There ares no real bookstores close to where I live. Even Borders is up in Atlantic City, about an hour's drive from Cape May. Closest B & N is about three hours away. So I'll miss Borders.

We have something called Atlantoc Books here, who specialize in selling remaindered books - admittedly, cut rate prices, but few new books as they come out. Mostly NYT best sellers (yeah, that means hopefully GS after it's been out a week or so.) me, I have eBook version on preorder anyway. What Atlantic gets in though is very hit or miss. It doesn't have the same friendly atmosphere the Borders in Mays Landing has, either.

And for those of you with B & N ... According to Katherine Raush's newest blog, B & N stores have been told by corporate HQ to eliminate a bunch of their shelf spacemfor books and replace it with toys, gift items, etc. So the number of books they can have on hand is going to decrease dramatically.... *sigh* d*****d bean counters. Most people go to book stores for books, not toys or gift items...

Thanks. I'm using them as "screensavers" on my Sony eReader...neat! Would probably work even better on a Color Nook or one of the tablet computers - hmm, maybe I can download one to my smart phone and use it as the wallpaper on it...hmmm

DFRPG / Re: A Non-Evil Denarian?
« on: April 05, 2011, 04:43:16 PM »
IIRC, there are cases where the Fallen have just bulled ahead and taken over the Denarian (the host who picked up their coin) and thus, the human who once occupied that body has no say whatsoever in the actions taken after he/she has been subjugated. Therefore, just because the human host WANTS to not be evil, or has plans to use the Fallen's powers for good, doesn't mean that's what is going to happen once they accept becoming a host.

Heh. Even if you don't play, or play only sporadically, some of the conversations in the threads here are fascinating.

And as someone who doesn't game very often, I've got to say that I'm seriously impressed by the DFRPG. It has me itching to start playing again. I used to GM D&D games, and ended up twisting rules around all over the place to get what I considered good games going. Luckily the group I played with at the time (Ummm... when I started out we still were working with the three paperbound books that used 8 1/2 x 11 paper folded in half - the "Basic D&D game - yep, the very first books. Sigh. Too bad I gave them away years ago; I could sell them for a fair amount on the bay or somewhere now as they're considered highly collectible, from what I hear.) Also played and GM'ed a few Traveller games - again, had to bend the rules like crazy to come up with decent games. For one thing, the size of the computers (well, the square yardage / tonnage for memory, etc.) was already out of date by the time the rules books hit the shelves. But after a while, the growing # of rules sorta made me feel like they were putting players and GMs into straigh jackets. So I eventually ended up losing interest in RPGs and got into other things. So saying I'm thinking of getting back into gaming says something - like this game is truly awesome. I really like the idea of a game where the main focus is on generating a great story, rather than the characters being in it for game-oriented loot, money, and power...

Thanks to Fred and company, they've really made a fantastic game here!

Found BOTH books at Borders today! I had held off buying them until now because of cost - but today I saw exactly how big and how thick those books are, and decided the prices for them are well worth it!  But if you're like me and don't have a gaming store near you, and you have a Borders, check the gaming book section, and you may be pleasantly surprised...Whoot!

"Supernatural" recently had an episode with fae and other supernatural beasties making crop circles, abducting and 'probing' humans, etc. Quite a lot of fun - especially when Dean gets a good glimpse of the Tinkerbell-sized 'fairy' and realizes she's got boobs and all... just before he smacks her into a microwave and blows her up. Whee!

DF Comic Books / Re: Style of Comics You Read
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:32:22 PM »
Started reading comics (basically DC and Marvel - never cared for Archie & Co.) back in the early 1970s (when I got hooked on the X-Men, not only were the #s in double digits, but that was before Wolverine showed up and they had just gotten the costumes / uniforms that replaced those sucky blue/yellow jumpsuits they started out with...) Basically dropped out of reading comics regularly in the late 1980s for two main reasons - 1) plotlines started repeating all over the place, and 2) I was out in the real world, security police officer in the USAF, and seeing far too much real world dark stuff. At that point in time the 'anti-mutant' doom-and-gloom period was starting to take hold in comics. I didn't mind a LITTLE bit of doom-and-gloom, but there was a while when they almost all gloried in wallowing in it. Shortly thereafter found anime and manga (this was before commerical translations were readily available.) Still read a few of the manga, particularly "Five Star Stories" and "Bio Booster Armor Guyver," as well as "K-ON!!" Some of my favorites, like "RG Veda" and "Karula-Mau!" seem to have stopped publishing, sigh. In US comics, mostly read adaptions (Dresden Files, Serenity, Buffy/Angel, some Star Wars, some Star Trek) but look for decent artwork as well as good adaptions/scripts. If the artwork is horrible, I won't pick up more than an issue or two... and for the most part, I prefer graphic novels rather than picking up individual issues. Easier to find/order the graphic novels, too.

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Policy Changes: How do you feel?

I have no problems with the changes, although I too miss some of the stuff in TT. Oh well, there's still lots and lots of other parts of this site to visit and read through pages and pages of posts. And I have seen several forums go down in flame wars because the moderation wasn't consistent, or even was nonexistent. The only other board I now visit regularly is just as heavily modded as this one is, and truthfully, I prefer it that way. There were a few boards I really enjoyed and it wasn't fun watching the crash landings.  ;D

In the reorganization (I'm assuming) a bunch of threads about the books seem to have ended up in the DF Comic book sub forum...

Love the illo! You've got some talent there, girl.

I am not much into playing RPG any more, but I fully intend to get both DF RPG books just for the Dresdenverse info and all the neat artwork...  ;D

DF TV Series / Re: POLL: End Game Opinion of the Series
« on: January 24, 2010, 04:22:04 PM »
I enjoy(ed) both the show AND the books. Yep, there are differences, but not really major ones, IMO. Heh. I can name a number of TV series (and movies) that should have been labeled "Inspired by" the books they were based on, as there were so many differences that if some of the characters hadn't had the same names as those in the books, a lot of people never would have realized there was a connection. Then there are others where the producers, etc. only took aspects of the books and concentrated on them when they made their films, not only completely changing the focus of the story but in most cases destroying some decent books. (The "Starship Troopers" movies come to mind, on a whole bunch of levels.) So, yeah, the TV series wasn't exactly like the books - but I expected that. And they were a lot truer to the original material than I expected.
