Wondering if JediTigger is still sleeping after that marathon at Dragon*Con!   :o

Anyone going to this one who gets to meet the Jim-wrangling Pam would be well advised to hug her to within an inch of her life. She's beyond awesomesauce.

Seconded and thirded. She found us and we hung on to her (literally, once!)  She was so far beyond cool she lost sight of it in the rearview.

Best. Answer. Ever. Of course, I'm WAY more Rue than Katniss so I'd be SO dead. 'Cellie would probably be the one decorating me in flowers.

No, wait, I like the Rue metaphor, but from earlier on ;-) POOF, you're right there going "shhh," with a handful of Everything You Need, then THIS WAY! and instant Perfect Hiding Spot, then soft smile and point behind you, there you go, Exactly What You Were Looking For. Ta-dahhh.

Cowl goes straight from CL to CL++. What's CL+? And yeah, could someone clarify how parentheses are supposed to be used?

Contextually, I guessed that parentheses were used when more than one option was true for the fan.  For example, I'm fond of Mac being a clued-in vet who answers to no one, but also fond of the idea that he's THE Merlin ;D

Figured I'd finally download the upgrade to v1.2 ;)

It was a nice panel discussion. I wish I'd taken my Flip Video recorder to get it all, but I forgot. Jim was kind of tired, but all of the writers had interesting stories to tell about getting into the writing biz. They were pretty much all in agreement that they didn't have a clue what they did to wind up on the NYT List, except they had been sticking to writing and submitting things until one day they wound up there, to their complete surprise.

Indeed.  Some of them said they just got lucky and were writing urban fiction when no one wanted to read it, then suddenly it got popular and people started buying up their manuscripts.

Does Anyone who went to DragonCon this year, have any low down on what transpired at the "NYT Bestseller's Tell All Panel"?

Apparently after the Book Cover panel, I went to lunch and then crashed in the room totally missing it.

I believe the panelist's were:

Kevin J. Anderson
Laurel K. Hamilton
Jim Butcher
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Jonathan Maberry

Anything?

It was greatness.  No questions from the audience, all panel interviewer questions.  Things like, how long were you writing before you were published, how long were you published before you made the NYT Bestseller list, how long until you made #1, how did you get your break, tell us an embarrassing story, advice for aspiring writers, etc.  Interestingly, a lot of their answers were very similar.  "Ten years" seemed like a standard, their breaks were lucky, they have HUNDREDS of rejection letters, etc.  And they all pretty much said "Don't Quit" as their advice.  Just keep writing.

Sherrilyn had been injured by then (I'm told she fell and had a brace on her arm that she had not had the afternoon before :-( )  Jonathan Maberry's embarrassing story (I think it was his?) was that he was at con and someone saw his badge, that it was a "Guest" badge and said, "You're a guest, but I don't recognize your name.  You must be an author."  Jim Butcher told the story about when his son walked through a telephone interview he was having with his wife and the interviewer asked their son what it was like to have two published authors for parents, was he amazed by what they'd accomplished, and his son answered, "If these two can do it, how hard can it be?"

Laurell K. Hamilton got a LOT of panel time, which was neat (Jim Butcher kind of hung back a bit, since he'd just finished his hour-long all-to-himself interview and had answered many of the questions already).  She told a lot of stories about submitting her work over and over, about going to conventions, about finally getting accepted and being congratulated in an elevator by another publisher (or agent?) who said, "I wish I'd gotten a shot at publishing you!"  She answered, "You did."  (Apparently this was someone who'd previously rejected her!)

Shecky told HER, since I asked the question.  ;)

WHOOPS!  Sorry!  It was early.  ;)

Uhhhh, what does "much <3 mean," btw?

One.  Two is just less than three.  One is MUCH less than three.  ;D

::duck::

Just kidding!  I can't find where someone wrote that, but it means "Much love."  :)

Much <3 for the origin of Bob, as well as Jim's martial arts story. :)

"You no make good punch."  ROTFL!  Told that story to my partner at fight practice tonight!

And OMG Bob's impersonation!  I will NEVER hear Bob's voice the same way again.  The person asking the question said Shecky told him Jim does a good Bob impersonation and asked him to do it :D

You know the writer of "Head Trip"? Awesome.

Dude!  YOU know the writer of "The Dresden Files!" :)  (It is fun watching writers squee over each other, though.  ;D )

I think this is the cartoon he is talking about in the video: http://headtripcomics.comicgenesis.com/d/20100414.html

Yep, Amanda draws "Head Trip."  We were sitting in the back of that panel, and we whipped out our cell phones as soon as he started mentioning it:  "OMG he's narrating your comic!"  Amanda:  ".....!!!"

I hope Butcher comes back next year. DragonCon did say something about him possibly doing that, but ya never know. D:

If he does, they know now to give him MUCH bigger panel rooms! ;)

I've stayed at that Days Inn several times in the past, but it has gone waaaay down hill recently. The last time I stayed there, the lamination on the door was peeling up and it stank of mold and crud.

Yeah, there was that.  Our door was chipped and peeling, too, and molded.  And it wouldn't close or open unless you lift and pull (the screws were rotting out of the jamb).  But it was cheap!  In every sense of the word!

I was at the Westin, I got a deal though hotwire for $69 a night. We had the Browncoat and Steampunk tracks in our hotel, and everything else was only a block away, so I feel Like we got a good con experience from the hotel without having to deal with the headaches of the main 4 hotels.

We stayed at the Days Inn, which was only two blocks from all the convention hotels.  Not a bad deal.  And no wait for the elevators ;)  I must admit, though, last year was our first Dragon*Con (where my avatar photo was taken), and we stayed at the Marriott, and it was AMAZINGLY fabulous!  Expensive, though!  ::cringe::
