DABEL BROTHERS LAUNCH NEW ONLINE STORE WITH TWO EXCLUSIVE 'A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE' ART PRINTS & A 'DRESDEN FILES' POSTER
Dabel Brothers Publishing's online storefront offers fans of George R. R. Martin and Jim Butcher the chance to order three never-before-seen, stunning pieces of artwork… just in time for the holidays!

Fans of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files have something special to look forward to this holiday season.

That's because the Dabel Brothers announced that with the re-opening of their official online storefront, they're offering an exclusive poster and two limited edition art prints featuring beautiful, never-before-seen artwork… just in time for the holiday season!

The two art prints feature characters from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. One print shows Ned Stark, leaning against a tree in the quiet of the godswood and cleaning his sword as the autumn leaves fall around him. The other shows Sansa Stark, sitting in the softly falling snow and building an icy miniature castle for herself. Each print features a lovely black border and a brief quote from the text that evokes the scene from which each illustration is inspired.

The poster features Harry Dresden from Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files, in a scene fans of the novels will likely remember, as Harry Dresden is attacked by a toad demon named Kalshazzak and is left out on the street, in the nude, with his date. (After all, a date with Harry Dresden is an invitation to expect the unexpected!) The poster depicts the exciting climax of the battle, as Harry channels the power of a storm and blasts the demon with a bolt of lightning.

Each poster and art print measures 18x24 inches. The Dresden Files poster will be printed on heavy, glossy paper that is suitable for framing or simply for decorating a wall, for the nice price of $14.99, plus shipping. The A Song of Ice and Fire art prints are printed on high quality stock with a clear varnish to protect the print over time. Each is suitable for framing and limited to only 500 pieces, for a cost of $24.99, plus shipping. In order to keep the art prints and posters from being torn or bent, the Dabel Brothers are shipping each order flat, between two thick pieces of cardboard. Posters will be carefully rolled and shipped in packing tubes. And the Dabel Brothers are guaranteeing all orders placed by December 15th for delivery in time for Christmas, which means these prints can make great holiday gifts for the George R. R. Martin and Jim Butcher fans alike!

"We've had great success with these posters and art prints before, and the fans have been begging us to do another one," explained Les Dabel, Vice President of Dabel Brothers Publishing. "We're thrilled to be offering these, especially since they have turned out to be such top quality illustrations!"

Those interested in ordering these exclusive poster prints can visit http://www.dabelbrothers.com to place their orders by clicking on the "Dabel Brothers Store" tab.

Retailers interested in carrying these prints in their stores should contact Derek Ruiz (druiz@dabelbrothers.com) for order and pricing information.

Announcements / neurovore's lack of sex pronoun
« on: October 27, 2007, 10:18:59 PM »
More than one thread has been derailed because of people going in circles about neurovore's wishing to not be referred to by either english sexual pronoun. While I'm not a "DON'T DERAIL" nazi by ANY stretch of the imagination, neurovore shouldn't have to keep going on the defensive over this.

This is the internet, folks. If neurovore doesn't want to reveal what sex the poster is, neurovore has that right, IMHO.

Quote
If singular "they" was good enough for Chaucer and Shakespeare, it would be really excessively egotistical of me not to find it acceptable.
-neurovore, more than once.

This shouldn't be an issue. Please respect their wishes.

Author Craft / Max Barry: First Novel Workshop
« on: September 06, 2007, 03:32:23 PM »
Fantastic op I can't afford:
http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/community/showthread.php?threadid=30453

What you'll get in this clinic includes...

Six weeks of online learning that will forever change your notion of what can be learned in such a short time. A forum that’s open for your participation 24 hrs per day, seven days per week, for six full weeks. In a recent survey, several cult masters class students expressed the desire for longer, more intricate class offerings. You said ‘bring it.’ And so we’re bringing it. Like the ass-kicking Contortionist's Hotseat, with Craig Clevenger, and Monica Drake's Your Fiction or Your Life, just concluded, this intensive will trump our previous four-week offerings by half again, allowing greater depth and complexity, and just a tad more breathing room.

Six cleverly crafted assignments, hand-tailored by the author of Syrup, Jennifer Government, and Company.

A small, high-functioning group for peer review. A survey of all those students who have done three or more intensives with us reveals that a majority of you prefer the organizational and expectancy value that a defined critique group provides.

A tight cap on the overall class size. To offer the maximum value in the instructor’s attention and feedback, we’ll be capping this class at 24 and allowing no more, even if you beg. So please, sign up early.

Two trips into the SPOTLIGHT for you and your group. This is the space where Max will take the submissions of two, randomly selected peer groups for that week and place them under the magnifying lens, giving you two very in-depth reviews in the course of this intensive. You won’t know which two of the six weeks your own group will be going in, so you’ll have to stay sharp and on top of things. Each review performed by Max Barry in this special section will provide an object lesson for the whole class.

It doesn't stop there. Max will also deconstruct specimens of published work and discuss query letters in Max's Lab, inviting you to step into the lab for a specialized view of fun and powerful literature, examining what works and why.

Telephone consultations will provide the opportunity to call in and gain an added dimension of contact, for insight and advice, even while most of this intensive will be conducted in the purely textual environment of a private online forum, a natural work environment for writers that allows you to read, practice, and make submissions at any time of the day or night that suits your schedule.

Dates: September 14 - October 26

Full price for the Max Barry Intensive: The First Novel is only

$295 USD.

Early registrants receive a $25 discount through Friday, September 7th.

DF TV Series / POLL: End Game Opinion of the Series
« on: August 27, 2007, 02:49:09 PM »
Poll for people's feelings on the show itself.

A ground rule: respect other viewers' opinions, and respect Robert and his team for the work that they did. If you didn't like the show, don't tear into them. They actually WORKED, folks, while we're just armchair quarterbacking.

(don't read anything into the order of the poll questions. They got scrambled for some reason)

People can change thier vote at any time, but may only vote once.

Announcements / HARRY POTTER BOOK 7 Spoilers
« on: July 24, 2007, 12:31:24 PM »
There is one place in the entire board you can discuss the new Potter book's spoilers:

http://www.jim-butcher.com/bb/index.php?topic=3820.0

That's it. We're talking anything, from deaths to romance to what the Weasleys did with the bowl of tapioca. This is the first warning, as a blanket.

Hate to be harsh, folks, but....

Author Craft / Women, start your...er, I mean...question....
« on: July 07, 2007, 10:22:29 PM »
Ok, towards the begining of a novel I'm working on, my protagonist wakes up to find herself in a bodybag, in a transport truck. After getting out (nevermind how) of the back, I have these lines:

Quote
I looked down at myself, and I was wearing a rather smart black business suit, the white blouse marred by blood, cold but still fresh. The hole in the front didn’t help, either.
   Wait, hole?
I probed the hole, then fumbled with the buttons…got two undone in the sticky , slippery mess, a third popping in my haste. Below, right above the joiner in my bra, was another hole. I’d been shot.  It must have been small caliber, stopped by my breastbone, but there was no pain when I breathed, let alone when I prodded the wound. Why was there no pain?
Nevermind…first thing was to get out of here and let them know I was still among the living.

Now, I'm probably going to change that up to "Below, right where the cleavage would be if I actually had any, was another hole." It's more descriptive. But meanwhile, my girlfriend's comment was "Joiner? What's that? I don't know any women who would use that term."

So the question is...women...would you? That is the joiner.

*Please don't post complete song lyrics (unless it's a song lyrics thread). Quoting a singer is fine, but seeing the chorus 12 times (or the same line over and over) is unecessarily spammy.

*Please remember to be nice to each other and respect each other's opinions.

*more to come as they pop up.

Announcements / Tensions & Warnings
« on: April 20, 2007, 01:00:31 AM »
Due to someone honestly meaning well*, 2 hrs worth of work was just erased from the board.

90 mins of which was me slugging through 5 pages of a thread of people having bad days, people getting insulted by complete misunderstandings of what other people said, and people flinging well-written insults at each other over a subject most people...including the insult flingers...thought was a waste of time. They just couldn't let it go. 30 mins was a case by case basis of where people misunderstood one another.

This stops. Now. I'm the one considered the good cop around here**, and my patience is at an end. The subject of Harry's education on the TV show is officially closed. Grudges will not be carried over (or at least reflected in) other posts. We're chalking this up to a bad day, and leaving it at that.

Official warnings will be given out next time there is behavior unbecoming a member of this board. Repeat offense will lead to forced vacations.*** This will have no bearing whatsoever on the moderator's opinion on what is being discussed. In fact, several of the people who almost got official warnings today are people who I agreed with, in regards to the original subject matter. This is also not restricted to those people who were flinging insults...this applies to everyone.

*To said person: Don't sweat it. I know you meant well. I'm not mad at you.

**Priscellie hasn't been catagorized, yet. Maybe the fully-rendered cop.

DF TV Series / Spoiler Tags!
« on: April 06, 2007, 02:55:11 PM »
We now have a spoiler tag; use it whenever you're posting something with a small amount of spoiler content on a non-spoiler board, or if you're posting an "off-topic spoiler" for a particular spoiler board (for example, if you talk book spoilers on the TV show spoiler board, the book stuff should be inside a spoiler tag).

Spoiler tags when used properly will look like this:

(click to show/hide)

It may also be a good idea to state what the spoiler is from, so the audience knows whether they can proceed or not.

To activate the code, use the radiation symbol in the posting toolbar, or use the tags SPOILER & /SPOILER inside square brackets [].

Please make sure to "preview" your posts and make sure that the spoiler tag is working correctly.
It breaks down to this:
ON-TOPIC SPOILERS ON A SPOILER BOARD: Do not need the tag.

OFF-TOPIC SPOILERS ON A SPOILER BOARD (e.g., book spoilers in a TV spoiler forum): Need the tag.
