Incorrect"

Alternatively, maybe the eight-ball is the eyeball of some sort of cosmic horror living on the moon.

The main problem is not jumping up, but landing, how would you go about that? Because calculating the exact amount of wind needed soften your fall is pretty hard, if not almost impossible.
Just use exactly the amount you took off with.  That'll be a little bit too much, but close enough.

I'd say enchanted item for anything long-term.  You can justify it by saying that keeping up the spell would require too much attention to last for long - you can't go on autopilot like you can while driving or walking.

I don't think Harry has lawbreaker for necromancy in the rpg

Swarm of Nasties (-3): Somehow, one body just isn't enough.  Whether you're turning into a swarm of bats and flying off into the night, or a pile of venomous leeches, somebody's going to get freaked out.  Requires previous shapeshifting ability.

When turned into a swarm, gain
Physical immunity (catch is area attacks + normal weaknesses)
Demonic Copilot (either your subconscious desires or actual demons)
*Everything is Big (as everything is small, but reverse the penalties and bonuses.

In exchanged, lose all ranged attacking potential, and the ability to block.

Everyone knows that the ratio of working hardware to nonworking hardware is constant.  So you just have to have some sacrificals and a sympathy spell set up.
