Dina:
Hi people!
I was planning to stay away of the forum until I finished 12M and I only read 5 chapters so far, but I realized I need to do a post before continuing reading. I know there is a 12M thread but I cannot go near it until I finished the book and if I won't say a few things now I may forgot or change my mind. I won't do this for other chapters, but I've missed so much to talk to you about a new Dresden book...
So, introduction over, here I go.
I am liking the book so far. Specific comments, minor and major in no clear order.
1) Harry t-shirt for his first date is not the best. It says "whine later, suck it up now". I understand the meaning and why Harry likes it but when you go to a date with a vampire...really, Harry? suck it up now? I know the whampires do not use her fangs as traditional vampires, but they still suck your lifeforce. So, again, really Harry?
2) Harry may not be angry at the citizens that "do not look friendly" at him but I am. Harry did and keeps doing so much for them. They should be his people now, his support. Thinking on it, I think angry is little. I am truly mad.
3) I know Marcone must be doing a lot for the city, I am surprised that Harry has not mentioned it yet.
4) Where is Mister?
5) Harry says Lara is in a lot of pictures on internet and we know she was in the porn industry, so I am wondering how this is going to work for a slow-aging vampire. I mean, we know stars use surgery and make-up and things like that but people is going to begin noticing she is not aging. Not for now but I wonder if she has a plan for the future.
6) I am so glad Bob is with Harry.
7) This comment and the next ones are the ones I really wanted to post before keep reading. I liked Bear already but keep reading at your own risk (click to show/hide)I am wondering if there is a chance she is Murphy. I imagine her wishing to be big. She seems too cheery but perhaps time moves different in the afterlife and she had spent years becoming a more relaxed fighter
8) Fitz! Those who read my posts perhaps remember that I always liked him. And I am delighted to see he is the new apprentice! I think he is going to be good for Harry and I can see him becoming his son-in-law in the future or, much more probable, Molly's husband (when she stops being the WL, which I am convinced will happen sooner or later. Later being the BAT, of course).
Well, that is. I wanted to post that before Fitz is killed in the next chapter or he contacts Murphy and things become different. If you read this, thank you so much for your patience and see you later!
Yuillegan:
Dina! Great to see you posting again!
1) Harry, for all his advanced years, still has a fairly immature sense of humour. Which is both fun and consistent, if somewhat odd. Seems to fit the character well. But yes, probably not a great first date shirt. Then again, he really wasn't at his best mentally at that point either.
2) It is amazing how tolerant he is of them. I think it shows his maturity, to a point, but conversely it also shows a bit naivety on his part too. That becomes clear later, I think. It's good that he supports their right to protest and be mad at him. But not great that he allows an obvious problem to fester. Again, he isn't firing on all cylinders.
3) It is interesting the Marcone gets little mention. My guess is that Harry doesn't have the mental energy to acknowledge it. I think Jim also had so much to cover he didn't want to overburden things, but perhaps he deliberately isn't saying anything. Perhaps Marcone isn't doing as much for the city as he might once have done for whatever reason.
4) You'll see.
5) Honestly, she probably changes her look and working names every now and then.
6) It's good to see Harry get back some of the stuff from before Changes. Jim has clearly been listening to the readers.
7) You'll see.
8)Fitz is a great new addition for Harry, and the story. Hmm, I don't think Molly's story is necessarily going to be a happy one. Ms Duck's theory is looking more and more likely, even if details are not all that close.

No, he isn't, I just got the book yesterday and because we are expecting some real hunker down weather for the next several days hope to have a good old fashioned read and reread! My impression comes from the opening pages of the book. It's only been three weeks! Since the events of Battleground! Jim does an excellent job of describing Harry's state of mind, not just in his grief over the death of Murphy, if that weren't enough, but trying to cope with physical injuries, PTSD of the whole damn thing, and typical Dresden sense of guilt that somehow he is responsible for it all... Yet for all of that, though understandably Harry is in a emotional hole, he knows he doesn't have the luxury of curling up in a fetal position and staying there as much as he'd like to and is entitled to, for a bit anyway considering... But he immediately tries to dig himself out of it, so the tee-shirt is his way of giving the middle finger to the world because of what is being asked of him.
TrueMonk:
I think the tshirt is also a way for him to say that maybe he deserves to be sucked up.
Edit: I think the reason he is so understanding of the normal people who lost something in the attack and wants to give them more time is because that is what he personally needs.

Yes, and I know sadly from personal experience, the time Jim gave Harry is nothing, it's different for everyone, but no matter how you slice it, three weeks isn't enough, in some cases three years isn't enough. Even if one appears to be carrying on from the outside looking in, from the inside looking out it can be a very different thing.
