Way to go, Fred! I've never seen this many people wandering around the site. Hopefully, they're all clicking on the ads to help support it. You'll have to let JB know his new book has a ton of interest.
-
Yes, fred, ....
We really appreciate your ability to keep it up this long tonight. I know last night.... there were some challenges.... but you know, it's better now and I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I say we're really happy to see it hasn't gone down again so far. ;)

I think your character has taken over your brain. That somehow sounded so...dirty.

A good chunk of that credit goes to Priscilla. She and I both have the power to restart the server, now, so there's a much improved chance of bringing the thing back up when it dies.
We've seen at least 4 or 5 crashes in the last 48 hours. Together, we've made those as invisible as we could.
-
You BOTH ROCK! It would be awful for new fans to come here to see what Jim's talking about and get the 404. *shudders*
Thanks to You, Fred, and all the Mods, for all you do to keep these boards going!
*Standing Ovation*
-
This is going to start that whole standing O thing that got the last thread by this name hijacked, isn't it?
Yes, Fred, you and Priscilla are the bees knees, the cat's pajama's, the straw in my single malt.
OK, that last one was a little weird. Blame two nights of little sleep reading Small Favor and posting in the book section.
-
That's why I spelled it out.... to avoid such confusion, since you felt it necessary to point out the filth inherent in my previous comment. Sheesh, try to be effusive and what does it get you? A reputation....

Let's see if I have this straight...
You think *I* gave you the reputation?

.... but i noticed nothing, you two must be/are amazing
-
no, Helen, you didn'y give it to me... but you do showcase it well...
Yes, King, they are. All the mods here are great!
-
Make that 5 or 6 crashes, Fred! :D
Methinks dedicating the book to the forum-going fans may have been ill-advised, as far as our little server is concerned. :D
-

I love you.

wow...... missed it too ;D

Well, let's ride out the storm and see if it eases up.
Looking at the google ads report widget in terms of numbers of ad "impressions" given out, it looks like we've probably experienced a 50-80% increase in traffic in the last three days.
Gooooooooo JIM FORCE
-
I only noticed three. Perhaps I have more of a life than I realized.
does that mean....wait....yes.... i have one too ;D
-
I love you.
You'd better... if you didn't... i would be a stalker... and a pathetic one at that...
Fred - the stats increase is amazing.... how does conversion look?
-
Thanks Fred, Priscellie and everyone else.. I actually thought it was something going on with my browser or my IP not the site..
-

Not much difference in the number of clicks, though I think that the increase in impressions has increased the overall value ascribed to those clicks -- it's looking like a couple more $ per day as a result. That said, I wouldn't turn down more. :)
-
cool. we'll see what we can do.... *waves magic fingers* ;)

I grabbed a few more Border's coupons and clicked on some weird crap just for the hell of it.
-
Thanks for keeping things up and running!
-
i have 2 questions
1 how exactly does a site crash ???
and 2
how do you fix a crash ???
i have always wondered about those
-
Crashes seem to happen when the website makes too many heavy demands on the software and database and CPU vs. the "quotas" placed on those and other limitations, so the software just gives up and says "I can't take no more!"
Recovery is basically getting access to the tools on the machine where that software runs and beating them with a virtual wrench until it coughs out some puffs of smoke and gets back to puttering along.
Speaking of which, Pris beat on the site twice more yesterday. She's really doing an astonishingly great job with this. Folks should shower her with praise and, hell, presents. :)

priscellie, you are amazing, i give you this virtual present equivalent of winning 10 games of monopoly in a row *gives present* now get people to challenge you, if there are grandmasters for it play them, so they can look like fools to your free wins

I gave her virtual candy yesterday-does that count? Of course, I was probably doing something I shouldn't have been at the time, but that doesn't really matter. The important thing is I gave her candy. Right?
In all seriousness, Priscellie really is a Goddess. I tell her this all the time.

I haven't even noticed the downtime. Granted, I've been here at 3am a lot lately, but even then there have been quite a few guests. You guys are totally on top of it, and good on you. :)

what are these guests?
-
Unregistered visitors, wandering through to check things out. I was up 'till after 6am today, and when I last checked the forums had between 20 and 30 visitors. That's a lot for that time of day, particularly since guests outnumbered members all night long.

Unveils Priscellie's Garden, a lush place of rich vegetation surrounding hottubs fed by natural hot mineral sping waterfalls, staffed by Chippendales dancers in natural fiber loincloths serving cool refreshing drinks and hand feeding hors d'oeurves.
For You, My Dear... - oh, and here's the little button to reset the site when it crashes, right here under this rock. Careful, the one to the right is for the volume on the surround sound. Enjoy!

*sips a pina colada in the hot tub of MSD's gift garden, while receiving a shoulder rub from one of the Chippendales guys*
Ta, guys. :D

*brings in a 80inch plasma screen TV, speakers, DVD player, and cables to hook everything, including the CD player, into it*
The Priests from Weird will be by to hook everything up for you.

pssst...Helen.... I have s'more Insta-Hunk if you need it..... pina colada's might give the guy a nice, sexy accent....

Yeah? I don't think Priscellie knows what that is. She might object to a hunky male suddenly showing up in her pants.
I see I've managed to hijack my own freaking thread. After I put "the unhijacked version" in the title and everything. I am completely unable to not hijack a thread.

*sigh*

Thanks Priscellie!
Your next back rub will be coming from Simon Pegg & Nathan Fillion.

*high-pitched squeal*
-
Just restarted the forums again! I'm earning that backrub!
-
Thank you, Priscellie. :-*
-
She so rocks. Maybe we should get Hawthorn to do a sculpture in her honor.
-
wow, I had no idea it crashed so much, thanks for keeping it going,
are there just pina colada, or is there a full wet bar?
*looks around for some Malibu rum *
-
It's next to the Captain Morgan.
*Morgan glares*
The other Captain Morgan.
-
Heh. *nods*
Helen - did Hawthorn not empty the dishwasher again? Why are you opting to punish her with making a scultpure?
-

Hawthorn has apparently forgotten we have a dishwasher. I think the best way we can show our love for Priscellie is to make Hawthorn do something she hates, with love.
-
gotcha.
-
I think the best way we can show our love for Priscellie is to make Hawthorn do something she hates, with love.
That is the single best piece of logic I have ever read,(shows how messed up it i in my head) By the way i believe the tread has bee hijacked again.
I call NOT IT !!
-
NOT IT!!!
*still snickering over the Captain Morgan comment.* I will never see Rum and Coke the same way ever again.
-

Of course it was hijacked. I freaking hijacked it myself, then lacked the will to get it back on track. This always happens to me. Eventually, Fred will notice it and move it to McAnally's.
And yeah, I'm rather proud of that bit of logic myself.
-
hmmmm... how long do you think we can pretend it is still ontrack before he moves it?
btw did it go down for a few minutes last night? (see still on topic)
-
It's gone down a lot in the last 24 hours. I got woken up at 7:15am today by the little monitoring-bell going off. :)
This might have something to do with it:

Think you can spot where Small Favor came out? :)
-
I don't have your resources, but it looked to me as if we started getting an increase in members and guests a few days before the book came out, and it looks as if your graph bears that out. This is a good thing for JB, and if people will click on the freaking ads, a good thing for you.
Thanks for everything, Fred. You rock.
-
The number of clicks are still relatively minor, but the increased traffic appears to have increased the clicks' intrinsic value somehow, so there's definitely SOME increase in fund influx. Enough to support another server upgrade if we need it? -- That's a time will tell thing.
-
Exactly what is the projected expense for a server upgrade? Perhaps a fundraising drive via paypal might help if some of us on here are interested in throwing a voluntary $20 - $25 your way?
-

I haven't priced it out yet. We've already made the jump to something in the $50-$75/month territory (just for the forum site); the next step up probably gets into several hundred a month, and I'd like to see the site revenues get a bit more consistently able to generate that before I make that move. Amazon carries the lion's share (and at the moment is also putting some money in my pocket, which given that I'm self-employed I'd like it to continue to do), but it's difficult to predict from month to month. Google ad-clicks by themselves are barely covering the current costs; they'd have to step up several times more, beyond the boost they're already getting from the increased traffic, to support a move to a hundreds-per-month type affair.
-
What's your bandwith at now?
-
I am sure that it's not Comcastic!
-
do we just have to click on the links for you to get credit? what do we have to do exactly?
-
Yeah, just click on the ads. I click on the Borders ads. You get 20% off coupons that way.
-
What's your bandwith at now?
Haven't even looked at that. It's less about bandwidth and more about processor.
For the record, I'm not interested in doing "fan servers", in the sense of a machine in somebody's basement. We did that for a while, and I moved over to commercial servers for good reasons. :)
EDIT: Note, I don't think bandwidth is the concern here. It's CPU time.
-
but how many time can I click and they count, or do I have to buy something from the site
-

It's clickfarming. The clicks are what tend to count, I think.
-

No, you don't have to buy anything.
-

Nah - I was curious cause I thought that's what company's predicate their rates on and I was going to look into the company I'm with to see if they could offer something better than you're going with now. We have gotten about 25000 page views a week on the dresdenverse and it's pretty stable (don't know what would happen if we spiked to 45000 like you did,) but I pay next to nothing for my space.
-
well if it is just clicks then i have anew game to play, how many tabs with advertisments can i open at once
-

Don't overdo it; I'm pretty sure Google has algorithms designed to render things like that invalid.

well that is what i am asking... ok i wont go crazy
-

hurray for not following my foot steps and going crazy.. dont know how people do it

Crazy or not, I WILL say that the click-fees from today are quite a big bigger.

Most excellent. I snagged a couple more Border's coupons. I got paid today.
Yay!

What about those of us running Firefox? I've never even seen ad ad here. It might not be a bad idea to add donation instructions to the FAQ page. PayPal is of the devil as far as I'm concerned, but they are a simple, one-click way to get some financial support. Having a PO Box so folks can send in checks or concealed cash is a good idea, too.

I use Firefox, and I see ads. :)
Donation stuff is a little tetchy; I'd rather have folks get something tangible. Buying things from Amazon by first clicking through the jim-butcher.com store is startlingly effective.
-
You know, iago, I never think of that, mainly because I almost never go to the base www.jim-butcher.com. Perhaps for the sake of site snobs like me, you can put a link to the store somewhere in the header or footer?

If you're expecting pop ups, they don't have them here. If you look at the top and bottom of each page, you'll see the ads we're talking about. They're not that obvious. Thank God.
-
I've looked, Helen, and there aren't any for me. The first few times someone sporfled about the ad being germane to a thread I went looking, and I've never found a single ad. Granted, I hate ads, but for some reason I have none.
I'm glad the store referrals are getting it done. I've been part of a site that grew too much to support itself, and it's not fun.
-
I'm sorry about the long outage this morning, guys. I simply had to get some sleep.
-

Don't worry about it, dude. In fact, if you can arrange one for the same time every morning, I'll be sure to make it to work on time. Thanks.
-
Heh - Don't encourage the slave, Helen. He can sleep when he's dead. ;)
-

Yes, but if he dies what happens to the site? I'm thinking of us here.
-
Priscellie'll handle it... she's still young... ;) ;D
*runs away before iago throws something at me.*
-
I've put a reminder to click the ads and a link to the store at the top and bottom of the page. Hopefully it's not too intrusive.
-
No, it looks good to me! Thanks!

Priscellie's parents are in town, and she will be super-scarce this weekend. Fred deserves super-love, as he has no gnome to tag-team site restarts.

No, it's good Fred. People need to know to click the ads.

Enjoy your parental units, Priscellie!
*gives Fred extra lurves*

Excuse me? You expect a life?

There's definitely been an increase in clicks (and thus cash) over the last few days -- significantly so. Thanks guys, and keep it up--more cash on the way in means that our options down the road continue to improve (and, frankly, makes it more worth my time to do such things).
Inspired by this, I've gotten a little more into the meat of how things are running on the server, and I've got some on-server monitoring of the database's "stats" so I can see if that's the culprit, as well as trying my hand at a little mysql server tuning. We'll see how that fares!
-
That's excellent, Fred, and I think it's fair to say that makes everyone happy. You've created a nice place here. We'd like to keep it. If there's anything you need aside from ad clicking, let us know.
-

Yay! Keep up the good work, Fred, and like Helen said, if there's anything else we can do to support you guys and the site, just let us know!
-
Whoa. I really expected the numbers to start dropping after the book had been out over a week, like it did with Captain's Fury, but that doesn't seem to be happening.
Fred?
-
I'll report in on the numbers again in a week or so. :)
-
I'll report in on the numbers again in a week or so. :)
Most excellent. Thanks. I'm curious. OK, I'm nosy.
-
Saturday was our lowest number of impressions this month. But it was a *weekend*, so that's not too shocking. I've worked out a webserver-restarting script that may take care of some of the issues we've been seeing with crashes, so here's hoping from here.
-
Yay! That's awesome! Thanks for doing that.
(I noticed postings down from this end too, for what it's worth. It was Saturday, Spring is springing, you know?
-
Maybe Helen took a nap? :D
And you ROCK for figuring out a way to automate restarts. All hail Fred, savior of sanity!
To the Black Council threatening to overthrow the site/mods/betas/Shecky: You need Fred. Otherwise, the site will die.
-
Ok, so I will let the Black Council know...
Fred lives... we'll keep him in the basement near the gerbil wheel to keep the site running.
Priscellie lives... we need a face on the puppet regime, and her's is pretty.
Mickey and Ashton - speak now or your lives are forfeit... what can you offer the Black Council that will make it worth our while to let you live?? hmmmm??? *eyebrow*
-
Mickey lives. Fred and I shall refuse to work without him, and without Fred the site shall die.
Ashton lives. Because in order to kill him, you would first have to find him.

Rats. Foiled again. 8)

You're so funny, Priscellie.
As a matter of fact I did take a nap. The child had her birthday party today. It was the only sane choice.
And yes, Fred rocks.
As for overthrowing the mods, I have no idea what you're talking about. Assuming I did, you and Fred are in no danger. MSD outlined our position, assuming we had one, perfectly.
Ashton? You mean the Fist of the Site? Uncle Heavy? The Dude with the Iron Fist? That Ashton?
-
Can we at least continue to manipulate events from the shadows if we promise to let you think you're still in control??
Please?
-
I forgot The Prince of Darkness.
-
Ashton? You mean the Fist of the Site? Uncle Heavy? The Dude with the Iron Fist? That Ashton?
Yup. The forum's own Uriel.
And Happy Birthday to Hawthorn!
-

Would an exorcist work? Sorry. Did I say that out loud?
Hawthorn says thank you! She had a great time.

Dammit, I just realized this means no more backrubs from Nathan Fillion and Simon Pegg!
-

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. You still do much that's appreciated around here. You do most of the routine thread maintenance, keep us in line, stop the anti-Christ from banning us when we get a little giddy in McAnally's, (and no, I don't mean Fred), update us on what JB's doing, the timeline, correct obvious errors in some of the threads, and just generally respond to irrelvenant and impertinant PM's. You deserve those backrubs.
-
Maybe Helen took a nap? :D
HEY! I just figured out what this meant. Now I'm getting Mod Abuse?
Yes, sometimes I'm slow. My excuse is I literally had gotten up from a nap when I read it. Not enough sleep over the past few weeks. And no, MSD, not because I'm posting.
-
Never Mod Abuse! Only Mod Love. And maybe Mod Jokes At Beloved Members' Expense. But mostly Love. <3

I had to go back and double check, I laughed both times. a little slow are we....hummm

It's OK, I love you too. At least you've never started a thread whose only function was to embarrass and abuse me.

Since this is the offical area of the site, I'm merely going to suggest you bite me, with a date and location to be determined later. OK?

Maybe because I live in Miami and spend a lot of time in Gardening. Umm...Gardening?
And no, as the injured party, I get to pick.

I'm seeing Jim this weekend. We will turn the power of both our eyebrows at you. Tell.

OK, this is yet another appeal to the Higher Powers:
Can't you rename Nostalgia "The Archive"? Bob's gonna suggest we just go all the way and call it Ivy, but I'd take it as a personal favor if you'd just ignore that.
-
YOu can't see me, I'm not here...
*lurks in the background from the 15th floor of the Atlantic City Hilton overlooking the Boardwalk*
And yes, those threads were mine. muwhahahahahahahah. Tell Jim we love him, Priscellie!

Think you can spot where Small Favor came out? :)
So it's a bit later; how's the site's traffic doing as represented by ad impressions?
Translation: It has eased off from the hectic boom of Small Favor's initial release, but traffic remains elevated overall, with the lowest numbers touching the top of the former highs.
-
That is highly informative.

YAY! That's really great, Fred. With JB hitting all the bestseller lists, more people will start reading the books, and since the paperbacks have your site in them, hopefully this will continue. Has encouraging people to click the ads and shop the site store helped?
-
Yep, the clicks help. They've fallen off a bit from the highs, but that mostly tracks alongside the traffic curve, above -- so we've got a somewhat sustained improvement, definitely helping to continue to justify the increased costs of the server we're on. :)

Good. I'm glad things are going well. If that changes, let us know. We'll nag.
