Site Suggestions & Support / Re: The Spoilers Section - The Poll
« on: November 16, 2009, 11:13:31 PM »
My parents told me not to talk back to things that have power over me. :'(

The answers are exaggerations but they mean "Do you think the Spoilers Section is sufficiently polite or not."

Yep, I was having one of those days where I just assume a respective syntax is clear, excuse me.

Didn't mean to leave the thread alone so long. Blame Mickey. I've made the responses more clear and added a "meh" response. I believe I made the poll so that anyone would be able to change their response at any time.

Unless a lot of people misunderstood my sleep-distorted poll it would seem that people find Spoilers to be reasonably civil. :)

All of those votes were put in before you fixed your poll, the yes votes could just a easily been for "yes its just like Jarry". Since most people aren’t likely to go back to a poll they already voted in and see if it has changed or not, don’t you think it is only fair that you reset it so it is accurate?

Even with a "meh" option your question is still pretty loaded. One option, the one you have indicated you favor, being very moderate and inclusive of multiple views on the matter, and the other one as total extreme option. A good guide to if the poll is loaded is to flip the options and see if it still seems fair.

"Do you think the Spoilers section is generally rather uncivil or the Board's equivalent to Utopia?

See what I mean?

May I suggest that when you fix the poll you clear it as well, in case some people that voted were confused? Also the questions seems to be pretty loaded, you may wish to work on some more objective options. I am sure there are some people that may find the spoiler section to be uncivil but don't find it to be "equivalent to Jerry Springer".

thanks

edit *and I'm sure if you are having trouble with thinking up other options people on here would be willing to help you*

Reminds me of some conversations I have had before.

"Are you ready to go or do you need a few more minutes?"

"Yes"

"Yes you are ready to go or yes you need a few more minutes?"

"Yes"

It's probably worth noting that I'm now a lot more wary about posting in reply to someone who's replied to me, simply because I don't want to be accused of bullying or cutting off debate.  I don't like that feeling, it removes a lot of the fun of the forums for me, when I have to double check I haven't post TOO much in a given thread, lest I be considered to be drowning out others.

I think wariness on every posters part is a good thing. Yes it might be more fun to just post whatever pops into your head regardless of how bulling or insulting it is or how else other posters might perceive it, but that doesn’t make it right. I believe consideration of other posters should always be thought about before you hit the post button.

How do you know that Aine didn't send pms to people asking them to stop and pointing out what she saw as a problem and she didn't just get ignored? calling someone "harsh and unreasonable" comes across to me like you are trying to attack someone that is pointing out a problem and wants to have the mods input. Now you know that some people on the forum see it as a problem, you can either think about why they see it as a problem or continue to attack the whistle blower.

Site Suggestions & Support / New civil discussion section?

Would it be possible to set up a separate spoiler section for people that only want to discuss the books and different ideas in a civil and polite manner; rather than in the argumentative format that is the way things are done in the spoiler section now? Right now the only differences I see between the spoiler section and the old TT section are the topics being argued, the tone is the same.

I don’t see a problem with having 3 or 4 multiple posts, its when it becomes 10 to 12 that I think there might be a problem. It may or may not be intentional but it is a form of dominating a thread. It has the effect of making the conversation revolve around the super posters because those posters are critiquing every post that every poster makes. People may not be doing things like that to be bullies but it has the same effect.

At least that is what seems to be going on to me.
