DFRPG / Re: Pure mortal to supernatrual character

Yes.  As soon as a Pure Mortal gains any supernatural abilities, they lose the two 'free' refresh.  So the player'd lose the free refresh, then would have to pay for the abilities in refresh, and considering the cost of Red Court Vampires, would likely become an NPC unless they saved up /all/ their Fate Refresh. :)

Can /I/ just say that it's incredibly great having you designer guys answering questions for us? :)  It's really good service, and I appreciate it.  I'm tempted to buy another set of books to give as a gift, in thanks.

Personally, I'd combine iago's options.

Have a 'Knight' for each Mother, and have each have different focuses.

Mab's Knight is focused on physical boosts mostly, he's a 'Knight'.  Old Mother Winter's would be the Winter Sage, and would be more focused on Winter magics and wouldn't get as much in boosts, but might default to Unseelie Sponsored Magic.  And Maeve's would be the Winter Squire, and... well, not sure what.  Maybe a spy, so some sort of glamour for veils?

Oh yes.

That makes total sense!

I was more thinking of something Harry said in Dead Beat, I think.  An older, more skilled wizard will take the same amount of power and do /more/ with it.  I figured a high Discipline roll would model that well.

Well, if I were to allow it, it'd be another action so you'd take another point of stress at minimum for casting another Evocation.

But I'm curious if RAW allows Overflow to apply to magic at all, it seems it should, but.

It seems to me that Overflow should have an impact on magic.  The base rule is you can use Overflow for another action, but it cannot be an extra attack or anything.

Would it work by RAW for the GM to say, when a magician tries to cast a spell and they get overflow, allow the player to apply that overflow to duration?  You can 'extend' a spell effect by re-casting it as per the Spellcasting section (Prolonging Effects), so basically you'd be doing a secondary roll to prolong the effect rather than re-attacking or such.

So, example: Carlos is casting his Water Shield and spends 5 Shifts.  He rolls Epic (+7).  The shield goes off, and with the Overflow of +2, it'll last for 2 more rounds.

Viable?  Not viable?

I think 1 point of stress per round works well for most effects, myself.

I like it, though I might make it slightly more complicated.

Something like: For every shift you get over their roll, it'll last one round (unless they remove it).  So if you roll a Superb (+5) and they roll a Good (+3), it'll last 2 rounds.  Less, if they spend a maneuver trying to remove the thing.

I'm curious about this also.  I'd say yes in my game but not sure if this is in the RAW.

Yeah, me too.  By one reading it works -- you pay the cost and can also get a free tag (An aspect tag isn't a cost of the spell itself really).  By another reading, that's the cost it pays and that's all.

I kind of like letting the person get debt.  The compels are fun and I'd say 1-2 stress is about equal to a fate point, I /think/.  But I wanna know what's RAW and what's not. :)

Question on this.  The book says the sponsor can 'pay the costs' for a spell, then goes on to list one thing: once per roll, the sponsor can give you a free tag on an aspect without paying a fate point, this gives you debt.  Are you saying that one could also have the sponsor instead of doing this, eat a point or two of stress for the spell for debt as well?

If so, this makes sense. I just don't see it in the book other than the vague 'pay the costs'.  :)  I wanna be sure I got this right, I'm going to be doing a game with wizards and one of my players wants to eventually be Mab's bitch.  Er.  Swear a pact with Mab. :)

Anyone notice the reference to (Changes Spoiler:

Definitely got it right, then.  Kudos!  I'm only up to page 156 in Your World, so got a ton more to read. :)

I Pre-Ordered this and have to say -- the banter in the margins is hil-ar-i-ous!  Did you have Jim help you out with that, Iago?  I swear, a lot of the comments 'feel' like Harry and Bob.

I'm kind of hoping someone here starts a PbP or PbChat game. :)

In the Dresden Files, Dracula is the son of Drakul.  This is pretty explicitly said in Blood Rites, I believe. :)
