to further clarify, they are differentiating between skill and power.  The more skill u have in something, the more flexiblity u have in the way the effect resolves.  The more skill, the more potential shifts u can use to modify the effect, the duration of the effect, or the time in which it takes to accomplish the result.

With using stunts, u can have less skill but be more powerful in what your magic can do..  Harry is an excellent example of someone who has lots of stunts, and stunts which have powerful effects, but he doesnt have a lot of corresponding skill, because his results are not as reliable as he would like.

This system provides a very nice flexible system for magical progression in learning and skill that does not automatically translate into more powerful.  It reflects a real world availibility that i really enjoy..

the way i see that they might be doing the magic effects in this.. is not necessarily based on the pyramid system.

It looks like they are leaning to stunts.. and if you look at the way they are doing stunts in SotC the more powerful a stunt is, it has specific requirements before they can be taken.  so the more powerful spells would require more pre requisites...

until i actual see the spell and magic system however.. i can only speculate based on what they have discussed here

the way i explained the pyramid to my players was as follows...

in order for a pyramid to be legitimate, you have to have at least one more skill in a supporting level to be balanced.. so if you wanted 1 level three skill you need 2 level two skills.. and in order to have 2 level 2 skills you needed 3 level 1...

so if you waanted another level 2 skill.. you must first gain another level 1 skill...   what this really means is that you may never have the same number of skills as there are in the supporting level..

is this a good explanation??

I guess i will wait until i get accepted into the alpha or beta testing than... :P  i can see alot of different ways that powers can be respresented... and i am curious than about which dynamics you will use.. havent seeen a work up yet online of 3.0... so i will look more.. and i like the core concept of SotC.  Curious as well how u will deal with advancement.. because SotC is a fairly static in skill advancement, it seems to suggests buy more stunts, and more aspects, and fate points... but i am very excited ... and looking forward to testing the ideas... i luv gaming..

thanks for the opportunity even to talk about it in these forums..

I have now read Fate and Spirit of the Century

I couldnt help but notice that there was no use of the category of Extras in SotC ... If I am not mistaken.. extras are skill like characteristicss which are always on... i can think of a great many uses for this .. it would account for so many of the mystical abilities ...

I cant also help but note.. that u could have seperate skill pyramids for the magical abilities... magic players split their skills.. which would make them less effective in some ways in mundane skills.. but would them access to a range of skills that mundanes would not have access to..

I would definitely include any extras into this pyramid... because to me this would represent honing natural talents or learned ones.. Any of the potential Spheres of magic or mystical  ability to be tied to skills... and the more powerful versions or spells being stunts for these skills..

extras could account for potions... weapons... items... and whole range of things... it would make your magical system flexible.. but structured..

have i fallen off the deep end..

I have a lot of ideas about this.. but without seeing a structure that u are attempting to use.. i cant make any comments.. i can only share what i have done myself..

if you want.. i can work up some things .. and present them to see what u think...

btw.. are vampires.. werewolves.. fae... are they going to be open to player characters?? or are they going to be limited to mainly npcs?

by the way the use of extras would allow for the minor mystics that are all over the dresdenverse...  there are other options as well..

such as allowing the mundanes or others to purchase mystical abilities with an appropriate aspect..   and especially for those who have only one ability... what would seem to make sense is allowing them to take multiple stunts .. and treat them like its own pyramid.

so lets say some one has ectomancy...

ectomancy would be the aspect..
so the extra would be the skill  read object
the first stunt might be ... when the object is held, u get a visual image of the last person who touched it

now.. before you could buy a more powerful version of this stunt, you must diversify slightly, such as possible,
stunt.  u get an emotional impression of the last person who touched it..

so u have to have 2 stunts in read object before you could develop one more powerful... and different..

thus allowing for progression.. but forcing a streamlined and controlled growth..

what do you think..

personally i like the idea of a pyramid system for advancement of magical skills... because so far as i have seen most of the competant wizards that have been around have knowledge of other magical areas, but they dont necessarily have enormous skill in them...  so it prevents the over balanced character who wants to do nothing but specialize.

and this system provides well for a apprenticeship approach where you buy aspects initially in the mentor and magical skills.. and as u progress as a mage you switch out aspects from the teacher to the student representing his increase in skills and his relying less on his master and more on himself.

this can also be represented by switching out of specialized items given to the student to aid in his learning and replacing them with the requisite skill..  no power is sacrificed in the character.. but it is merely relocated..

there is tremendous potential everywhere you look..

I am impressed.  I have played so many different game systems and i have not seen one like the one represented in the Fate application.  Its simplicity in structure of how a character evolves in wonderful.. and it emphasizes character acting by its very nature.  By differentiating between aspects for character definition and aspects for personality and flavor and giving flexibility to how they impact teh genre leaves a lot of flexibility to the gamesmaster...

I am looking forward to hopefully being selected for games testing... i just applied and have spent the evening learning the basics of fate... It has been a long time since I have found a system so logically crafted..

well done..

looking forward to its release.. and perhaps if i made it into testing..helping with fleshing out the system.. and backgrounds  :P

Codex Alera Spoilers / Re: Codex Alera Timeline
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:02:59 PM »
my guess in that regard.. is that the first half of the book is going to be helping ot contain the Canim.. with the help of the Marat... and an eventual truce .. as u suggested.. and that the legion will be drawn off to the north... i dont think the truce will occur unless the Canim reveal why they left their homeland....  there is plenty of space for them near this area ... so it would be a nice settlement... and an end to the threat... remember.. the Canim were fostered to hate the alerans.. considering them a plague... the question is why.. and how this came about..

a potential interesting thought...

Reading this thread.. i have to respond about the speculation to Tavi's age...

Isana has never not claimed that Tavi was not born during the time near First Calderon.  She has stated many times that he is the son her sister... conceived when both she and her sister served their time with the legions.  Her sister died during that time.. so there was no evidence to disprove that she was not the mother.. and this is the theory that she has held on to since his birth.. its what she told tavi.. its what she told bernard... its what she has told anyone who has asked about Tavi's birth.

We know from CF that Isana later decided to make Tavi look younger... and smaller for his age so that no one would think he could have been born during this time... why she ended up doing this i dont know.. because she had already affirmed who his mother was.. and it was in the records when his alleged mother was seriving her time in the legion... I dont think she ever lied aboout his age.. the only lie was in making him look younger.. and using her furies to suppress his growth and his fury faculties.

Since he has been away from her influence and those of her furies.... and those around calderon.  His biological clock started working correctly, and his fury clock began as it should have if it hadnt been surppressed at all..

There are two points i would now like to make...

One... did isana use any water crafting to alter Tavi's appearance so he would look less like the princeps... because if she did... that too is starting to wear off... but here is the more interesting one..

We know that Isana said she has one fury.. Rill.. but when she was crafting Tavi's potential into suppression, she said that Furies... plural ... around the steadholt would do it for her with but little thought on her part... why were there extra furies helping... we know that the furies in the steadholts are more violent and independant... stronger.... so why would these other furies be willing to help... unless perhaps they were drawn to Tavi's potential... and since they knew it was at this time in his best interest.... they helped...
because they recognized his bloodline...

this would also explain some of the things that tavi has been able to do... these instincts.. or senses.. or feats of strength or stamina or insight that a furyless person should not be able to do... he was not directing the furies.. but rather the furies were in some way attempting to help him...  this perhaps would explain a lot of the interesting things which have happened around Tavi..

only know.. at the end of this last book.. he is no consciously aware of these furies... and is beginning to gain the ability to commune.. command or compel them...

Author Craft / My Opening... please comment
« on: December 13, 2006, 02:05:20 AM »
I finally did it.... I wrote an opening to the book i want.. and it might work...

could i get some comments... please....

Death is  only a beginning.  Those were the words that Bevon had said to him before he had gone to his eventual death against his brother Bualla. With his passing, the War of Ascension had been brought to a close.  And though Bualla had so callously taken his brother's life more than three millenia ago, Caleb was still no closer to understanding what Bevon had meant by those words.

Shaking those thoughts from his mind, Caleb reigned in his horse.  He was on a hill just beyond the eastern edge of Caravan's Rest.  Sitting still for a moment, he observed the small town that was the last outpost for caravans leaving the Dutchies to go toward the Counties to the north.

Caleb looked thoughtfully toward the small town and wondered. Was anyone aware that this city  would soon be changed forever?  Could anyone feel the strands of the Weave drawing closer to their lives?

In his unnaturally long life,  Caleb had met few who could sense warp and the weft of the tapestry.  Most were happily oblivious to the greater currents and events that occasionally surfaced to guide the lives of men, but he was not such a one.  Not only could he see these currents, but he could feel them, call them to himself, and impose his will upon them altering the flow of everything around him.  It was a gift that had earned him many names over the years: Thread-Bearer, the Gray Wanderer, Caleb the Undying, but the one that best described him, the one that he hated more than any other was The Voice of the Lady.  And it was not that he hated the Lady, or what She bade him do, but that he hated the results.

You see, there were forces in the world that most could not see, and if they could, they would wish every day of their lives for their ignorance to return.  When these forces set their will upon this world, She would intervene.  For those who walked upon this world were special to the Lady, and though She would not directly interfere, She would put Her will upon those who could.  She would lift the veil and let them see, and the rest was their decision, and though She would force their eyes to be open, that was as far as She would go, after that all was left upon them.

From deep within, Caleb knew that the veils were soon to be parted.  He could feel it for his gift was stirring within him, and Her Voice was growing in his mind.  Yes, tonight was the night, and this was the place.

Caleb shook the reigns and his horse continued forward. As his mount sauntered toward the city, a tower could be seen off in the distance.  And as the sun dipped below the horizon, the edifice was not bathed in the orange hue of the setting sun, but rather in was enveloped in deep azure. No, there was no mistaking this. Blue was the color of the Lady.  She had set the Place. Now all he had to do was await the Time.

Thanksa!!!!!!!!

As I said in the previous blog... I am an aspiring writer... but i have done a great deal of fantasy rpg.. and sci fi rpg..

I have many ideas that i want to convert into books eventually.

One is an alternate reality time line where the civil war was not about blacks being slaves.. but about the emancipation of the Demons who were being used as slaves.. and what h appened when Lincoln attempted to free the demons..

Another .. demon oriented.. is the world is invaded by demons from 7 gates... about how our world changes.. how we might fight them... and how they were defeated in the past..

but the one i am currently working on .. is an epic saga..

an evil theocracy is trying to conquer the last group of nations that have escaped its grasp.  5 great heroes are bound to save the young man who is destined become an emperor and begin a war to hopefully overthrough the theocracy for good.  but they soon discover that there is more than just the theocracy at work.. a deeper darker threat eventually emerges and challenges their understanding of the world they know.. and they begin to see that their world has become the last stand for an evil which refuses to forgo its existence
