DF Books / Re: Something which irks me
« on: October 01, 2020, 07:15:05 AM »
Book artist was told Wizard PI so drew that, and then kept drawing the hat in part just to spite/joke with Jim.

In one of the short stories (Herot), Dresden ponders whether he should get a hat so that he could protect his tracking spell from the rain  :P

Carries over to one of Jims other series where the main character always wears a hat, so the artist drew him without one.
I'm assuming you're talking about Cinder Spires. It's been a while but I don't remember the main character wearing a hat, only goggles....because "steam punk"  ;)

DF Books / Re: Jim Butcher is the kind of author who would...

Yes that sounds very much like Butcher's style but considering how painful iron is to the fae and how loved characters like Toot Toot and Lacuna are, it would be for tragic tear-jerker effect. Maniacal laugh inducing pixie torture would be pinning one to a wall with molten pizza cheese  ;D

DF Books / Re: Just re-read the entire series
« on: October 01, 2020, 06:50:10 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else just did an entire re-read in preparation for Peace Talks. I got an ARC of Peace Talks, and decided that before I read it, I would re-read the entire series, and it was such a different experience for me. When I started the Dresden files I was in my late 20s, un-married, no kids. Now I am married, have a daughter, and in a totally different place in my life. Just wondering who else had a more recent re-read that maybe felt quite different from the first time.

I know this is an old thread but I can't lurk on the spoilers forum until I get BG  ....my copy wont arrive until the 6th Oct  >:(
anyway....Yes I re-read the entire series before PT. Yes I feel entirely different about Dresden's attitudes towards women, especially young women, in the series compared to when I first started reading it 15 years ago. When I first started reading the series, I just thought he was "old fashioned", now I find it quite annoying. The later books he has the winter mantle driving him so its like he never grew out of the young male pervy attitude.

Incidentally, this time around I read the series backward...ie starting with skin game and reading back to storm front. I picked up on a lot of foreshadowed clues that way and the exposition/rehashing of previous events in later books didn't bother me as much.

DF Spoilers / Re: Now THAT's what I call a Sample Chapter!

maybe if she'd seen it first hand and not heard of it happening?

Except that in PT she knows about the jail break (I had to go back and find the passage to be sure).
She closed her eyes and thought for a moment about what I had told her. "Oh God, you're going to go get Thomas, aren't you?"

From there it's not a big stretch for Molly to deduce that the Harry/Lara sex glamour was a diversion.

DF Spoilers / Re: We Now Know What/Who Mac Is
« on: September 16, 2020, 10:11:38 AM »
Would "fallen" be the right term? The fallen in DF are bound to coins and still have angelic power whereas Mac is mortal (I think there's a WOJ about it somewhere). He's clearly taken a different path compared to the denarians. Something more like the German movie "Wings of Desire" ie angel decides to become human.

Everyone at the PTs thinks lara took harry in the back and had her way with him remember? Nobody outside of the rescue team knows that was an illusion. Molly is jelly AF

DOH! forgot about that. Though I wonder whether Molly would be able to see through that glamour.

Regarding Molly:
What we know so far from PT
Lara has had a big bite to eat
Carlos has been injured again messing with "the wrong monster" in the line of duty "as it turned out".
and now from BG: Molly is really pissed at Lara
My working hypothesis is that Lara fed on Carlos and now Molly is pissed.

The lose end still hanging in my hypothesis is how is it in the line of duty??

DF Spoilers / Re: White Court Spy And Why Thomas attacked/murdered
« on: September 12, 2020, 06:29:21 AM »
I wonder if we'll have to wait for the next book to find out Thomas's motivations. Harry has to deal with Ethniu before he can release his brother from hibernation....unless Harry finds out during the battle with the Titan.

DF Spoilers / Re: Scenes you want...

I was really hoping to see mother Murphy staying over....cue awkward scenes with Harry and Karrin trying to get intimate but Mum is staying over ;)

I don't think that there's anything special about incubus wamps that Papa Raith hates other than competition. In BR (I think), Thomas says that his father controls his daughters by feeding on them (which is icky) but he killed or arranged the deaths of his male offspring because "his tastes don't run that way". He doesn't control his sons by feeding on them so they are a potential threat to his power and can overthrow him.
I like the cupid angle. Maybe Maggie senior arranged something with Thomas the same way she arranged for Harry to be starborn.

Anyway..I definitely think we are being misdirected in some way. There are constant references to Harry's father, a stage magician and they are all about misdirection so there is something that's hidden in plain sight for us....whether that's Justine, her baby or something else.

DF Spoilers / Re: Murphy

A warm bath has "magical" restorative powers that have nothing to do with actual magic   :D
There are hints that she's actually in a bit of pain. She may be holding it back probably for Harry's sake or as a matter of pride.
I'm in the "she's smart, quick and underestimated" camp when it comes to her abilities against supernatural powers

The spoilers have both been extensively discussed in their threads, Nemesis allow one to act without the normal restriction. Cat Sith wants to kill Harry from meeting him, he literally can’t because of his oath to Mab. Mortals operate under free will, it is pointless nemfecting them.
Re spoilers...yeah, I wasn't sure of the rules on what should and shouldn't be under a spoiler tag even on a spoiler board. My bad  :)
Re Nemfections....Do we know for certain that Nemesis only infects beings without will or have certain restrictions? (I haven't read the short stories in Brief Cases so I don't know if there are any clues there). Humans have ethical and moral restrictions too. Michael would never abandon his wife and children. He has free will to do so but it's against his nature.

Thomas never says Justine's name.  Harry assumes it.  It means something, but your guess is as good as anybody's.
Exactly. The alternative is that Thomas is trying to say someone else's name. Justin is the only other character that I remember that starts with "J" but would Thomas know him?

What if to get the monster (Ethnui or Corb) Butters needs to slice through Harry or an innocent being held as a shield, it may be a set up for that.
True, there may be lots of reasons why the "safety sword" was introduced. The romantic in me wants the sword to save the baby though ;)

DF Spoilers / There's something about Justine (PT and BG spoilers +WAG)
« on: August 08, 2020, 04:53:35 AM »
My partner and I have been arguing over Justine's true nature in PT. As a casual lurker on this site I thought I'd see what everyone else thinks.
Thomas keeps trying to say her name every time Harry tries talk to him

. He's quite insistent about it even after Harry reassures him that he'll look after her and that she is safe. Then Grey called her a femme fatale.

My other WAG regards the sword of faith...
