With this kind of forum, I've found that also accumulating IPs and just banning a range works as well.  Also, I've found domains before that work just as well as the IP, in the case of dynamic IPs.

One of the times I went through my forum and cleaned out bots/spammers it nearly doubled the performance.

(No, I'm not asking for this tedious headache/job. Just, whoever does it, I feel your pain.)

Yeah, the lousy code they use does lock up the post event.

I hate spiders that ignore robot.txt too.

If I remember correctly, this version of Simple Machines has a page where you can put check boxes on suspect accounts, about 50 per page....and just delete them...POOF!

On second thought...if you really trust a random martian with the ability to delete accounts and you needed an eye on it, I wouldn't mind doing it too horribly.
