Announcements / NEW RULE FOR <SPOILERS> on CHANGES
« on: March 22, 2010, 12:44:51 AM »
OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE IS APRIL 6TH.
We understand that some stores have released it early, especially outside the US.
There's a potential for major spoilers leaking before the official release. Apologies for those who have gotten the book and want to discuss it, but there was some bad mojo brewing on the boards despite those posters saying NOT to read their thread if you haven't read the book, using spoiler code, and posting in the correct board.
As such, we now have a rule that spoilers from people who have read the book cannot be posted until April 6th. Sorry about that, but this is one book people shouldn't get accidentally spoilered on! For those readers outside the US, this is not meant to slight you in any fashion. Please understand this is solely based on publication schedules and not political or cultural borders.

Note that no one who posted a spoiler before this post went up is in trouble in any way, and should be treated with respect. They completely adhered to the spoiler rules of the board. This is a new rule to avoid issue between now and April 6th.

Author Craft / Networking: MyOuterSpace.com
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:02:09 PM »
William Shatner just launched a pretty slick (if a tad corny) networking site for creative types. It's getting HAMMERED right now with hits, so it's a bit flaky on access, but I expect that to level out. I'm on as Mickey Finn.

Quote
MyOuterSpace.com is a Sci Fi Social Network for those with a passion for the arts. Whether you are a fan of Sci Fi, Horror or Fantasy or seeking a career in the Science fiction industry MyOuterSpace.com has much to offer. Register on the planet that host your talent, fill out a profile and connect with others in your field. Submit your resume for a Starship project that needs your talents. Whether you are an actor, writer, animator or gamer MyOuterSpace.com has a home for you. Creative Talent, be sure to register on the planet that hosts your specialty, and you may be selected by a Captain to join his/her Starship Crew. Visitors won't be able to participate on a Starship Project unless they become a citizen of a United Planet. I will be monitoring all Starship projects, and reviewing each Captain's Log, where progress will be recorded each step of the way. The Captains will seek out new talent on the various Planets to build a winning team. There are six Starships ready to crew-up and develop a dynamic entertainment production, so register now, participate and keep your eyes to the stars, William Shatner

(Planets are style of creativity*, I take it starships are actual projects. It's project management with a scifi filter)

*For instance, "Creatia hosts a creative environment for thinkers of all kinds. People like writers, directors, and playwrights call this planet home. Become a citizen of Creatia today, immediately start networking with other Sci-Fi thinkers like you, and thrive in a community" (Creatia sounds like a silly B-movie made up word for a planet, but it's a real Greek root...I love English)

Author Craft / *********************READ THIS!

We've had a sudden rash of people posting their original artistic works in this forum. Due to legalities (this is Jim's official board), this is not allowed. If you guys want to start another board (we used to do that) and have folks post stuff there, that's fine! It just can't be here.

Quote
We understand that the type of folks that would come to an author's board are going to be of a creative nature.
However, for everyone's safety, there's a rule about no story ideas.
The reason is simple: If Jim happens to see something he was planning to do on these boards, he can no longer do it, because he can't prove he didn't get the idea from the poster.*
This also extends to story ideas outside of what Jim normally writes, as not only could certain elements be lifted from on genre to another, but after Alera, Jim will be turning to a new series, and we don't know the genre as yet.

Besides, it's dangerous for you, the author, to post your ideas in a public forum where others to could steal them. Remember, more people come in here than posters....

*This does not extend to logical outcomes of situations already published, or no one could discuss the books

Author Craft / Tools for Writers
« on: December 21, 2009, 03:15:29 PM »
This is a place to post nifty software for writers.

This is my favorite so far:
http://www.ravensheadservices.com/

Great for organizing, very configurable, works on Mac & PC, website has great demos and the download is fully functional to try out yourself (except you can't actually save work).

Mac users apparently have something else that's extremely kickass but will never be made for PC.

Announcements / Reminder of Courtesy to Others
« on: September 07, 2009, 11:33:25 PM »
We're in difficult times, folks. Indicators say the global recession is over (although recovery is still a long way away), but employers are still scrambling to make profits, and it rolls downhill to most of us...pay cuts, etc. It's a very hot summer. Politics are weird around the globe.

This is a time to remember that these boards are mandated by the man they formed around to be polite boards. Behavior that's perfectly fine (or encouraged) elsewhere is not welcome here. Remember to treat your fellow posters with respect and dignity, even if you're in extreme disagreement with their views.

This extends to groups. Making fun of a group of people...whether it be a country, a group of hobbyists, everyone who has a specific disability...is not allowed. Everyone here should be better than that, even under pressure.

Does this mean you can't talk about such things? Of course not...but treat them with respect, or if need be, incredulous curiosity...but not derision or mean-hearted snarkiness. And if someone treats you in such a way, don't rise to the bait.

Remember why you're all on the board in the first place. You're all fans of the work of the same man, and as many of you have discovered, the works of several favorites of you all overlap. You have a lot in common.

Belittling others shouldn't be one of them.

Additional: There are now Fanfic sections on the board. All fanfic (which obviously would include story ideas) must stay in these sections.

#1 in the graphic books list, beating out Gunslinger, Batman, and Anita Blake:
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/graphic-books-best-seller-list-june-6/

It topped out books by Peter David, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, and Joe Straczynski.

DAMN, people! ;)

Announcements / NO SPOILERS
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:44:39 PM »
Do not openly post spoilers, folks.

Either mark the title with Spoilers, or use the spoiler tags.

I just had a movie I was looking forward to for a year ruined for me by the first 2 posts in the thread on it. On this board. I figured that with Turn Coat released this week, it might be a good time to remind folks of this.

Hugo noms are out. For those who don't know what those are, think the genre publishing equivilent of putting "Oscar nominaed" on a resume. That's not hyperbole...for this business, it's that big of a deal.

 Check out the first nom.

Announcements / Policy: Credit and Don't Steal Bandwidth
« on: January 21, 2009, 10:27:35 PM »
We've had a complaint from an artist who not only had his work posted in a thread without credit, it was linked from his website without permission. So every time someone loaded that thread, the graphic loaded, and his bandwidth got hit.

Please folks, don't do this. Credit folks, and don't steal their bandwidth. If you can't use a sharing service, then just post a URL. That will take them TO the site, if they want to see it...that's not stealing bandwith, that's upping the legit hits his site gets.

Also note that some artists will post that their art can not be reproduced, PERIOD, without their permission. Respect that, please. (Again, a link to their site is ok.)

Site Suggestions & Support / Mickey No Code. Fire bad, Tree Pretty.

Reminder: Site specific stuff usually needs to go to Fred. Pris has mutant abilities to do a restart, but anything non-social on the boards is not usually my domain. PMing me about it just delays your answer, especially if I'm afk from the boards for a bit.
