Title: This Site's Heavy Load-Part II, The Unhijacked Version
Post by: Helen™ on April 04, 2008, 03:54:47 AM
Way to go, Fred!  I've never seen this many people wandering around the site.  Hopefully, they're all clicking on the ads to help support it.  You'll have to let JB know his new book has a ton of interest.

Yes, fred, ....

We really appreciate your ability to keep it up this long tonight. I know last night.... there were some challenges.... but you know, it's better now and I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I say we're really happy to see it hasn't gone down again so far.  ;)

I think your character has taken over your brain.  That somehow sounded so...dirty.

A good chunk of that credit goes to Priscilla.  She and I both have the power to restart the server, now, so there's a much improved chance of bringing the thing back up when it dies.

We've seen at least 4 or 5 crashes in the last 48 hours.  Together, we've made those as invisible as we could.

You BOTH ROCK! It would be awful for new fans to come here to see what Jim's talking about and get the 404. *shudders*

Thanks to You, Fred, and all the Mods, for all you do to keep these boards going!

*Standing Ovation*

This is going to start that whole standing O thing that got the last thread by this name hijacked, isn't it?

Yes, Fred, you and Priscilla are the bees knees, the cat's pajama's, the straw in my single malt.

OK, that last one was a little weird.  Blame two nights of little sleep reading Small Favor and posting in the book section.

That's why I spelled it out.... to avoid such confusion, since you felt it necessary to point out the filth inherent in my previous comment. Sheesh, try to be effusive and what does it get you? A reputation....

Make that 5 or 6 crashes, Fred! :D

Methinks dedicating the book to the forum-going fans may have been ill-advised, as far as our little server is concerned. :D

Well, let's ride out the storm and see if it eases up.

Looking at the google ads report widget in terms of numbers of ad "impressions" given out, it looks like we've probably experienced a 50-80% increase in traffic in the last three days.

Gooooooooo JIM FORCE

Not much difference in the number of clicks, though I think that the increase in impressions has increased the overall value ascribed to those clicks -- it's looking like a couple more $ per day as a result.  That said, I wouldn't turn down more. :)

Crashes seem to happen when the website makes too many heavy demands on the software and database and CPU vs. the "quotas" placed on those and other limitations, so the software just gives up and says "I can't take no more!"

Recovery is basically getting access to the tools on the machine where that software runs and beating them with a virtual wrench until it coughs out some puffs of smoke and gets back to puttering along.

Speaking of which, Pris beat on the site twice more yesterday.  She's really doing an astonishingly great job with this.  Folks should shower her with praise and, hell, presents. :)

I gave her virtual candy yesterday-does that count?  Of course, I was probably doing something I shouldn't have been at the time, but that doesn't really matter.  The important thing is I gave her candy.  Right?

In all seriousness, Priscellie really is a Goddess.  I tell her this all the time.

Unregistered visitors, wandering through to check things out. I was up 'till after 6am today, and when I last checked the forums had between 20 and 30 visitors. That's a lot for that time of day, particularly since guests outnumbered members all night long.

Unveils Priscellie's Garden, a lush place of rich vegetation surrounding hottubs fed by natural hot mineral sping waterfalls, staffed by Chippendales dancers in natural fiber loincloths serving cool refreshing drinks and hand feeding hors d'oeurves.

For You, My Dear... - oh, and here's the little button to reset the site when it crashes, right here under this rock. Careful, the one to the right is for the volume on the surround sound. Enjoy!

Yeah?  I don't think Priscellie knows what that is.  She might object to a hunky male suddenly showing up in her pants.

I see I've managed to hijack my own freaking thread.  After I put "the unhijacked version" in the title and everything.  I am completely unable to not hijack a thread.

Of course it was hijacked.  I freaking hijacked it myself, then lacked the will to get it back on track.  This always happens to me.  Eventually, Fred will notice it and move it to McAnally's.

And yeah, I'm rather proud of that bit of logic myself.

The number of clicks are still relatively minor, but the increased traffic appears to have increased the clicks' intrinsic value somehow, so there's definitely SOME increase in fund influx.  Enough to support another server upgrade if we need it? -- That's a time will tell thing.

Exactly what is the projected expense for a server upgrade? Perhaps a fundraising drive via paypal might help if some of us on here are interested in throwing a voluntary $20 - $25 your way?

I haven't priced it out yet.  We've already made the jump to something in the $50-$75/month territory (just for the forum site); the next step up probably gets into several hundred a month, and I'd like to see the site revenues get a bit more consistently able to generate that before I make that move.  Amazon carries the lion's share (and at the moment is also putting some money in my pocket, which given that I'm self-employed I'd like it to continue to do), but it's difficult to predict from month to month.  Google ad-clicks by themselves are barely covering the current costs; they'd have to step up several times more, beyond the boost they're already getting from the increased traffic, to support a move to a hundreds-per-month type affair.

Haven't even looked at that. It's less about bandwidth and more about processor.

For the record, I'm not interested in doing "fan servers", in the sense of a machine in somebody's basement.  We did that for a while, and I moved over to commercial servers for good reasons. :)

EDIT: Note, I don't think bandwidth is the concern here.  It's CPU time.

Nah - I was curious cause I thought that's what company's predicate their rates on and I was going to look into the company I'm with to see if they could offer something better than you're going with now. We have gotten about 25000 page views a week on the dresdenverse and it's pretty stable (don't know what would happen if we spiked to 45000 like you did,) but I pay next to nothing for my space.

What about those of us running Firefox? I've never even seen ad ad here. It might not be a bad idea to add donation instructions to the FAQ page. PayPal is of the devil as far as I'm concerned, but they are a simple, one-click way to get some financial support. Having a PO Box so folks can send in checks or concealed cash is a good idea, too.

I use Firefox, and I see ads.  :)

Donation stuff is a little tetchy; I'd rather have folks get something tangible.  Buying things from Amazon by first clicking through the jim-butcher.com store is startlingly effective.

You know, iago, I never think of that, mainly because I almost never go to the base www.jim-butcher.com. Perhaps for the sake of site snobs like me, you can put a link to the store somewhere in the header or footer?

If you're expecting pop ups, they don't have them here.  If you look at the top and bottom of each page, you'll see the ads we're talking about.  They're not that obvious.  Thank God.

I've looked, Helen, and there aren't any for me. The first few times someone sporfled about the ad being germane to a thread I went looking, and I've never found a single ad. Granted, I hate ads, but for some reason I have none.

I'm glad the store referrals are getting it done. I've been part of a site that grew too much to support itself, and it's not fun.

There's definitely been an increase in clicks (and thus cash) over the last few days -- significantly so.  Thanks guys, and keep it up--more cash on the way in means that our options down the road continue to improve (and, frankly, makes it more worth my time to do such things).

Inspired by this, I've gotten a little more into the meat of how things are running on the server, and I've got some on-server monitoring of the database's "stats" so I can see if that's the culprit, as well as trying my hand at a little mysql server tuning.  We'll see how that fares!

This might have something to do with it:

Think you can spot where Small Favor came out? :)

So it's a bit later; how's the site's traffic doing as represented by ad impressions?

Translation: It has eased off from the hectic boom of Small Favor's initial release, but traffic remains elevated overall, with the lowest numbers touching the top of the former highs.

YAY!  That's really great, Fred.  With JB hitting all the bestseller lists, more people will start reading the books, and since the paperbacks have your site in them, hopefully this will continue.  Has encouraging people to click the ads and shop the site store helped?

Yep, the clicks help.  They've fallen off a bit from the highs, but that mostly tracks alongside the traffic curve, above -- so we've got a somewhat sustained improvement, definitely helping to continue to justify the increased costs of the server we're on.  :)

I don't but I believe my hosting provider does -- it's either a data backup or a log rotation at work.
