DFRPG / Magical monster - can this get pulled off?
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:42:29 PM »
This is sort of a monster I had an idea for independent of Dresden Files, and wondered how to pull it off. Because it relates to Magic, I'm wondering how it might work, let alone if the Council would get windo fit.

It's sort of like mortals making themselves into something like Red Court vampires, but not.

You have mortals who use blood for "Blood magic". This blood allows them to do things to themselves, typically using supernatural physical powers (strength, speed, etc). To do this, they invoke a Totem - not necessarily a Spirit, but they tap into the existing nature of certain blood drinking animals to get the ball rolling. Ticks, mosquitos, leeches, flies, that sort of thing. This slowly changes their appearances to mimic their totems.

So you might have a humanoid with wings and a probosis, or change its hand into a leech, able to take a beating. They can crank up their physical prowess by tapping into the power of the blood they store (like Red Courts and the blood in their stomach). So they very well would have a feeding dependency for their powers.

DFRPG / Were-forms that should not be?
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:29:50 AM »
So, I understand that when you do a were-form, you become the animal. Not a super charged or super animal, just the animal with a guy inside.

But does the animal form you take have to be an example of the real animal, or can you mess with it? Specifically I'm talking about size here.

For instance, the example of the wereraven has Diminutive Size. Could I choose to just forgo the diminutive size and have a raven the size of a dog? That's Not a raven that currently exists (except for say, maybe an eagle or condor), so is that legal?

Or, let's say I want to be a were-spider, but instead of diminutive size, I want to be a spider the size of a wolf. That defies existing animals. But from a 'strictly power purchasing' standpoint, it would be legal.

So are these kosher?

DFRPG / Hey wait a minute
« on: May 07, 2011, 10:50:18 AM »
In Full Moon, Lycanthropes are described as channeling a spirit of rage. The spirit sort of takes over.

In the RPG, Lycanthropes' powers are controlled by the moon.

What the heck?

DFRPG / Monster/NPC idea
« on: May 06, 2011, 02:53:27 AM »
So far we've seen the White Court (and other things) eat on certain emotions. Fear. Lust. Despair.

But there are other emotions worth playing with, which could have some rather interesting side effects.

For instance, anger and hate.

A WCV or something else that inspires, and feeds off of hatred, anger, or violence.

If you get one of these? You can easily drop them into an organization that is based on those sort of things. The White Power movement. Religious extremists. Biker gangs.

Here is a setup where the monster 1) gets to feed, 2) has a group of loyal followers, 3) its followers are drawn for those things, and 4) those followers are dangerous in and of themselves

(On an unrelated note, in Fool Moon we learn Lycanthropes are sort of like mortals linked to Rage spirits, so it'd be curious to see something that eats rage and something that's powered by it in the same room).

DFRPG / Real-time online DFRPG games?
« on: May 02, 2011, 06:21:05 AM »
I know that this board supports PbP games. But is there a place on the net where Dresden games are being played real-time? Using voice chat and some software for dice rolling and such?

Author Craft / Posting a story online means it won't get published?

I've seen this comment twice here.

Can't you just delete the story and then send it in? How would any publisher know?

Author Craft / Plausibility check: Lawyer of the Occult
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:31:31 AM »
I'm considering writing some urban fantasy, and what I want to write about is a main character who is not the badass. Not the guy with the kickass powers. He is the Useful Side Character, with a useful but not flashy skillset. Like a precognitive, or someone who is good at information gathering (like Morty the Ectomancer from The Dresden Files). Who... inadvertently gets dragged into the mess.

So I hit on an idea: a lawyer. Think someone who knows the Unseelie Acccords forwards and backwards, who knows the rules and politics that govern within the various Powers' organizations (the rules that faeries abide by among faeries or rules that members of the Red Court abides by within the Red Court).

The wall that I hit is: why would this person be needed?

Take the Accords as an example. If you're a signer (or a representative of the signer), then you don't need a lawyer; you speak for yourself, and you should understand how the Accords pertains to you and what you can do. If you're NOT a signer, then you don't really qualify. And if you're dealing within your own organization, why involve a third party?

Not to mention how much a third party knowing your system could be a threat.

Even if the character serves as a negotiator's role, or has the ability to Bind oaths/deals/agreements (think how the faerie have power over someone who owes them, now apply that to any who seek him out) in a form of agreed-to Geas, I still think that this character would not have a lot of Use in the supernatural world.

Does my idea have merit? Am I not seeing the forest for the trees? How do I make this idea work, or am I right in second guessing it? Help!

Author Craft / Better to play in someone else's yard or get your own?
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:18:02 AM »
While there is Fan Fiction out there, that's not what I want to talk about, but it relates.

Is it better to write in an established setting (The Dresdenverse, the Forgotten Realms, etc) - where the Rules and such are established - or is it better to create your own?

I'm contemplating writing some Urban Fantasy. But unless I, for instance, set it in the Dresdenverse, then all the rules need to be made up before I start working. Not just Magical, but the various Groups, and their politics. In essence I have to do a lot of worldbuilding before I get to the writing (because what I want to write about is tied very strongly to one of those world buidling elements).

Is there any time when playing in someone else's back yard (a pre-existing setting) is better than making your own? And, unless that setting is owned by a company (Forgotten Realms for instance), can you even get away with publishing it?

DFRPG / Gaming Online and Fate?
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:04:25 PM »
So, earlier I posted a thread seeking to set up an online game. After doing so, it occurred to me that there likely IS a place where Fate games (SotC/Starblazer) are being ran online. I just don't know where.

Is there any place out there to advertise for online Fate games? Or play them? And any particular programs/venues that work well for them? I imagine MapTools is a bit unneccessarily complex to use for Fate.

For that matter, is there a Fate mailing list or Yahoo group out there somewhere?

DFRPG / Now that the DFRPG has been announced...
« on: February 02, 2010, 02:51:43 AM »
OK. This is a little premature. OK a lot more premature.

The Dresden Files RPG comes out in at Origins.

I want to start to get things going underway for an online game soon. At least, get people talking, thinking about it, possibly lining up schedules.

But I don't want to run it. I want to play. So, getting things moving now would be useful. :)

What thought occurred to me is doing it on Google Wave. Given the nature of Fate based games, where you can negotiate extensively before you make a roll. The other avenue would likely be a Maptools/Voice Chat method. Making maps aren't necessary, but Maptools does have dice rollers everyone can plug into.

What do you think? Anyone out there intrigued?

DFRPG / Playtesters: Seeking DFRPG Demo at Cons
« on: April 27, 2009, 06:34:18 PM »
Hi! Are you a DFRPG playtester? Would you be interested in running a demo at a convention?

I would like to play in such a game. I personally am hoping someone would put a demo down at [ur=http://hypericon.info/]Hypericon[/url] (June 5-7, Nashville), but the point is still there about other cons, especially those in New England.

Anyone game?

DFRPG / Characters in books = in the RPG book - To which novel?
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:27:44 PM »
It has been said that the "Who's Who" chapter has all the characters and monsters from the books written out in game terms.

So I have to ask, when the game is published, will it be filled to the most up-to-date Novel/Short Stories/Comic?

For instance, will the Who's WHo have gruffs? And valkyrie? And whatever pops up in further comics/stories between Now and when it's finally Published?

DFRPG / Brainstorming: Adventures in the Dresdenverse
« on: February 16, 2008, 10:12:37 PM »
So, since the RPG itself is long in coming, I thought that maybe we could just brainstorm in general about possible adventures.

Granted, many of ye olde adventures have some connection to the location you set your game, or your players, but some may purely be 'plug and play' type adventures.

I find that good inspiration for this could be old episodes of The X-Files, or Kolchek the Nighthunter. However, both of these assume a level of "Mundane trying to prove it's supernatural", so in the Dresdenverse, that isn't necessary.

DFRPG / On Baltimore
« on: February 28, 2007, 06:30:36 AM »
It has all ready been announced that the Dresden RPG will be set in Baltimore.

So my question is, how detailed will the information on Baltimore be in the book?

Will we get information on Baltimore's supernatural community? Details on organizations (The local Courts, the Crime Bosses, the Warden preciding over that part of the country), the individual Who's Who, and sites of interest (like does Baltimore have its own MacAlly's?).

And on a different note, will we get tips on how to handle such organizations like the White Council, the Vampire Courts or the Fey Courts? For instance, discussion on what exactly is in the treaties the White Council puts down? More concrete discussion of what's IN the Nevernever?

DFRPG / Other forms of magic
« on: February 03, 2007, 05:29:36 AM »
Earlier posts have said that the RPG will have Evocation and Thamutology, and Faith Magic. Will there be anything else?

For example, the Shadowman had somehow learned a demon's name, ergo letting him use the demon as a weapon. Will the book have information on demon names and how to use them?

Harry managed to make a deal with his fairy godmother to gain power. Will the book discuss how to get power from outside sources (and what those powers are)?

How about Mind magic? Necromancery? Ectomancery (Summoning and speaking to ghosts)?
