DF Reference Collection / Re: Questions Specifically for Jim, Part 3
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:44:43 PM »
Actually i think soulfire is completely different from magic. It feeds into to magic rather than the other way around. I bet the angels don't use magic, because remember when michael told harry that magic was evil/unholy

Bob describes soulfire this way:

Quote from: Small Favor, Ch. 45
“So what you’re saying is that this hand construct was made out of my soul,” I said.

“Your soul and your magic fused together, yeah,” Bob said. “Your soul converted into energy. Soulfire. In this case, the spirit energy drawn from your aura right around your right hand, because it fit the construct so well, it being a big version of your right hand and all. Your standard force-projection spell formed around the matrix of soulfire, and what had been an instantaneous exertion of force became a long-term entity capable of manipulation and exertion to the same degree. Not really more powerful than just the force spell, as much as it was more than simply the force spell.”

There are two different interpretations of this, as far as I can see. The first is that soulfire is made directly from the energy of the soul, and then the magic forms around it. And second, that soulfire is itself the combination of magic and soul energy, so that any spell performed with soulfire can essentially be called a soulfire spell, rather than a magic spell laced with soulfire.

The first description fits with the last part of Bob's description, but not as much with the beginning. The second description fits the beginning what Bob says, but seems harder to understand when combined with the last half of his description.

In my opinion, the way Bob begins his description seems simplest and most likely to be what he meant-- soulfire is "your soul and your magic fused together." When he says later that the force-projection spell formed around a matrix of soulfire, it sounds to me like he's saying that the spell itself took shape around the matrix of soulfire, not that the magic alone took shape around the soulfire. Which seems like it would mean that when you use soulfire, you kind of use the soulfire in place of magic, since the soulfire already has magic fused into it. Whereas normally you would use magic to cast a spell, with soulfire, you fuse soul energy and magic together to create soulfire, then use the soulfire to cast the spell.

At least, that's what it sounds like to me. I could be wrong.

hmm, but if thats the case wouldnt he still have access to soulfire?

Yeah, I've wondered about this myself. If angels can use soulfire, and angels are nothing but soul-- which, according to Bob, is the case-- then angels can use magic, since soulfire is a mixture of a soul's energy and magic. If Harry is a soul, and if his soul is structurally similar to an angel's soul, then it seems like he should also be capable of using magic, at least potentially. Maybe the problem in Ghost Story is less that he can't use it and more that using magic as a soul is different from using it as a living mortal, and he just doesn't know how to do it. Or maybe it's as simple as Harry not believing that he can use magic while he's a soul, which could effectively make him unable to do so.

Oh true enough! I usually use HJSplit to cut a video file into pieces and then upload the pieces to my Megaupload or Mediafire account for downloading. If folks are interested in downloading and keeping their own copy, I could make that available as well. I just figured I'd also put it on YouTube for folks who just want to watch it as a streaming video.

I only suggested it in case it would be less work for you, no need to do both. :) And thanks again for all this.

You are all very welcome. ^_^

I'm working on the other clip, but it's much bigger (55 minutes long and 3 GB size) and I need to cut it to fit on YouTube, so it might take me a while. But I'll post it up once it's done and let you guys know.  ;D

If you don't want to bother with editing, you could just re-encode to x264 or XviD or something and upload it to a filesharing site like Rapidshare or Hotfile or Mediafire. Heck, if you don't mind uploading a file that big, you could just split the clip with WinRAR and upload the current version. :)  Using a filesharing site would limit the number of potential viewers a bit, but it would probably require less effort on your part.

And much, much thanks to you for sharing these video files, sir or madam. You are a fine example of a human person.

And that makes it less creepy?

Heh, I think what makes it creepy is not so much that the P.I. was doing this, but that he says the guy he was following never noticed he was being followed. Which makes one wonder if something like that has ever happened to them, and they never realized it either. It kind of brings these elements of mysteries and detective novels a little closer to us perceiving them realistically, I guess.

I'm pretty sure he's wyldfae...

Yeah, I'm almost certain we've been told that's the case, too. Is it possible that he's both wyldfae and the Summer King? Or a Summer King?

I, too, request more Block.

Also, do you think Jim might be amenable to reading a chapter or two from one of the books aloud for the podcast sometime, like he did with "A Taste of Turn Coat"? Maybe the first few chapters of Small Favor, or something? I ask, because someone mentioned a while back that hearing Jim read Bob's dialogue brings a new level to the talking skull, and ever since then I've been wishing I could find a recording of it somewhere.

I love the new Chat thing. I have to say, though, I bet it's going to put a massive dent in postings. I think conversations are usually preferable to notes, for most people.

Of course, this might only kill threads like Weird, where people aren't really talking about any specific topic to begin with. And since Weird is like some terrifying, forum-eating monster, I suppose that could be a good thing. Was that the idea behind Chat in the first place?

If they had a huge cool fortress and didn't move into it on a scale of centuries, I'd be interested to know the reasons, because I'd presume there'd have to be reasons of some sort.

It's not hard for me to imagine the White Council being slow to inhabit a new headquarters. The older members have most of the political clout in the Council, and in general they are more conservative. Why move to some big, snazzy new headquarters just because it's there? Especially when their pre-Edinburough HQ presumably already had lots of protective wards and established routes through the Nevernever, and was the place everyone was used to?

Given a couple of centuries for the younger members to gain control of the Council, though, and they would eventually see that a move was for the best.

It seems like the most troubling assumption is that Merlin was still around and acting as the Merlin when the White Council HQ moved to Edinburough. That doesn't have to be true. Merlin could have left ownership of the area to the White Council, and they could have decided to move there centuries later. The Council seems kind of slow to change, and moving the HQ from wherever it was(Rome, maybe?) to Edinburough would be a pretty big one. It might have taken a couple of centuries for them to decide do relocate.

And if that assumption is taken out of the picture, then Merlin's timeline could hang somewhere within 200 years of 1000 AD without clashing with wizard lifespans.

1) What was Harry's hand stabbed with in Summer Knight, and who did the stabbing?

2) What was the name of the priest Cassius impersonated on Death Masks?

3) What was the name of the ring of thieves who stole the Shroud of Turin in Death Masks?

4) Who was the only member of this group to still be alive at the end of DM?
