Character Templates for Review
« on: November 29, 2017, 01:17:39 AM »
So, came up with two concepts for a campaign concept I am working on, and want opinion/suggestions on the from the community. Thanks

Child of the Armageddon

A Child of the Armageddon is one who carries the taint of Darkness (be it demons, Outsiders, Hell, etc) within their blood. This taint is passed down through the generations from parent to child. This taint endows the Child with an extraordinary power, however, the ability to absorb the power(s) of any Supernatural Being touched.

Musts
High Concept Must include your tainted nature (ex: Child of the Armageddon Detective, or Demon Tainted Cop)

Powers:
(-Varies) Mimic Abilities (note, as a Child is not a shapeshifter, they suffer a hunger track similar to that of a Vampire (as noted below). )
(+1) Feeding Dependency (Powers):  At the end of a scene where a Child takes the powers and/or skills of another, or uses already acquired powers, they suffer an attack equal to the number of refresh taken, resisted by their discipline. Instead of a loss of powers, however, failure to deal with any stress overflow results in 1 free compel on the character per stress not absorbed.

Important Skills: None
Minimum Refresh Cost (-Varies)
From the Casefiles: Shannara Chronicles Season 2

Fiction
A fiction is exactly what is sounds like, a being formed from the imagination of a mortal. In reality, a fiction is actually a Spirit being, that has manifested a physical form based on inspiration drawn from a mortal mind. However, once the form is taken, the Being is, for all intents and purposes, the fictional character who the Spirit appears to be (ex: A Fiction of Captain James T. Kirk, IS Captain James T. Kirk physically and mentally). The Fiction does retain knowledge of who it truly is, but they will not admit this to anyone, though they do go out of their 3way to fit in (meaning Captain Kirk will blend in, not run around asking where his starship is, or shooting random people with his phaser.) While fictions can be beings out of fantasy (Halflings, dragons, etc) the spirits involved tend to prefer modern and science fiction beings to become.

Musts
High Concept Must include fictional nature (ex: Fiction Security Guard or Fiction Soldier)

Powers:
All powers are based on the character the fiction is, with the exceptions below. Most powers will manifest as Objects of Power (with only the first one getting the refund as per the rules)
Human Form (+1)
Swift Transition with No Mortal Home (-1)

Important Skills: None
Minimum Refresh Cost (-Varies)

I like the first one but I don't like how you rejiggered feeding dependency.  Stress is how you absorb the negative side effects of an attack.  If I mimic 6 shifts worth of powers, I'm likely to take a few points of stress.  You are potentially getting 2-3 compels per scene.  Instead, why not run it like normal where a consequence from hunger stress allows you to compel it?   That's kind of the point of Feeding Dependency.  It eats at you until you take consequences and then you are driven by those Hunger related aspects.

I don't really get The Fiction.  Could you write up a sample character?

I suppose that the Feeding Dependency on the Child of the Armageddon could affect their available Mimic points instead (thereby costing them a power or two as per feeding dependency and also affecting their ability to take other powers)

As for The Fiction...

Example
Name: James T Kirk
High Concept: Fictional Starfleet Captain
Trouble: Womanizing Swashbuckling Sci-Fi Character
Aspects:
Commanding Presence
I Dont Believe In The No Win Scenario
Loyal to Friends
Cowboy Diplomacy

Skills (Skipping)
Stunts and Powers
Item of Power: Phaser
    Deal Weapon 4 Stun Damage
    or
    Deal Weapon 4 Physical Damage
Item of Power: Communicator
    Supernatural Speed (Transporter Beaming)
Item of Power: Tricorder
    Supernatural Senses (Life Detector)
Human Form
Swift Transition with No Mortal Home

and I dont actually have an idea right now how much that would cost

I wouldn't use Supernatural Speed for transporter beaming. There's a Teleportation custom Power that might work better, depending on what you have in mind.

That aside, 1 Refresh ought to be enough to bump the phaser up to weapon 4. The rest seems pretty straightforward; what are you having trouble with?

You are never forced to lose powers, although you can if you want to avoid being taken out by Hunger.  You can absorb the attack with consequences too.  And consequences are aspects that can be compelled.  So compels are already built into Feeding Dependency.

It's not a great power, but I do like how it's set up like that.

So, based on suggestions, here's the revised Child of the Armageddon Template

Child of the Armageddon
A Child of the Armageddon is one who carries the taint of Darkness (be it demons, Outsiders, Hell, etc) within their blood. This taint is passed down through the generations from parent to child. This taint endows the Child with an extraordinary power, however, the ability to absorb the power(s) of any Supernatural Being touched.

Powers:

(+1) Feeding Dependency (Powers):  At the end of a scene where a Child takes the powers and/or skills of another, or uses already acquired powers, they suffer an attack equal to the number of refresh taken, resisted by their discipline.

Important Skills: None
Minimum Refresh Cost (-Varies)

And the updated Fiction

The Fiction does retain knowledge of who it truly is, but they will not admit this to anyone, though they do go out of their way to fit in (meaning Captain Kirk will blend in, not run around asking where his starship is, or shooting random people with his phaser, but will act as a regular person, who just happens to be James T. Kirk.) Fictions are almost exclusively Science-Fiction characters, though on occasion there has been a superhero or two.

Musts
High Concept Must include fictional nature (ex: Fiction Security Guard or Fiction Soldier)

Powers:
Human Form (+1)
Heroic Change (-1) : Works similar to Beast Change, except the Fiction changes from their normal every day appearance to their fictional appearance. (Ex. Captain Kirk shifts from looking like William Shatner in normal street clothes to Captain Kirk complete with Classic Uniform, Phaser, Tricorder, and Communicator). All powers fall under this form, and are utilized through any items that appear during the change, except for:
Swift Transition with No Mortal Home (-1)

Important Skills: None
Minimum Refresh Cost (-Varies)
