The WoJ compilation gets the resources it needs, as far as I'm concerned. I mean, heck, that's the point. :)

I've re-enabled search (though you can't do more than one search per minute, per user), experimentally. It'll get disabled again if I start to see performance problems.

it's proally only significant to me at this moment because the search engine is down.

Before I can reactivate that (*if* I can reactivate that), I have to rebuild the search index. It's a very, VERY slow process (I've been running it when I can over the last couple days -- it's at 13% done).

by the way, the boards do seem much more responsive now.

Yeah, I think they are. We went from a 4GB RAM server to a 8GB RAM server (I think) as a part of this move, and I think it's made things zippier. Then again, maybe my tune will change once the search is reactivated.

If it's a simple thing, could you add a "topics started" link in the profile kinda like the "Show Posts"?
I don't know how to do that. If there's a plug-and-play module for SMF 2.0 that does it, great! Tho I'd worry about impact on database in terms of query time.

Not sure what your setup is for the server, Is it a dedicated windows box?  If so you might need to configure SMTP . Is port 25 open or blocked at the firewall?

Oh gods, no, not a windows box. CentOS (linux). It wasn't an SMTP thing, it was a SELinux security configuration thing.

I haven't been getting notification emails for new posts in threads, but it could be tied in with the other email issue.  I should know relatively soon if it's working again, now you've fixed the other issue.

Absolutely all email issues were, I believe, affected by the one, single problem that the webserver wasn't allowed to send emails.

I've noticed that going to "replies to your posts" puts me at the beginning of each thread, rather than the message immediately after my most recent post within the thread.  Is that fixable?  Please? (Whenever you have time.)

I'm not sure I know how to begin to fix that, but is it a new technical issue that's occurred just recently, after the downtime?

Okay, that message has been split out and tossed into the WOJ board. Probably not as gracefully or correctly as Priscilla, but that should at least prevent losing it to deletion. :)

I suspect that reporting to a mod is having a similar issue.  I had a post in the "Story of Us" forum that was "pending approval most of the day yesterday, and I had "reported" it in an attempt to expedite that.  By the end of the day I gave up, re-posted it without the link (to another topic in the forums) then edited it in.  A bypass to the "approval" process I found a while ago.

Additionally, yesterday I reported a post by Jim that turns 1 year old today, and it hasn't been transferred yet, which Prisc has done rather quickly for me in the past.

Edit:  edited in the link to Jim's post

Yep, absolutely all email actions by the webserver were blocked. I just unblocked them. I'll check on the aging post. :)

Okay, I'm trying to collect known issues after the downtime.

Right now the main one I can see is that I'm not getting emailed notification of replies (I'd bet the same problem exists for PMs for folks who've opted to have those emailed to them). I think this is an issue with the configuration of mail on the new server rather than the forum software itself, but we'll see.

Anything else?

Please limit the chatter; I only want to see replies reporting genuine technical issues with the forum.

Are there any thoughts on letting someone experienced in running websites to be allowed to help out?

There's been a bunch of offers by us rabid fans, some that even make great games that are really cool and dresden fantastic. I think it would take a lot off of your plate when it comes to running the site.

99% of the time there's not much to it. :) Most of the places I need help involve actual in-forum-software administration and moderation, and we've got a great crew working on that!

Much appreciation must go to Mrs. Iago, who figured out the weird-ass security issue that was preventing me from bringing up the site on the new system. :)

So... we're back. Hopefully there's only been a couple days' worth of posts lost at most.

Things are still a little shaky -- not everything that was in place is back in place -- but we are on a new server (with healthy, RAID-ed disks and twice the memory), with better direct control over our name service and server functions. It's a good start.

I can't predict whether or not something serious will crop up that'll need a "restart" (i.e., another database roll-back) in the interim. In the short term, I've disabled the search function (sorry about that) and may turn off other features in order to manage server load as tightly as possible. I've also got to get certain backup procedures back in place (in addition to the new ones) in order to make sure we're ship shape in case another debacle hits us.

But the good news -- beyond forum upness -- is that we're back, and we're no longer saddled with Midphase, our former service provider. Now we're with the lean, mean operation of M5 Hosting, and I can already tell I'm likely to be happier with them.

So, go gentle, folks. But go!

(And remember, buying stuff from the jim-butcher.com store kicks back sales referral fees to me that helps pay for the site.)
