If you can find them I recommend the "Hawaiian Dick" comic books for inspiration. They're about a PI in 1950's Hawaii whose cases keep stumbling into the realm of the supernatural. It's published by Image and the books so far are "Hawaiian Dick: Byrd in Paradise" (Byrd is the name of the PI), "Hawaiian Dick: The Last Resort" and "Hawaiian Dick: Screaming Black Thunder".

Well they'll be motivated if they knew one of the decapitated victims, or if someone they knew only just escaped with their lives.

They'll be motivated to look into the decapitations because as I mentioned they're working in Special Investigations and thus working the case (unless some of them want to play other roles like a consultant or reporter working with the department). I was asking if people thought the Whitecourt crime reporter was a lead that would get followed.

Got the first line of the prophesy.

When next the chalice of the Lord is held aloft by bloody wing . . .

Given that I intend to set the game in Detroit I think at least one of my players will be able to parse that line. Hint if you can't it helps to be a sports fan.

(I like your format Evilnerf, consider it ganked.)

Name or Chant: Tempre con Forza (I think the Italian on this is wrong.)

In universe it's SUPPOSED to be wrong so you don't accidentally cast during normal conversation.

I think I'm going to go with the prophesy angle for the actual killer just because the prophecies let me set up a future case for the PC's. Now if only I could find a random prophecy generator that I could set for extra doom with a side of hallucinogens and tentacles.

A red herring that recently occurred to me is a White Court vampire of clan Malvora, nothing like a serial killer to ramp up fear after all. Might have him working the crime beat for the local paper. Sound like something typical PC's would look into?

Some interesting ideas. Thanks.

I'm thinking of running a Special Investigation based game once I grok the rules well enough and I think the characters first case will be catching a serial killer who takes their victims heads with him. I'm toying with the idea of them discovering that it really is a mundane psycho this time but even if that's what I go with I need some good red herrings for them to chase. What in the Dresden verse would collect peoples heads and why?

I suppose a Necromancer might take the heads away so they can be questioned (perhaps for bank account information) or simply tortured for fun . . .

Any other ideas?

Came here to start this thread and here it is already!

Admittedly my input on Detroit is largely Vancouver Method as it's on the other side of the state from me but I'd think that Urban Decay, Poverty, and possibly Corruption would be strong themes in modern Detroit.

As for who's behind the casinos . . . Skavis. Nothing generates despair like losing your house due to gambling debts. Or, since as someone else pointed out the Native Americans run the casinos, the Skavis could have the market cornered on bookies and loan sharks. Possibly a recent development generating some conflict between them and the local mob.

I'd be surprised if Skavis, Malvora, and Raith weren't all represented in town. The poverty generates despair but it can also lead to crime (desperate people just trying to make ends meet) which generates FEAR for the Malvora to feed on. As for the Raith, lots of strip clubs and hookers in Detroit.

I'm going to gen up an NPC (will probably turn into a PC if I get to play) who works for the Detroit version of Special Investigations. I'm thinking they need a better name than SI though, any ideas?

Beneath all that armor of snark and cynicism, Harry has a heart like a pile of sleeping kittens -- soft and sweet with sharp little teeth and claws.

I agree with von Bek, what a fabulous quote! Can that be in the game?
I third that suggestion.

A quote that sums up Dresden better than Mr. Butcher himself.

Two quotes for Driving (although it is a bit of an unconventional vehicle, but Survival doesn't seem quite apropriate either) if anyone has a better idea about what skill would be used to ride a reanimated T-rex through Chicago then you can use these quotes for that skill.

Dead Beat Chapter 39:
I didn't know this before, but as it turns out, Tyrannosaurs can really haul ass.

Dead Beat Chapter 39:
Here's something else I bet you didn't know about Tyrannosaurs: they don't corner well. The first time I tried to take a left, Sue swung wide, the enormous momentum of her body simply too much for even her muscles to lightly command. She swung up onto the sidewalk, crushed three parked cars under her feet, knocked over two light poles, kicked a compact car end over end to land on its roof, and broke every window on the first two floors of the building beside us as her tail lashed back and forth in an effort to counterbalance her body.
