I have been trying to stat sympathies for DFRP but hit the brick wall that the power of sympathies is entirly based on how they are used so is mostly narrative and so can't really be statted by a magic system which is so systemic.

I had the same idea and decided it would be to difficult also. So I thought to treat the normal DFRPG magic as "sympathy"(I know its not the same thing but it could work) and Naming would be the other form of magic. And that's why I am trying to make Naming into sponsored magic or a stunt of some kind :-\

I could just use it as a different type of basic evocation, but I thought to have two types of spellcastingin this campaign I would do. The first would be the normal DFRPG spellcasting with symbols and focus items and such. I was thinking that True Naming would be rare, only a handfull of people would have it and it would be like sponsored magic. I am still thinking about an agenda. Those people who had it could do some thaumaturgy at evocation speed( just like with sponsored magic) and would get a bonus to evocation for the elements whose true name they know. Probably a control bonus.

If you give the named concept an agenda, standard sponsored magic would work without any changes.  (Fire's 'agenda' seems easy, other concepts may be less obvious.)  If you're looking for something more impersonal you might try treating it as a stunt / power.  Something granting a +1 to Air spells for knowing the True Name of the Wind or similar bonus.  You could also simply treat it as an aspect.  The "Wizard on a First Name Basis with the North Wind" would gain a +2 anytime he could invoke it.

That is a good idea, I could treat it as a stunt instead of creating a new sponsored magic. Treating it as an aspect would also work, and it could be very usefull for the players.

DFRPG / True Names; sponsored magic!?
« on: June 01, 2011, 09:44:57 PM »
I'm thinking of running a pure fantasy world campaign with FATE. Using the rules from the DFRPG which are awesome. I recently read Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle and was inspired to try to create some kind of sponsored magic based on True Names. A wizard who knows the name of the wind, or fire or anything else can use ti to do magic and manipulate that thing. I thought the best way to create such a thing would be to do it as sponsored magic, but I'm stuck. I don't really know how to do it. I would apreciate some help :)
Any ideas?

Also purged all accounts created over 150 days ago that had never been activated.  We went from 4104 outstanding accounts to 707!  Hopefully, the server will appreciate the marginally lightened load. :D

Woohoo! Well done, you really slaughtered them ;D ;D

Site Suggestions & Support / Making the Birthday thread permanent...
« on: April 19, 2011, 07:37:30 AM »
I was wondering if it would be possible to make the Birthday thread from "The Story Of Us" a permanent thread? Like the mapping thread.
Here is the link to the thread:

http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,25337.0.html

The thread was a great idea and if its a permanent thread new members(and old ones who haven't yet said when their birthdays are) can share that with the rest of the forum, and that way we can give them our Happy Birthday wishes :D

this sounds realy neat, as I do buy stuff from amazon from time to tiem. it also sounds a bit on techy side. as a sugesting, would it be possibel to make a genric 'buy it from amazon thru us link'?

That would be very useful, since the process sounds complicated. And I'm not really that good with computers ::)

DFRPG / Re: Iron Kingdoms with FATE

How common are guns? Maybe guns should switch to archery (with guns at -2) and then there's a stunt that allows you to shoot guns without the negative. Guess it depends on which is more common.

EDIT: Oh, and the steamjacks are just going to be difficult as are any other summoned/crafted creature in the DFRPG. You could represent them with item of power, shapeshifting abilities, or Devonapple has a whole summoning/golem thread with other thoughts.

http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,23613.msg1010830.html#msg1010830

I think there's another thread running around somewhere too, but I couldn't find it.

Guns are very common in the setting, but mostly muskets and flintlock pistols. There are no "modern" guns. Thanks for the summoning/golem thread, that could be useful in my game. And good point on letting warcasters channel their magic through weapons and using the normal channeling rules-that would make things a lot simpler :)

When I said items of power for steam punk, forgive my lack of clarity. What I was thinking was things like steam powered battle armour that gives you a couple of Inhuman level physicals. Or like a set of gear-punk wings that lets you fly super fast. That type of thing.

Something like a gear-tech gun is just a gun. A steam punk horse is just a horse. Etc. Basically, if you could use it without special stunts and powers, you should be able to use a steam-punk version of it without special stunts and powers.

If you're talking about controlling some sort of mechanized war machines, maybe you could use the summoning rules. I"m not sure how comfortable a fit for you that would be.

For personal use special items, you could actually handle them like potions.

Warcaster armor would definitely be an item of power-it does give its user increased strenght and a power field that absorbs damage to a degree. And other steampunk items could very easily be handled as enchanted items. And thanks for the potion idea-that would fit well with the Gunmage character. Gunmages can craft special bullets empowered with their magic, so I could make that as potions: each session a Gunmage character has a few special bullets that he prepared that are one-shot items(potions).

Hmm, I was thinking of putting steampunk-mechanicka items as Gadets from SoTC. Items of power would be the more powerfull items.
My biggest problem is deciding how to deal with the special IK classes in FATE. Like the Warcaster: they can control warjacks and empower their own weapons and armors with magic. Warcasters also wear special armors but those are easily covered as items of power.
I should probably just come up with new stunts for those abilities, that would be the easiest way I think. :)

And thanks for the skill advice, I forgot about that! And Guns should stay Guns, because there are firearms in the Iron Kingdoms.
