DF Spoilers / Re: Anyone else... disappointed? [PT/BG spoilers]
« on: October 11, 2020, 01:36:41 AM »
I know it is not really the same as 25 books, but wheel of time is at 4 million words and Dresden Files is at around 2 million currently. ( I only used one source for each so I could be wrong)

https://sites.google.com/site/batuhanswebsitecom/wheel-of-time
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://amp.reddit.com/r/dresdenfiles/comments/29lhkq/word_count_for_all_books/&ved=2ahUKEwizzNL1sKvsAhUE_CoKHYPPAg4QFjAAegQIEhAB&usg=AOvVaw3eyBi2eG9HYwCr5j2cWrdN

I am only one third through wheel of time, but from what I can read it is widely accepted that a couple of the middle ones are not so good. I think it is just very unlikely to write 25 good books in a row, regardless of whether they have an overarching story or not. So of one bad book is enough to stop you from read the rest of the series then my guess would be you would never get to no. 25.

But now I read it as being bored with more than just the single book, then I guess there is not much hope.

On Butters, I reread my post, but I cannot figure out what you mean.

Also, I did not really think anything about Butters being with two girls before reading people's reactions here on the forum. Ok, so we have a good guy who is not in a normal relationship, but in a triangle. I mainly paid attention to that Harry managed to shut up and not make fun of him.

Borrowing a page from the person answering about people star wars background; is it because you are not used to anything but traditional couples?

The main complaint I read is that it is because they think Jim is trying to make Butters cooler. But he was already with what I guess is the hottest mortal in the series in a conventional cool guy sense(a very athletic redhead with big breasts). Does it really add that much that there is another girl?

If I had to say what it gives to the story I would say Jim is underlining that the knights do not have to be traditional Christians in yet another way. I approve of that because he has already shown the perfect Christian classic knight in Micheal.

To be fair I also like it and find it fitting if it is just Rudolf.

At the same time it just seems like too good a way to turn Harry to the dark side not to consider it could be someone actively trying.

My main frustration is that everyone who jumped fast where described "like being pulled by wires". And the seven or so references to Butters really having improved due to his knight training.

Personally every single book Jim has written has been perfect for me except PT and BG. But at least for me, doing some work while going through personal problems that makes it take six times longer than normal does not improve the end result.

If some people cannot handle a single bad duology in a series of 25 books then my guess is 25 book long series are not your thing.

On a similar note, few people seem to agree on what should have been different except in very general terms. E.g. Someone suggested Murphy should have died off screen while I found that scene particular scene to be perfect and would have thought her dying off screen would be horrible.

I wish that there had been more time for editing and beta reading input implementation. But it is also my guess that not publishing for six years (or something) reduces your bargaining power significantly. Imagine of they had decided, ok one more rewrite and it would not have been published this year. I would also guess that at some point it has been rewritten so much that the author cannot do it anymore.

I think the TWG is directly responsible for Murphy demise, I don't know why. Perhaps because she was not going to be happy ever again with so many injuries, perhaps because He needs that Harry losses her. I don't know. But Murphy did a wonderful thing, deserving a reward and perhaps Rest is the reward.

Why do I say that he is responsible, because too many "random" things led to Murphy's death. Bradley couldn't move with his daughter and Rudolph at the same time, so Harry and Murhpy asked him to leave Rudolph. The gun dropped to the floor and no one had the time to take it. Then Rudolph completely freak out. And Harry suddenly (not before that) discovered that he couldn't raise his arm for a Forzare. I just think there are too many "coincidences" and I only can see the TWG as having that control over reality.

Dina suggested in another thread that perhaps TWG is responsible for Murphs death. I think it is far more likely to be one of his opposites.

Can you think of anything that is not very elaborate or involves killing children that would be better at making Harry fall than exactly what happened here? It took two whole knights of the cross to counter it.

So I guess there is
Marcone/thorned nashiel
Nic
Lucifer or some demon

Because has the most to win (that I can figure out) and is the only one present in the book I am leaning toward Marcone. If Dresden had killed Rudolf the chances that he could/would team up with Marcone at some point are pretty good I think.

Also, it would be fitting if Marcone was the real killer of Murph.

If it had worked Marcone might end up with an ally and have avoided the eventual conflict with Dresden. Now that it did not, he is just still looking forward to that eventual conflict, even if Dresden finding outwould of course accelerate it.

What do you think?

I think we can all agree that out of Luccio, Lara, Mab and Molly, Molly is by far the one that comes closest to Harrys age and maturity level. Even if we "just" pretended that the other three were 100 years old.

Thanks a lot :-)

But in that case I guess he more or less openly defied them just now?

So Harry has the eye of Hate/love and the sword of love and he is pretty much fuelled by love (of his daughter) and to some degree of the rest of humanity. I think he will pick both up at some point and it will be epic.

Listen to Mab, the White Council is going to realize that they need that wolf and take him back.  At the moment they see him as a monster. But I bet inside of a book or two, Harry is going to confront them about something as Rashid predicted, and they will realize, he is their monster.

I cant remember this, when did Rashid say it?

I realise it does not work so well with the fomor. But if it had been e.g. the red court, then the attack would have come from another country. It is not not the goverment of that country, just like another terrorist group who had kind of taken over a country.

I think it is worth pointing out that there is really big difference between an active hex and the "murphionic field". Harry can stand next to someone with a walkie for a reeeealy long time without affecting it. But he can also hex it in a couple of seconds.

I am pretty sure that a good wizard can hex a helicopter if he is close to it, but I would guess that the apaches can engage the wizard from pretty far away.

When reading I try to chose the interpretation that lets me enjoy the text the most. In regards to the super hex I would think that very reliable systems that is not too close to the source, such as nuclear generators, might be less affected. But I think the people in hospitals are out of luck. With the pacemakers, maybe there is some protection to be had from being inside a human? It would make the use of the swallowed usb device even smarter.

DF Spoilers / Harry following in his mothers footsteps (BG Spoilers)

I think it is interesting that Margeret tried to reform the council and the way wizards were allowed to work and now Harry has taken it one step further by just outright being a wizard independent of the council who is not going to follow their rules.

Do you think Elaine is going to join him? Any other wizards?

Do you think he will write a new "laws of magic"?

I think if Mab wants Harry and Lara to get a kid I cannot see how they will not get one in the very first try.

It is a pretty smart move from Mab. If there is one thing that seems entirely certain it is that Harry protects his children and that he does not want them to grow up orphans (if he can avoid it). After feeling so bad about killing Maggies mother there is no way he will ever let anything happen to Lara. The way his guilt trips works anything that happened to her would be something that he should have thought about protecting her from.

Also, now that the masquerade is starting to fall, I can see why Mab wants to have a strong alliance with the most competent manipulators of humankind.

As I read it the blast at the end of peace talks was the intentionally hex everything blast. So the people in the know who keeps stuff like a motorcycle and walkie talkies protected within magical circles still have functioning electronics, everyone else don't. Then when they take those electronics out of the circles they start breaking down fast because of all the magical energy in the air, but that is very far from the super hex in the beginning.

That attack helicopters arrive after Titania's water cleansing of the city and after dawn, so that is entirely different.

It does not seem odd to me that the army can send choppers to shoot stuff and make the pilots not talk aboit it afterwards and disappear the footage.

If it happened today and we knew about the losses, and then someone said that the magical frog people did it. I honestly think it would take quite some time before (of ever) the majority of people would take that seriously over chemical weapons of some sort and other advanced weaponry. But I think you are right about that someone needs to be blamed for it to be semi-believeable. Some middle eastern country maybe?

I am a bit uncertain about this part with Eb. I mean I can't see any way that En would accept killing Harry. So now that the World is getting darker than ever, how smart is it of the white council to throw out one of their best fighters and threaten to throw out their absolute number one fighter?
