Author Craft / What’s the best way to get your book published?
« on: May 31, 2011, 06:00:39 PM »
Okay so I’ve been of the mind that the best thing for a new author to do is seek out a literary agent, and have him send your book to a publisher, and have them release the book assuming they like what they read. But now you hear about all the options to self publishers, such as eBook conversion and consignment.

I know nothing on publishers/ing, and it’s something I’m not going to stress too much over until my work is complete. But I wanted to ask you all what’s your take on the publishing scene. In this day and age would a majority of you still recommend to new authors going to an agent and to a publisher? Or if done right is certain aspects of self publishing becoming more profitable?

Thanks for the advice in advance

Author Craft / Educating on the backstory of your Novel
« on: May 13, 2011, 11:08:10 AM »
So something I noticed that's pretty common these days is authors tend to just drive right on through the doors in the first chapter without telling the location right off the bat. For example in TDF Harry tells us he's a wizard in chapter 1 but a lot of the backstory details are filled in later throughout the book.

So my question would have to be is there a reason authors do this? At the current time in my manuscript my first chapter starts off by educating the reader on what's going on in the world, and how the supernatural scene works before he sets out on his daily routine, but I'm not sure if that's something that I should try and break up and litter throughout the book or not. Any opinions are appreciated

So I've heard both sides of the story. I'm planning a series, that could span a few books to a few hundred(not really). I'm not finished with the first draft yet, but in thoughts of randomness last night I came up with the final chapter of the book following the events of the final confrontation. Looking on message boards I've seen people say that some publishers will be more interested in you if you have a planned series, because then you're showing them you don't plan on being a one hit wonder or something...

on the other hand...

I recently read that publishers may reject you if they know you wrote the first book as part of the series, because of the chance that they sign you on, spend money on releasing your book to the public, then it tanks and doesn't sell at all.

Soooooo with that in mind I wanted to get some insight from you. Which would you say holds more true?

If it's true publishers don't prefer series from the start, then I pose this question. At the end of my book, I wrap things up, the bad guy is beaten, and hero saves the day, but I also leave a lot of questions open, a couple of them not even appearing until the last couple chapters. Would that be acceptible? Or would I be safest closing all doors on the first book?

Author Craft / An Update on Literary Works!
« on: May 06, 2011, 03:52:10 PM »
How's it going everyone? It's been awhile since I posted anything fresh, and I thought I'd make this topic and ask how all your works are coming along? Mine is slow, but sure!
Right now I'd say my biggest hurdle is that I'm not a writer. This is my first go at a book, but my imagination runs wild with ideas, and I figure why not give it a try? The worst that can happen is...nothing! But it's tough for me to dedicate a certain time of day to writing at the moment, so I usually just write when ideas flow or I have a lot of down time. Anyway let me take you on a tour without divulging any details per JB's requests of sharing ideas:

1. My current story is a supernatural noir story very much like TDF, but I think I have a very unique approach and a lot of original ideas.  It will be set during modern day on the east coast and will deal with a lot of elements in the supernatural and with historical mythology. I can tell you that the main character doesn't know what he is. He begins showing signs of being a supernatural entity, and throughout the story he will find out what that is. This series, if successful, can go as long as the reader wants it to. I have enough ideas for quite a few books! I'm currently about 1/4 through my skeleton draft, which in my world means the story and side stories minus details of people and places.

2. This story is a blossoming idea between a friend and I. It's going to be a fantasy tale set in a fictional world. All I have right now is the plot of the book, the hero and the villian. I still need to create the world, characters, and landscapes. The story I thought up for this is amazing in my opinion, although I guess I'm biased. It will be either a trilogy or 5 books long, and will essentially deal with the aspects of growing up, learning courage and honor. I'm VERY excited about this one.

3. My final idea was actually one of my first, and that's a sci fi space story. I had about 61 pages of this written but essentially lost interest when I thought up my supernatural one. I think my second problem was reaching too high, thinking I could create a brand new universe. If I dedicated myself I probably could but ultimately I decided to put it on hold. My entire life I've loved the Star Trek series. Especially TNG. I enjoyed the new movie but I know a lot of people didn't like it. Anyway if I ever become a succesful author I plan on transorming my sci-fi story into a star trek story and submitting it to the powers that be. During the airing of the TNG series I lived and breathed ST, and it saddens me that it's not mainstream anymore. I would love a chance to help reignite it!

Anyway that's what I've been up to! I'm really excited for these ideas I have, and I wanted to thank all of you for your help on my many topics I've created here. Let me know how you're doing!

Author Craft / Advice on a Good Mythological Creatures Book
« on: April 23, 2011, 03:24:58 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good Mythological Creatures encyclopedia? My book series has a lot do to with creatures and folklore of every nationality and I'm trying to find a book that encompasses them all. I found one on amazon.com: The Mythical Creatures Bible: The Definitive Guide to Legendary Beings by Brenda Rosen but it's only available from sellers and out of print at Barnes n Noble. If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it.

Okay so my main character is about to visit a police station in a city which I live near. I'm not sure whether I should or even can try and research what the station looks like and write it accurately in my book, or if I would be better off just using a make believe station.

Opinions? Thanks everyone!  ;D

Author Craft / What's a good way to "Copywrite" My work?
« on: March 23, 2011, 05:22:51 PM »
Obviously as I write my story I'm not going to go handing it out to numerous people and say here read this i trust you not to steal it from me, but as I move along having a chosen few people to read over it and give me feedback really helps my motivation for writing more and also helps me to decide what needs changed. Sooo like the topic says;

How exactly do I copywrite my work so far that it can't be stolen and used by someone else? Is it even possible to copywrite an unfinished script? Or does it have to be finished? Is it even worth it? Let me know guys I appreciate it!

I have my characters ready for the most part, I'm forming the branches of baddies, friends, random extras, but the one thing I have left to decide on is where to place my story location wise. I would definately like to place it close to a city.

I was going to place in my own city, but is there any unspoken advice about using the city you live next to? If not I think it would be the easiest route, as doing research would be very simple for streets and places that my character would visit.

Now once you have the location down, what do you do about the stores, shops, and food places? For example if I wanted my characters to go to a bar to have a few drinks is it recommended that I create one rather than use a real location?

Author Craft / What is the rule in using pop culture referances?
« on: March 16, 2011, 01:12:40 PM »
I see JB do it every now and then in the DV, and I see it on certain TV shows as well, but what is the rule of that? To what degree can you make a referance to something that's not your own work and not get in trouble for it. For example:

"You are not human, you come from an Alien race known as the Primes."
"Ooooh okay, and can I transform into something? How would that work anyway? Would I have to break my bones and reorganize them?"

Now is using that considered all well and good? Or would that be a no no?

Author Craft / How Unique if at all should my Characters name be?
« on: March 15, 2011, 07:10:11 PM »
Should I try and come up with a name that is rare?

I picked one name and searched it on google and got like 4 million links back haha!

Author Craft / To Make my Hero Supernatural or Not? O.o
« on: March 15, 2011, 12:55:41 PM »
Okay so last night I was brainstorming an idea, and I came up with something that excites me! Without giving too much away or putting any ideas on the board I thought up a tale of three people who all had different abilities, and I even came up with abilities that weren't the common type (wizard, vampire, werewolf, etc.)

It would be a first person view through my main character, who I wanted to be a sort of young, geeky guy who turned out to be somewhat like an unorthodox sherlock holmes.

But now I'm questioning myself as to whether I should give him powers at all? Here's my arguement:

Giving him an ability: I love reading novels where the hero has powers of some sort. If Harry Dresden were a regular man I would still enjoy the series but the fact that he's a wizard just makes the story a hell of a lot more fun. With my hero using abilties it leaves him able to battle with other supernatural forces and not be completely outmatch and outgunned all the time. I did plan on this book being a supernatural world of sorts. I also feel like giving him an ability would allow him to grow over the course of the series(assuming it was succesful)

Not giving him an ability: Even though I love reading about heroes with powers, one of the reasons I love heroes like Batman and detectives like Sherlock is because they have the ability to thwart the bad guy without any abilities. I think it can make the story richer if you have a supernatural force going head to head with your hero and he has to defeat him with wits and skill.

So, any opinions are appreciated. I was going to start a rough draft of the first chapter to see where it takes me but I'm stuck on what to do about my hero. I planned on him having a power of his own but I feel maybe the story would be more suspenseful without one? Thanks guys!

Being that I'm new to the writing gig I find it ten times easier to write a story in the first person. Even when reading books I tend to stick to first person novels I just feel more immersed in the story.

My issue is the one book I'm planning to write is impossible to write from just one persons point of view, and to really get everything in there I want I would have to write from three. I know it's possible to do, but in your opinion can it be done in a way that flows well? If adding that many POV's would really take the reader out of the story I'd much rather just give third person a try.

Opinions are appreciated, thanks!

Author Craft / New Aspiring Writer Joining Your Ranks!
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:26:16 PM »
Hi, I'm Tom and I'm an alch...I mean an aspiring writer. I'm a huge Jim Butcher fan. I was never a huge book person. Usually I just don't have the patience and attention to sit down and really read for a long periods of time. The Dresden Files changed that. I currently am reading the series from start to finish for my third time waiting for Ghost Story.

Anyway, one thing I always thought I had was a great imagination, and a few years ago I started putting together ideas for a story of my own. I have no writing experience or anything, but just recently I finished putting together what I think would be three very good stories. The problem is picking one and writing just that one (Everytime I go to my wife with a new idea she smacks me upside the head and tells me to just write one for now lol).

My first story, one I've been mentally putting together for years now is a mixture of sci fi and fantasy, think King Arthur in the 25th Century maybe lol.

My second story is a space one. There is so much out there already in terms of sci fi but my idea is a first person perspective with a crew member thats only just begun his career aboard a city sized starship.

My third one I just begun the planning process but it's a modern day supernatural tale. There are a ton of these as well but again I think I have a decent twist on it to make it original.

Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself. Up until now I've only been able to discuss ideas and get feedback through my wife and one friend who is also writing, but I was very excited when I saw this board, what better place to talk to other aspiring authors and get some Butcher news at the same time!

See you around! ;D
