I thought I'd create a thread specifically aimed at Robert to check when he can, in order for some questions to avoid being buried in time.

However, we have to be careful and not flood this thread with random questions. So, rules of this thread:

1) No questions obviously aimed at plot points that will be revealed later in the show.

2) Nothing personal, in this thread. This is for Dresden Files TV show questions, only. If he deviates, well, he's allowed.

3) Don't discuss or derail the thread. If you want to discuss something he's said, make your own thread and quote him.  He can come in that thread and discuss it with you...the point of this thread isn't a one-stop shop for all things Robert, but simply a place where he can see  questions and answer them. If we get into discussions, this thread will wander all over the place (something I normally don't mind, but this thread is an exception).

4) Please do your homework before asking a question...see if you can find the answers elsewhere, first. Unlike some, I do not mind when someone new to the boards asks a question that's been discussed to death, but if an answer is readily answerable elsewhere, then it's a waste of breath in this particular thread. Please also note that there's a FAQ forum near the top of this board. At the time of this writing, it's a tad threadbare, but it is growing.

5) Bear in mind he may choose to be obtuse or outright not answer a question. He has a show to protect.

Ok, if I set up an invite-only BB for the authors here to write stories and post for each other, would people be interested?

This is nothing Jim-Official, just us getting together.

Phil Boswell has given us an unintentional challenge:
" How much mileage could you realistically get out of a protagonist who is good at reducing themselves to dripping goo?"

While the board would be open to helping anyone with any story, I was thinking about having writing assignments, to push people...that could be the first one

DRESDEN FILES (Books)

Is it just me, or did the name of Bianca's assistant (who died in Storm Front and came back in Grave Peril as a ghost)  change between books?

Nope, it's not you. From a board discussion about evil being intent or consequences, Jim lists out several examples of the consequences side of that equation, where the intentions were good, and ends on this little tidbit:
"I just wanted to get that book finished while working two jobs and finishing a brutal semester of grad school.  It wasn't my intention to screw up the name of Bianca's personal assistant whose death had motivated her to go all power hungry to get revenge on Harry."

What's this about the magical branding of a car?

Dead Beat, Chapter 8...the fight with Cowl.

On one page Harry flips a Toyota on top of the bad guy; on the next page there's a werewolf on top of "the wrecked Buick". -Phil Boswell

Spoiler Answers / The Dresden Files: The White Council
« on: July 11, 2006, 04:01:15 PM »
Who are the White Council?

They are the governing body of the wizard community, although not all wizards cede them authority. Those that don't tend to be hunted by the Council, however, if they break the Laws of Magic.

More to come on this subject.

What are the Laws of Magic?

They are the Rules Which Shall Not Be Broken Under Pain of Death, set forth by the White Council. For the first several books, we only hear about a few of them, although in Blood Rites, Ebenzer appears to list them all:

"Quote from: paperback, p.296
1) To kill.
2) To enthrall.
3) To invade the thoughts of another mortal.
4) To seek knowledge and power from beyond the Outer Gates.
5) To transform others.
6) To reach beyond the borders of life.
7) To swim against the currents of time.

I don't know if these are the correct order of the laws, just the order Ebenezar said the sentences in." (Thanks to Blitz for the transcription. Please note that in the actual text, these are not numbered, just listed in the dialogue.)

Author Craft / The Illusion of Danger
« on: July 11, 2006, 01:47:00 PM »
That the protagonist is in danger in fantasy noir (and most books, really) is an illusion...sometimes, in rare cases, they die, but usually you're really looking to see how they get out of the mess they're in.

Based on acknowledgement of this as a conceptual truth...how would you guys feel about a protagonist who cannot die? There's never any mortal danger (to the main character), and you know this up front, but there are plenty of other ways to mess with said main character.

How would you guys react to such a situation?

(And yes, this is more than just theoretical. It involves a project I'm working on.)

Why, yes there is. The good folks at Lionsgate and Saturn Films are producing the show for the SciFi Channel in the US.

The first season consists of a 2 hour pilot which is based around Storm Front, with another 11 episodes which sci-fi t.v have ordered. Making season 1 13 episodes in total.

Writers, from Robert Wolfe, in the show's pre-production stage:
Quote
With permission from those involved, here is the core of the writing staff for The Dresden Files:

David Simkins (Executive Producer/Writer): David is a terrific guy whom I've known since we were in a writer's group when we both were starting out (well, he'd written "Adventures in Babysitting" already and I was a nobody, but more or less). David will be the David Eick to Hans and my collective Ron Moore (twice the body parts, half the talent!). The only bad thing I can say about David is he's a macHead. I'm a PCer. Luckily, we bear no resemblence to the dweebs in the commercials and we manage to get along. (Hans is neutral, kind of like the Swiss without the punctuality.)

Curtis Kheel (Supervising Producer/Writer): In addition to being a very talented writer, Curtis brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and genre knowledge to the table. He came highly recommended by all our friends in the business. David, Hans, and I hired him anyway. Another macHead. What the heck is wrong with these people? If he says "We did something like that on Charmed" one more time, we will kill him. We're certain no court in the land would convict us.

Jack Bernstein (Consulting Producer/Writer): Jack is a spectacular writer who looks vaguely like Gene Simmons. Though I'm pretty sure he was never in KISS. We suspect he is secretly filthy rich from writing "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" but we try not to let our petty jealousy consume us. Jack brings lots of procedural experience from his time on NCIS and he recently wrote a terrific "Monk."

We'll be adding a few more people in the next couple of weeks, but, as a group, David, Hans, Curtis, Jack and I have already starting working up story ideas, discussing tone and approach, and doing a lot of writerly nuts and bolts (more nuts than bolts so far). It's been a blast so far. Of course, the really hard work is still ahead of us, but with such a talented group, I'm very optimistic about the upcoming weeks and months.
