I know.  But as my post above mentions, it isn't common in fantasy settings. 
Not sure it's all that uncommon.  It's come up in many of the modern fantasy novels (Dresden Files are an obvious example) and it's been featured in a lot of older fantasy novels.

Well, granted, it's not common in high fantasy (sword & sorcery) novels, but it's not uncommon in the non-high fantasy subgenre.
