DF Spoilers / Re: Could Harry have awoken something in Changes?
« on: October 09, 2017, 04:34:52 AM »
The Fomor were definitely more active after Changes as a direct result of the Red Court's extinction. But whether they had actually been asleep before or just kept in check by the Red Court is probably just a technicality at this point.

Or more like opportunists, not really held in check by the Red Court, but with their demise swept in to fill the power vacuum..

Yeah, the way I understand it a wizard is born with a "raw talent/power" baseline, some are greater than others.. Harry was born powerful, just as some people are born with a high I.Q.   But that only carries a wizard so far, he/she also needs to study, train, and gain experience to reach their full potential, not unlike someone who is born very intelligent.  As Eb pointed out to Harry when he took on Molly to train, doing so would make him stronger simply because he suddenly will find he has to work at it... And so it has, in areas where he was weak before, veils for example before were barely passable, now they are effective..  His over all strength has improved because he has been forced to study to keep ahead and teach Molly.  This has worked in other non-talent ways as well, Harry can now understand and speak in Latin decently.
One thing that has held Harry back before he took on Molly was his own admitted laziness..  He did pretty well without breaking a sweat, so he simply didn't....

It's not just raw power, it's also skill.  Even if there is an upper limit on total energy one can channel, one can always learn better control of it to do more with it, as evidenced by Ivy at the aquarium

Imagine if Andre the Giant had the speed, skill and agility of Bruce Lee.

  That would be sportsmans-like... ::)

DF Spoilers / Re: Was Justin preparing Harry to learn necromancy?

The way I look at it, Butters can read sheet music, and given the proper tools that do most of the work for him, such as a computer synthesizer program, he can create a song. He doesn't have the talent to write his own music or play instruments, , but it's going to sound nice coming out the other end because he understands the theory.

Harry can read sheet music and understands the theory, but he doesn't need the program because he can play the instruments themselves. He also has a good enough ear and sense of the music to improvise and create his own melodies. Some of the technical things that Butters understands might be lost on him, but he makes up for it with that good ear and improvisational ability.

Yup, Butters merely plays the music as written, the music comes from Harry...

I think you are overselling your point.   Butters is very intelligent and very creative in using Bob's magic.  But that is a long way from saying Butters is a wizard in any way.
*  The hard part of being a wizard is actually casting the spell.  It requires skill, concentration, power and knowledge.   Butters clearly lacks the power, skill and concentration required, although with Bob's help he has the knowledge.
*  Most of the work involved in Butter's use of magic is Bob's, not Butters.
*  Most of the magic we saw used is an application of magic that Harry and Bob has already worked out years ago.  (skate board, potions, etc).  It is applied in creative ways, but the hard design work had already been done.

Do not get me wrong. Butters is amazing.  It is just not wizardry.

Totally agree, what Butters has done with Bob's help is more science based than magic.  Like the bombs that he used in Skin Game..  None of it makes him any less amazing..

That's a good point, and certainly a possibility. Could he also have been using his name as a focus to establish his will? Names establish connection, so could he have been using his own to establish a connection with himself? Or was it just an act of defiance?

An act of defiance, yes, but more than that.  Harry has repeatedly said how dangerous it is for someone to give out their full name.  Remember Chauncy wanted Harry's name before he'd give him any information.  Harry was very careful how much of his full name he gave out and how he pronounced what he did because it could be used to attack him.  But in this case he is roaring it all out for all to hear..  While yes, in his mind, but if the Outsiders could hear or be aware you can be sure that others would be as well.   Harry was making a statement, "here is my name, if you wanta do something with it, go ahead sucka, I dare you!"

I think part of it is when you someone someone by their true name, you have to have the will to dominate them in order to require them to be summoned. That's why Mother Winter was offended and needed to test Harry to see if he had the will to fight against her will. Similarly Vadderung had to demoonstrate to Harry in Changes he didn't have the Will necessary to challenge the Lords of the Outer Night as was. Yet he was able to with the full power of Winter Behind him.

That is why the scene where full Monty Harry mentally shouts out his full name as he confronts Shark Face in Cold Days is so significant.  It is a serious message not just to Shark Face but to Outsiders in general... page 417

And I would be damned if I was going to roll over for some punk Outsider and his psychic haymaker.
The words first.  Damned near everything begins with words.
"I am," I breathed, and suddenly the ice was clear of my mouth.
"I am Harry. . ." I panted, and the pain redoubled..
And I laughed.  As if some freak who never had loved enough to know loss could tell me about pain.
I AM HARRY BLACKSTONE COPPERFIELD DRESDEN!" I roared.

Then a little hell begins to break loose... But the point is, Harry is roaring out his full name as a challenge to the Outsiders to try and use it to mess with him...  It is a pointed warning that they do it at their own risk and really the first time Harry uses his name in this manner..

DF Spoilers / Re: Uriel's Second "Small Favor"
« on: September 29, 2017, 07:58:29 PM »
I think we are omitting one other possible action by Uriel to give aid to Harry for the twice hell-blessed power Luci gave to his minions.  As Kringle says, knowledge is a power like any other, and one of the most pure and dangerous forms of Power.   Uriel''s conversation with Harry, and the gifting of a book filled with wise morals and good philosophies, of good overcoming evil and the common man rising up to challenge the darkest of foes, could be the second favor.

I don't see Uriel doing anything that cannot net him some gains in the future.  Harry was having a crisis of Faith and Uriel uses the marker Luci played to save a good man from forsaking his Faith.  Harry was at the point of saying F-U to the TWG when Uriel arrived in humble form to help guide him to a better understanding of the situation.  Wrath, I would say, is Harry's strongest vice.  To help a man stop from succumbing to it and have him lose Faith, seems like the best use of a marker.

Well, think about it, would Harry have been successful with Alfred if he hadn't added a couple of drops of soul fire to his blood when he did the first summoning?  I'd say that is a gain for the future..

As much as I'm pro theory, I'd have to agree with that in this case lol.

It is all a matter of point of view isn't it? ::)

The way I understand it, Harry was gifted soul fire because he resisted Lasciel's shadow and gave up hell fire as a result.  That was the quiet undercover nudge, that is why Harry's hand tingled when Jake/Uriel said that.   It is further born out by the surprise since then by not just the likes of Shaggy but of Denarians as well that he even has it..

The more overt act may have been to make Harry the custodian of the Swords to begin with..  Which in of itself helped to balance out a lot of things, Harry coming to Demonreach to begin with to try and rescue Ivy and Marcone, the temp appointments of Susan and Murphy as Knights when he went to rescue little Maggie...

DF Spoilers / Re: Marcone's Age @ SF
« on: September 27, 2017, 08:42:44 PM »
Ok, let's review...
He had this appearance in a soulgaze between Harry and Demeter looking back  years prior to WK,  years prior to SF according to Priscilla's timeline.  (3 years BSF)In 3 years time come Storm Front, Marcone looks like this in his interaction with Harry...
So, Amanda Beckitt's apparent age in soulgaze at time of shooting is 10 to 11.  Her age in Death Masks when Harry follows Marcone to a nursing home is described as late teens, early twenties.  DM occurs ~6 years after her shooting, maybe a little more than that if Jim isn't so hard on keeping to a strict timeline.  I'd have Amanda's birth at around 13 or 14 BSF if Harry's perception of Amanda via soulgaze is correct.  So she would be (16-17) or late teens not early twenties come Harry seeing her in DM.

Yeah, that kind of wear and tear screams late thirties early forties, or a man in his late prime.  Depending on genes and lifestyle many men can look like that well into their early sixties as of Skin Game.

I think it is a hint at how powerful Harry will ultimately become..   Another hint was in Cold Days, the image Harry showed of himself in his head when he fought Sharkface on Demonreach..  He was not afraid to say who he was loudly and clearly, he was quite terrifying...

Quote from: White Night

He was an inch or two above average height, and had looked like an extremely fit forty-year-old ever since I had known him.

Quote from: Changes

He looked like a man in his mature prime, neat and precise from his haircut to his polished leather shoes.

One has to ask, what age is considered "prime?"   That has different meanings depending on the age and sex of the observer, it could mean anywhere from mid to late twenties to fifty...  I looked it up and physically prime is considered around the age of 30-35, but mentally/emotional prime it can be as old as fifty to sixty..   So it is possible that Marcone is in his mid to late thirties when Harry meets him in Storm Front, and is between fifty and sixty years of age as of Skin Game..  He is in good health, no doubt works out, so he may look like a man in his early forties...
