DFRPG / Any mention of Redcaps in cannon?
« on: June 30, 2010, 07:58:54 AM »
So my group is finally getting to a Dresden files game. During an information session where we discussed character ideas and the world in general all four of my fleshed out character ideas where made impossible or useless to play by what my group is playing. What brings me here is that as a replacement idea I've come up with what I think is an interesting take on the Redcaps. For the life of me I cannot remember if they've ever been mentioned in the books or short stories. So I'm looking for someone to either show me where they are mentioned or enough people to tell me I'm in the clear. Thanks in advance for your help.

For anyone who is interested the idea I had was that being a Redcap was a job with supernatural perks like the Valkyrie, mortals who are imbued with bit of power to do the work. I picture them as being essentially muscle for hire, the blue collar killer of the NeverNever. The template I am working on is Inhuman strength and toughness(cold iron) and wizards constitution as base abilities, with two items of power: iron shod boots that grant supernatural speed, and a sling that shoots elf shot(breath weapon). Any thoughts on the template are also appreciated.

DFRPG / Getting the PDFs on my iPad
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:05:02 AM »
Ok I will preface this by saying I have preordered the books and the PDFs I'm trying to acquire are mine legally, I'm not trying to rip anyone off by doing this.

When I preordered the books I was using my family's ten years plus pc which i despise with a fiery passion. Now that I have replaced my broken laptop with my sleek and shiny iPad I have come across a problem. I have the PDFs, I have an iPad, the problem is getting the two things to meet, shake hands, and hit Mac's for a beer. I've tried all the free PDF reader apps to no avail and figured I would try here before paying money for something that won't work. I seem to recall someone here posting about that they had them on their iPad but that may just be my mind playing tricks on me.

Thanks in advance for your help and here's hoping it isn't a futile task I am searching for.

DFRPG / Describe your Defensive Rote
« on: April 18, 2010, 03:08:27 AM »
So one of the fun things i've found fascinating about the books is how the different practitioners defend themselves, from Harry's Kinetic wall, to Elaine's hyperawareness, to Carlos' Disolving field. So tell me those who are playing or planning practitioners(should get bonus points for Aliteration) how do you defend yourself?

The practitioner I am planning is an ex-necromancer sorcerer. Trying to move away from black magic he relies on his fallback "safe" magic of Earth. His defensive shield layers electromagnetic and gravitational energy both directed down and slightly away so most things that hit the field just thud into the ground at his feet. The visual effect is that of a slow "light waterfall" as the visual radiation is pulled towards the ground. His defensive focus is a heavy wrought iron and bronze ring carved with runes on his left middle finger.

DFRPG / Local practioner seeks magical Sponsor for Fun and Profit
« on: April 15, 2010, 09:32:19 PM »
Ok so I find myself in a dilema. I love the concept of the faerie knights and think the fully statted up -8 refresh version (sponsored magic, marked, item of power) would be ridiculously fun to play.

My problem is that my GM doesn't like to deviate from cannon of established works rpgs so most likely in his campaign the two knight slots are taken and there are no squires. So I have been trying to catalog other sponsors that would allow for a similar build. So far I have..

Monoc Corporation: Not sure if I could be sponsored without being a nordic looking female but it would be fun to receive internal memos about my debt from my "employer" and have board room meetings as compels.

Erlking: Probably closest to the Sidhe Knight in general but it would need some clearer definition of the magic and what kind of item of power he would give.

Schiller Park: Local park that I recently discovered was built over an honest to goodness ancient burial ground. Has been used as a meeting place in every World of Darkness game I have played so it would have the added benefit of messing with my fellow player who usually runs those games

So that is what I have so far, thoughts, ideas?

DFRPG / Sponsored Magic- a few questions
« on: April 13, 2010, 01:16:43 AM »
Ok, so the more I read up on it the more I become enamoured with Sponsored magic but I do have a few questions

1) Which sponsored magics can be taken without the backbone of mortal magic? Seelie and Unseelie have both been used in the books as a sole source of magic(re: the Knights). Kemmlerian necromancy obvious can't but what of the others? I can see the Places of Power source applying (do ritual X in location Y to gain access to magics Z) but from the books Soulfire and Hellfire seem mainly as supplemental, enhancing the existing Evocation, Channeling, Thumaturgy or Ritual abilities inherent in the character. Is that a fair run down? Or can their be characters who only weild Hellfire?

2) Focus Items. Can for example someone who has only Seelie Magic take the refinement ability to get focus items relating to it?
