Limits of Focus Items
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:52:51 AM »
I have a question about focus item slots.  Is the lore limit for:
A) all focus items,
b) one focus item or
c) one category of focus items (tracking thaumaturgy and evocation separately?

The text on YS 278 is vague and can be read as either A or B, and I have been using C as a compromise.

The way i read it is that your Lore is the limit for the total bonus a focus item can have. if your lore is a +4, lets say, so any of your focus items can have a total bonus (adding up the total for offensive/defensive control, offensive/defensive power for evocation, complexity or control for thaumaturgy and strength and frequency if crafting thaumaturty) greater then +4 for a single item. if you burn the points in refinement for more focus item slots to increase your bonus you could have any number of focus items and they could all have a total bonus of +4 until you raise your lore, then you can raise your bonus from your focus items. I dont think theres a limit to the number of focus items you can have, thats what i get from it

The two limits on focus items are:

You can't make a focus item that provides a total bonus higher than your lore

and

You can't stack bonuses (or the same type) from multiple focus items.

So, if I had Lore 4 I could make:

-----
+4 offensive fire control
-----

or

-----
+2 offensive fire control
+2 offensive fire power
-----

But not

-----
+3 offensive fire control
+2 offensive fire power
-----

Of course, I could simple make two different focus items, one that provided +4 offensive fire control, and another that provided +4 offensive fire power and have a +4 bonus to each.

What I couldn't do it make two +2 offensive fire control, + 2 offensive fire power foci and then stack them together.

-----------

If you don't like how that works out, then you can just house rule that the maximum bonus you can get in any one category is equal to your lore, and allow stacking foci bonuses, or single mega-foci without too many problems.

My Question really is:
Can you (with lore 4 and enough focus item slots) have the following:
A staff that provides a +4 Offensive Control for Fire
AND
A bracer that provides a +4 Defensive Power for Air
AND
An Enchanted Carving set that provides a +4 Frequency crafting bonus
