Miniatures for DFRPG
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:08:20 AM »
I like visuals, especially in big battles with lots of zones.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for miniatures that would work for the DFRPG, or somewhere to go for that sort of thing.

It seems hard to find miniatures that aren't superheroes, medieval fantasy, or obviously sci-fi.

I'm actually thinking of using legos now.  Maybe cardstock tokens for npcs.

A while ago I found this:

I really like this idea. You can just browse the internet for appropriate images (either a photo or drawings, anything that can resemble the character you want to portrait. They don't even have to be like the ones in the post, in different angles, just take the same picture 3 times. I tried this once by simply creating a table in a word sheet to fill with pictures. Once you have a sheet like that, you just have to fill in the different pictures and can have you characters in a matter of minutes. I however did not account for the little extra strip to glue it together, when I did my sheet.

You can even create some for objects, though they should probably be in different sizes.

What specifically are you looking for?  When it comes to minis for this kind of genre I don't think you're going to find a particular line or one manufacturer that'll fulfill all your needs.  You'll find one mini perfect for PC A over here, and one mini that maybe with the right paint job would work for PC B over here, and then find a Horrorclix over here for PC C, and so on.

As I have done that dance and have minis for all my PCs now, I could offer some suggestions once I knew what you were looking for.  The only constant suggestion I make to people for minis is to look at Reaper's Chronoscope line.  It's pretty hodge-podge but that's the beauty of it.  They have a pretty good almost-Dresden and their Chupacabra'd make a good RCV and so on.

This is an excellent idea.

I may mix it up between the trifold monsters and cardstock tokens depending on the height of the monster.

I will probably let every PC have a smallish token for themselves that they choose and bring to games with their dice.

My gf for instance will have a lego minifig of herself in human form, and probably a little cat to replace it when she beast changes.

I use Poser 8 to make paper minatures for my games.  I think DAZ 3D has software and models you can download for free as well.

From what I gathered from the other thread, that might have to be a Duplo cat ;)

Here is a place to start. Do searches for things like miniature, flat, counter, and tiles, and those searches again with the added words paper or modern. A lot of it is sci-fi/fantasy stuff, but at the least you wont be hurting for monsters, and there are also maps and tiles you could use.

Also, you could probably put together some stuff just by finding a good picture and shrinking it down to fit on a trifold or a stand-up.

Thanks for all the links, guys.  I am going to research them heavily for NPCs.  For PCs, my gf and I went out and got a few more Lego minifigs, and I am amazed at the likeness to all of the PC characters we were able to get!  She is doing a photoshoot of the results right now.
