Extending Enchanted Item Effects
« on: February 20, 2012, 03:32:09 AM »
Sorry if there's a thread, but searching seems to have been wonky since the server crash.

Can you extend enchanted item effects using evocation?  So if I throw up a block with an enchanted item, can I use evocation to extend the effect on my next action?

I think the same rules as standard evocation apply.  Could just be me though.

I look at this from two directions. Firstly from a straight RAW/rules lawyer approach prolonging spells can only be done with evocation. While enchanted items are capable of an "evocation effect" they are not technically evocation. So no.

Secondly I look at this from a thematic/conceptual standpoint. It makes more sense to me to have the person spend a mental stress to use the item again (channeling extra energy into the item) than it does to prolong it (channeling extra energy into the spell itself).

Functionally, yes.  You can spend a point of mental stress for an extra use.  Thematically that could be termed as extending duration.

Funnily enough you can create an item which extends spells (extending a spell being an evocation spell) but according to the raw there is no option to extend enchanted item evocation .

As a contrast, I'd totally allow this - at least for items that generate effects with evocation-scale durations.  (On the other hand, if the item has a thaumaturgy scale duration, a few extra exchanges isn't going to matter anyway.)
