I think they include NY because it is fairly northern. HOWEVER, try getting Mainers to admit NE includes more than VT and NH is like pulling hen's teeth! NY will nev-ah be considered New England.

I'm not saying NY is part of NE. However many people think of the Northeast states and NE as the same thing. They also think Canada is South, so you know...

Upstate NY bears far more resemblance to New England than to the mid-Atlantic or midwestern states. Just sayin'.
