An odd choice considering the Queens scale up - lady<queen<mothers. So knight<fae king<sage (?) The gatekeeper is unlikely as powerful as the mothers - considering they outrank just about everything apart from archangels.

DF Spoilers / Formorians and Outsiders

The etymology of the name is debated. The first part is now generally agreed to be the Old Irish fo, meaning under, below, lower, beneath, nether, etc. The meaning of the second part is unclear. One suggestion is that it comes from the Old Irish mur (sea), and that the name thus means something like "the undersea ones".[5] This was the interpretation offered by some medieval Irish writers.[6] Another suggestion is that it comes from mór (great/big) and means something like "the great under(world) ones", "the under(world) giants" or "the nether giants". A third suggestion, which has more support among scholars, is that it comes from a hypothetical Old Irish term for a demon or phantom, found in the name of The Morrígan and cognate with the archaic English word "mare" (which survives in "nightmare").[7][8] The name would thus mean something like "under(world) demons" or "nether demons". Building on this, Marie-Louise Sjoestedt interprets the name as meaning "inferior" or "latent demons", saying the Fomorians are "like the powers of chaos, ever latent and hostile to cosmic order".[4]

Interpret that how you will. They also have some interesting links to Noah, and to Perseus in Greek Mythology. Jim does his homework.

ALSO:The Fomor are supernatural demon-kin who dwell in the cold, dark waters. Folk tales say they are ancient evil gods – the personification of death and blight, but many have proven that they are not as all-powerful as told. The Fomor were described as having a missing body feature, such as an eye, leg, arm or all 3! Some have heads akin to reptilian goats and many have tails or other features to help them swim. Being creatures of magic and borne of daemons could be Outsider blood in them  - Ed note, no two fomor look identical and are instead categories by size and power.

DF Spoilers / Possible names of the Queens
« on: September 15, 2018, 05:58:54 AM »
If Callieach is one of the original forms of Mother Winter (which is pretty bloody obvious - literally she is known in Scotland as Beira, Queen of Winter), her counterpart is normally Brighide or Brigit.

Here is where it gets a little tricky. Brigit is the daughter of the Dagda (head god (Zeus-level) of the Tuatha De Dannan - the celtic gods) and married Bres (a Formorian). She is also normally associated with Minerva/Athena.

Somehow - back in ye olde times, I believe that when the Gods were putting all their punch in the fae, Athena was a big part of it. Along with Hecate, I think they created some sort of mega-deity that became the Queens. And they had a reason to split the Courts - it was necessary but I am not sure why. And somehow, I think Black Annis may have been Mab or maybe not. The whole scene in Ghost Story or Cold Days where she resembles a praying mantis and a cat struck me.

And yes, I sound nuts and have indeed lost control of this theory. Still though, anyone want to join in?

DF Spoilers / The Horned God, the Triple Goddess and the Pentagram
« on: September 15, 2018, 05:47:52 AM »
Hi gang,

In further research and meanderings I was reading a little bit about the relationship between the Horned God and the Triple Goddess in Wicca/Celtic mythology.

The pentagram is interesting. In Wicca, the two horns represent balance and are two points of the star, and the other points represent the Triple Goddess. This fits nicely with the nature of magic (the combination of the natural elements and magic) and the druid origins of the white council (the OG Merlin being originally a druid as well as a wizard).

Now Jim has mostly slotted the Horned God into the role of the Erlking/Herne/Cern, however I took interest in the part about the Warrior (youth), the Father and the Sage.

Now Herne and Kringle could be considered Fathers. Warriors/Youths correlate nicely with the Knight (though I am not sure this was intentional by Jim) but where is the Sage? This would be something akin to the Mothers, something unmentioned so far with no hints. I can only think of TWG or Archangels, but it seems a bit of a stretch.

Any thoughts?

DF Spoilers / Potential new identity of Mac
« on: September 15, 2018, 05:39:46 AM »
Hi All,

Mac means son of. So could Mac be the son of someone important?

Also;

Now I am not saying that this invalidates any other identities, but in doing some browsing I came across this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuan_mac_Cairill

Of note, the association with St Patrick and the living multiple lives and seeing the many invasions ties in nicely with his Watcher background. How this all ties in to the Outsiders, I don't know but I suspect there is at least some connection here. It would be very Jim.

ALSO: Tuan mac Cairill is an immortal shapeshifter. His origins trace back to the Antediluvian age, making him possibly the oldest being on the island. He is perhaps one of the legendary Nephilim. Tuan was once a follower of Partholón, though as the sole survivor of the plague that slew all the Partholóin, he is regarded with great suspicion. Mostly reclusive, he charges himself as watcher of the lands, having witnessed all the invaders arrive and perish in turn.

Pretty reasonable, he didn't vote for the lights being turned on.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Well of Demonreach and the White Council?
« on: April 12, 2018, 06:25:03 AM »
Keep in mind that 'THE Warden' is a paid position of the White Council.  Rashid tells Harry he'll expedite the paperwork, since Harry has the job he might as well get the salary.  That tells me that the Council and the Island are closely associated, though probably only at top levels.

As Rashid told Harry, it's usually best the majority of the Council not know too much about their work.  There might be a lot of older Council members who know that there is THE Warden, but not exactly what he does or why.  It's probably the Council equivalent of a state secret.

Sorry to be pedantic, but what was actually said was this.

Quote
At that, he paused. He looked back at me and gave me a quiet smile. “I know precisely how it feels to be where you are.” He gestured back toward the battleground. “Precisely.” He seemed to think about it for a moment, and then nodded. “I will do what I can. If we both survive the next several hours, I will settle matters between you and the Council, which knows only as much about our roles as it needs to—and that isn’t much. I will verify your return and that you are indeed yourself, and will see to it that your back pay as one of the Wardens is forwarded to you. There’s some paperwork to fill out to get the Council’s office to reestablish your official identity with the government, but I’ll see to it that it happens. I think I remember all the necessary forms.”I stared at him for a second and said, “You’ll . . . you’ll help me with White Council paperwork.”

The paid position is his regular warden role, not his role as THE WARDEN OF DEMONREACH. The council (only a few members perhaps at that) only knows that the office of THE WARDEN exists, but they do not control it. It is outside their purview and jurisdiction. It is implied in other material to have inspired the force that exists with in the council.

Personally, I think Anduriel has a very complex end game. But I do not believe he wants the Outsiders in. I think for certain he has convinced Nicodemus that he is saving the world, perhaps from Outsiders but also from Free Will. But I am not so sure that Nicodemus is aligned with Anduriel's end game. I believe he still is being manipulated. But judging from Nicodemus' action around finding out about the traitor denarians - I think he isn't part of the Circle. I think the Circle wish for unlimited power which they believe the return of the Outsiders and the Old Ones will bring. Which is probably wrong, as I think the Outsiders and Old Ones wish for Creation to return to the Nothing from which it was made. It is too loud and bright and noisy.

DF Spoilers / Re: Mr Sunshine has wiped out universes before. - WOJ

Also, what's with the sudden screenshotting of WoJ?  Can we not provide links to the original source?  Because I can fake a screenshot of WoJ that says whatever I want with no problem whatsoever.

Just to be clear, the quote is legit. It comes from a private fan facebook group that a link would not allow you to see posts. It also has Jim Butcher's personal FB account included in the group. He occasionally joins the conversation, but AFAIK he self-manages his own account. He is only a mildly famous niche author after all, and is actually quite down to earth. There are many people who are fans AND friends with the guy himself.

Also, I suppose I or someone else could photoshop a quote. But to what end? The point is to discuss interesting parts of the Dresdenverse and WOJ helps build that. I could have just kept it to myself. I don't need to legitimise it to myself, the quote is for all of YOU.

Finally, I would like to point out Jim's style of prose. It is quite distinct, and if you follow his various works and quotes you will notice he has little idiosyncrasies and idioms that appear in the way he writes, especially off the cuff. I won't get into all of them (do your own homework) but as an example, he loves chucking in "\" around words requiring emphasis. That is quite an old school thing to do, and you see it more with older types. Just a little FYI.

Not that your question annoys me, I am glad peregrine that you choose to critically evaluate information. We all know the internet could use more of that! :)

Yes it fits in well with his job description - and you are right about the utilitarian approach. Even though they believe EVERY SINGLE SOUL/EVERY SINGLE CHOICE IS IMPORTANT, some realities have to be pruned.

But I wonder how Dresden would fell about uncountable lives being extinguished. He doesn't see eye to eye with Heaven on a lot of things.
I find myself wondering what the other Archangels, and other angels do as well.

If Lucifer spends the majority of his time lying and compromising choice and Free Will - which all angels have to SOME degree - but not the same as mortals, what does Michael do?

Because it seems like Uriel does most of the counter moves. And Raphael, from a reader perspective is the most mysterious. The Healer doesn't seem to be very active at all. Gabriel used to be very in contact with humanity, what happened? What do all the other angels, apart from Cherubs and Angels of Deaths do? Guards, messengers, warriors are the norm. And Fallen must have a bit to do as well.

Have the other Archangels destroyed realities? This fits in with the line from Uriel "I was fighting wars before your planet existed" (to paraphrase). I love getting into the broad cosmology of things.

And tbh I never really agreed with The Mothers being at the same level as Archangels. I think that has been retconned. However, perhaps not because as Jim says - the beings do NOT change, only our understanding of who and what they are. And maybe the Archangels and the Mothers represent something beyond our myths, something Jim has created for the purposes of his narrative.

Mr Sunshine has wiped out universes before.

I know in regards to Jim saying (controversially) trust nothing he says, which is sound advice, he is also winding us up a bit. He loves playing games. And yes he spreads some misinformation, but we will work that out over time.

This however is "new" info, off the cuff. Psychologically speaking, it probably is true.

See attachment for evidence.

I am going to post more WOJ as I find it, but I think in general there is a lot to be found.

DF Spoilers / Dresden Files - could it be adapted to a video game?
« on: March 01, 2018, 07:18:19 AM »
So as a bit of a what if - could you do a sort of vaguely Witcher/Mass Effect/God of War type game. Heavy on story and action of course, throw in some Arkham style detective work and puzzle solving and keep the comedy coming and I think it could be a lot of fun. The hardest thing to decide would be how much dialogue would be yours to choose I guess. I suppose you could do it like Mass Effect and have a sort of "canon" story and the rest are "what if" scenarios.

Anyway I am keen to here your thoughts, what could it look like, what would it need, what to avoid etc. Have at it!

DF Spoilers / Re: Altered Carbon - Could Netflix do Dresden?
« on: February 11, 2018, 12:57:43 AM »
Netflix did a uf movie in the last month or two called Bright starring Will Smith.  Critics hated it, but the public seemed to like it.  I haven't had time to watch it yet.

Yeah it wasn't I suppose good cinema, but it was fun and they landed the cgi and fantasy/modern mash up. Biggest issue I think was the heavy-handed allegories and messages, and some of the pacing. Will Smith also just annoys me in general these days, but that's on me.

I was told (also you can tell) that some of their series took seasons before they found their audience, before any real interest or attention was given.
Netflix has ALL the money they saved during their DVD days, and then streaming, before they broke into making their own content.
If they chose DF as a series, they could make 2-3 or even 4 seasons and wait patiently on the viewers to come to them.
On the other hand Fox cancelled Firefly in a half a season, and Drive in 2 episodes.
DF home should be Netflix hands down.

But an example of them cancelling a popular high-budget sci-fi/mystery show was Sense8. Hard to know what the viewer numbers were like (as Netflix guards them strongly) but based on the size of the fanbase - it came down to the fact they wanted more money to dish around (unless you believe the conspiracy theories around Netflix's new corporate direction is to be more family friendly - I point to Altered Carbon to dispute that claim). Don't get me wrong, few other networks could do DF right - maybe Amazon or Starz, at a pinch HBO - but I think I would rather them streamline it a little while maintaining the core of the DF rather than losing the series half-way.

I finished altered carbon, which show does a decent parallel to dresden files and or has time travel.

Indeed, but they did close off the ending a bit abruptly (new lead actor, bold but dangerous) and the main murder mystery tends to get in the way of all the other interesting mysteries - I really didn't care much about who or why Laurens Bancroft was killed in the end, I mostly was more interested in the Envoys, AI and dark stuff in the background. And the vague alien references.

DF Spoilers / Re: Altered Carbon - Could Netflix do Dresden?
« on: February 09, 2018, 07:22:09 AM »
lot of Netflix series immediately start psychology and angst as main topics with not enough action to show depth of main character as the bad ass hero. and dresden files needs its constant action and witty banter to keep plot going as lot of times its like 24 series where harry is against the clock to beat the bad guys. so we dont have time to delve harry's 13 year old trauma for half a season before ending simple day worth of action.

I understand your concern...however Dresden Files actually does have a lot of psychology, and does spend a fair amount of time on his childhood past. I agree that they would have to be careful; rarely does the pacing and lines in books translate well into screen and stage. That is why so many changes happen to the source material and yet I think the best remakes tend to not stray far - but when they do they make appropriate and clever choices about what works and what does not. I think it would be worth having Jim as a consultant, maybe even a writer time to time (like George RR Martin).

Bigger budgets would be better. I'd still be happy with either. However, there are definitely some hurdles to getting it right.

Chronologically, it makes the most sense to do one season per book, since most of the books are a year-ish apart from one another. The problem with that is that it stretches some of the books out longer than would be viable for a series. Can you imagine Storm Front dissected into twelfths? A lot of stuff would need to be added for padding.

The alternative would be to condense multiple books into each season. The problem there is the giant gap between the events of each book mentioned previously.

A possible solution for the seasons that would otherwise be light on content would be to throw in the stuff from the Short Stories and Graphic Novels. For instance, make Storm Front into a season, but throw in things like flashbacks to a Restoration of Faith and Welcome to the Jungle.

The biggest transition from pages to screen would be the narration. You would to translate the vast amounts of non-event, non-interaction, non-dialogue content to the viewer. In the books, so much information is directly narrated to the reader about how spells work, the nature of the supernatural players, relationships of previously met characters, etc. How do you convey all that without just making info dumps on the viewer and throwing flashbacks at them willy nilly? Or do you convey it? Maybe it's better to leave more of it unsaid.

Much as I'd love to see the Dresden Files, a Netflix Original Series, or similar, I'm skeptical of them taking the time to do it right.

I think unfortunately due to the sheer amount of content and the way episodes work these days some people and events would have to be amalgamated. I hope not too much, but it would take someone much more experienced and clever to figure that out. I think 2 books a season is fine... but most shows barely have 3 seasons before people start losing interest (and risk losing budgets) I think you would have to trim the fat and end up almost with 3 a season (works out to about 6-7 seasons and a movie trilogy for the BAT?) Even GoT is only in up to it's 8th and final season - and while it has grown its budget it admittedly isn't the groundbreaking show it started out as.

The info dumps would be tricky - but some shows handle that better than others. I am skeptical too but I have hope that it could really work.

The major problem with CGI is organics.  Spaceships, buildings, cars, armor suits, weapons and full-time bodied costumes are great.  But anything requiring organic material, be it skin, faces, animals, or plants, and it looks fake.

AC and other sci-fi shows can get away with no organic CGI, but I don't know that Dresden could.  Especially on a limited budget.  There's so much in Dresden that would require quality CGI or quality costuming with CGI features that it might be cost-prohibitive.
I absolutely agree. It never ages well either - more prosthetics, less CGI is always better (just ask George Lucas!). Perhaps an interaction with WETA would be required.

The hardest thing of all, as was found in the original attempt, is actually the magic. Harry cuts loose all the time, but even in Star Wars, Harry Potter and the LOTR etc they even have limits on how often they throw magic around. Probably a clever workaround would be more physical fights, and maybe some Heroes-esque CGI. I am not the biggest fan of that, but they did manage to show a lot of powers each episode.

What Urban Fantasy movie?

Also I think DF ticks enough demographics, I think they would be fine.

I really do think however we as fans need to become more vocal - it won't happen without a push, and it certainly won't get the budget it needs without a big vocal message. Realistically, GoT was quite niche but amongst fanbases they were quite large. And we are not. So we really would have to make a lot of noise.
