Cinder Spires Books / Re: Sample Chapters?
« on: July 23, 2015, 11:31:41 PM »
That is only an excerpt from chapter 2, not all of it (its about 1/3rd of the chapter by a quick guesstimate).  Plus, I think people would appreciate being able to read the prologue & chapter 1.

Both were released on a easy to grab leaflet that was at the Penguin booth, so I wouldn't think Penguin would have issue putting those chapters up if asked.  I myself have the advanced reader's copy that was available to people following the @acerocbooks twitter account while at SDCC 2015 (which I did attend).

Tweets such as this one:

I hope to give a review of sorts this weekend, but I warn you I'm horrible at these kind of things.  I'd also like to post pictures of the cover & back of my advanced reader copy, but I need to check with the mods on that.  I mean, I can't see any issue, but maybe I'm missing something.

I kind of hope we get two narrators.  One to do the male roles & another to do the female ones.  This is a multi narrative book, and it switches between male & female roles enough that it would help to have a dedicated male & female reader.

While male & female narrators can alter their pitch to do a passable representation of the alternate gender, it is hard to pull off.  Especially for multiple male & female roles like the book has.

BTW; Yes, I've read the book.  You could get one at SDCC if you followed the @acerocbooks Twitter.  I will likely review this weekend, as I have just finished it, but this is where my knowledge comes from.

Looking through the book, there are 6 different voices in total.  Male & female voices are a roughly equal, if you include the cat.  If you just count humans, there are more female voices.  So we likely will be looking at a female narrator.  If that's the case, I really would like Tara Strong if at all possible.

The prologue & 1st chapter were freely given out at the SDCC booth, & think if asked, Penguin would give the okay to release these.  I've already sent Pricisilla a PM on the matter.

At SDCC I acquired a Advanced Reader copy & on the back are a list of places, events & capaign where said advanced book is to be distributed.

Okay, on the back of the advance reader's copy of the book, there's a bullet point list of places & events where you might be able to get your own advanced copy.  As such, I thought some here might be interested.  I'll bold the ones I think are the most relevant.

  • Author tour
  • consumer advertising
  • extensive online advertising, including Reedit & Facebook
  • major GoodReads advertising and promotions
  • targeted print advertising in science fiction/fantasy publications
  • extensive print feature and review coverage
  • author blog tour
  • major online interviews and reviews
  • promitions at conventions throughout the year, including author appearances
  • samplers for conventions
  • social media outreach includding promotions in the Project Paranormal Facebook page and Twitter

As I mentioned in another thread, you were able to pick up a copy at SDCC if you followed @acerocbooks so at least it might be in your interest to start following that Twitter account.  I expect there's a good chance the book might hit NYCC in a similar manner.  I'm not familiar with any other conventions Peguin attends.

Only up to chapter 21, but so far it's a fun ride.  69 chapter in total, barring significant last minute changes.

Just an aside, but you can pick it up at SDCC 2015.  If you are lucky enough to be here, follow @acerocbooks

If you are lucky enough to be at SDCC 2015, you should follow @acerocbooks

They've been randomly announcing giveaway passwords for a free copy of the advanced reader copy.

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim at SDCC 2014 July 24-27!

So.. July 25th signing 12:30p-1:30p - Sails Pavilion

Got a question, anyone know how this works?  I've known of the signings that take place up in Sails Pavilion, but I've never bothered to attend them.  I'm not one who's much for signatures, but I wouldn't mind meeting Jim.

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim's 2014 Schedule
« on: July 18, 2014, 01:53:46 AM »
I've finally gotten permission to announce that Jim will be returning to San Diego Comic Con! That's the only event that hadn't been announced yet. No additional events will be added to Jim's schedule.

If I'm not mistaken, he's taking part in two SDCC events, correct?  The Science Fiction Author cosplay on Thursday & the signing on Friday?

Then again, the Author cosplay might be something unrelated, but it sounds like that calendar that Jim promoted on Twitter a while back.

Also, I've never been to a Author signing at SDCC, do you have to pick up a ticket at the Sails Pavilion, or do you just wait in line near the booth?

Mysteries, Mistakes & Retcon thread?

I mean, there's a whole ton of unanswered things out there that need resolution.  So many that I'm not sure Butcher will remember to answer them all.  (Although for the first few cases its mostly about what Nemesis's goals were, and if it was an N-fected operative, or just an patsy agent of Nemesis.

There have been a few errors and/or retcons the series has made too.  Such as Bianca's assistant's name.  Mort living in a home he apparently vacated, in Ghost Story.  And the recent change where the Denarians hired the Church Mice & not Marcone.

Kinda feels like this thread & the one about people going crazy, because of magic are somewhat related.

I do wonder if the term Black Magic is just generally applied, but the effects are different.

I mean, I'd think the Black Magic backlash for messing with somebody else's head, might be different than outright killing them.  Same goes for messing with the time stream & making undead.

Sure, Harry got away with making a Sue dino zombie, on a technicality.  But so far, we haven't been told he received a mental backlash from this.  If he doesn't get such a backlash from an animal, what's to say that making a zombie does anything different.  (I know Cowl was pretty loopy, but it might not have come directly from the Zombie spells.)

So, it raises the question if all that's labeled Black Magic causes specific backlash, or if its just all generally considered illegal, but only certain types of spells have effects on the user.

Just throwing out another series that manages multiple Third perspective without ending up a confusing mess.  The Grimnoir Chronicles, by Larry Correia.

Personally, I hope Butcher changes his multiple 3rd person format, so it's more a marathon of perspectives, rather a jumble of time skips.  I'm not sure if I'll be interested in following another series like Codex.

This critter has to be in Skin Games ...

Well, Cerberus did show in Daedalus's labyrinth, in the God of War games.  Maybe Butcher will take a nod from he GOW games?  Kinda would be disappointed if he doesn't give some sort of nod to the games, even just as a joke.
